The real problem is the worldview. If they are not willing to change while here, we in essence are importing Mexico.

Still, it may take a long while for things to get really bad, because my observations are that the kids of immigrants tend to assimilate pretty fast once exposed to the ambient culture, organization of labor, media, etc. It is common that many such kids grow up having English as their primary language, and a few don't even speak Spanish well at all. Once they have tasted American freedom and opportunity, they would be the first to object that CA or TX become like Mexico.

In this frame of thought, the real problems are:

1) enclaves that do not assimilate but export money, draw state support, and exert political pressure undermining immigration laws

2) politician/leader whores that initiate, exploit, organize, support, and perpetuate #1.

3) any tolerance to illegal immigration in any size, shape, or form

If you are a #2 scumbag, you actively keep #1 down, scared, isolated, and vulnerable, because if they assimilate, why the hell would they need you?!

Anymore, I look apon such circumstances as a chance to practice my Mandarin, abominable though it is.

That's what I should have done - spouted off in another language. Portuguese should be just different enough from Spanish to confuse the hell out of her.

BTW, if there were a huge influx of Spanish-speaking tourists to a particular area, then the assumption might be reasonable. Just as it would be if I were in the resort areas of, say, Cancun. But such is not the case.
