Why is it folks always think you need door or even windows to get into a house. If it's of anything less than brick or cement it's the job of about 5 seconds with the right stuff. And even brick is susceptible it just takes a bit longer.
You make good points. I think most of the flak you were taking was based on the wanting to injure someone comments. But hey, it's never too late to realize a mistake and adopt a new approach.Post #120 has about the best understanding on the topic, as well as secondary topic of signage. (Lord Forgive me for bringing up that one again)
Its about preventitive measure, layers of security, that tells the potential robber each step he continues there is more of a chance of getting caught.
I have built many of the newer homes, and if you live in a newer neighborhood with an HOA and a bunch of look alike homes made with vynal siding, and partial brick. all it takes to get in is a good fresh razor blade in a razor knife.
modern walls today: Vynal siding, on top of some either foam board or cardboard, then the insulation, and then some drywall. and they are in.
Security signs in the yard, motion controlled lights, motion controlled video recording, Sirens for glass break, notices of and visuals of cameras with infared night vision (auto switching by means of available light), then some "large" not ankle bitting foo foo dogs but big dogs is typically enough to deter most any potential thief/robber.
This is just logic and time tested as to why they are still around... and so popular these days. Heck most camera systems are able to be monitored even away from home on a smart phone at any time and offer text alerts. I have all the above except I live in an older limestone home, and have been here for 36 years with not one attempted break in of my home.
Another good idea is neighbor look out for neighbor. chances are not every home on the block will leave the home at the same time. Not so much for all the urban areas, but I live withing 4 min of the downtown Indianapolis so heavily suburban areas and my nirghbors are the best...
The nosy lady across the street sends texts to my GF when a usps truck pulls up so Sign no sign, camera no camera, despite all the negative feedback I will still do me and keep my family safe with every layer of security I can with the hopes of never having to pull a trigger on an intruder.
and all done with no bars or window film...
You make good points. I think most of the flak you were taking was based on the wanting to injure someone comments. But hey, it's never too late to realize a mistake and adopt a new approach.
I hope for the day when the satellite broadband is way cheaper than it is now. I'd like to get a Ring system that I can monitor while I'm away, but there is no cable TV, landline telephone or Cable internet company infrastructure... just satellite. I'm glad they at least laid down underground electric in my area. I had to clear a 3/4 mile stretch for a trench first before they would even come out here.
My dog has no assigned duties... she's good at destroying personal property though.I appreciate your input, thanks. I was miss-understood, My words were apparently taken out of context. but anyhow...
My in place items:
-(of course) the much disputed signage,
-Security/alarm service (ADT) for indoor motion and glass break activation.
-My own personal self built 16 camera self contained system. all 16 are displayed on two HD flat screen tv monitors (8 live cams per screen).
cams are 1024p hd waterproof IP67 wide angle IR night/day with auto switching POE (Power Over Eithernet) w/sound and PTZ (joystick movement) for live veiwing and zooming in)
All controlled by a windows based server I built running on an intel board that contains 64g of ram, dual 12 core Xenon processors and an entire bank of 20 solid state hard drives that are backed up daily automatically by the software. It's powered by a 12v battery bank of 6 solar system batteries. batteries are charged off the home AC power thru a solar charge controller with built in battery monitoring and condition reporting. Dvd burner attached for video export
This will keep recording and functioning for up to 6 days continous if power goes out. In the event of power loss, a sensor triggers and the software iniates full 24hr recording until power is restored or the batteries fall flat.
Motion lights are set all around for each camera, motion of the light sets a trigger off in the software for the cameras control and starts recording the three closest cameras on motion light activation of the one that triggered it.
Each motion trigger sends a sms text to my GF & I's phones. the alerts are set up to only send during the hours that we work. when we are home the alert chirps a siren on both levels of the house as well as the basement.. It's not a full blown loud always on siren, but a quick split second chirp.
(Similar to a new home system that chirps everytime the front door opens)
The system is entirely automated and self checking, also utilizes the ADT sensors indoors for camera trigger. I recieve a discount on my HO as well as the ADT system monitoring service. the only maintnance required is every 6 to 8 months I have to clean the processor fans of dust to keep them from overheating and melting.
Then we have the 2 giant great danes, which one (the female) actually watches the camera monitors, any movement and she goes off.
(yes thats kind of a PIA) but its just another alert, that I gladly welcome. the slightest noise she hears outside she runs to the moitor, is movement is seen she does her thing, then the louder deeper bark from the male kicks in ...
Final note: I have had my friendly neighbors come over or call and ask if I see anything on the cams near thier side of the property...
The police have recieved a dvd of a video clip twice.
My dog has no assigned duties... she's good at destroying personal property though.
That's not the police's decision. How about no response at all for theft or vandalism under $1000.
Very true but seems an open invitation to crime. Lawmakers and criminals seem in same league. That's not the police's decision.

We had a coffee pot discussion, one morning at work, about keeping doors locked. (about 1983)
One of the guys was calling everybody paranoid. Saying he loved in a nice, quiet neighborhood, not the ghetto and he never locked his doors.
3 days later, he doesn't show up for work.
The next morning, he comes in. Tells us, they day before, 7:15, his 2 daughters (12 & 14) are eating breakfast, Wife in kitchen, he is getting dressed in the bedroom.
Neighbor woman (4 doors down) comes running in front door, screaming. Her husband a few steps behind, butcher knife in hand. He catches her at the kitchen entry and stabs her repeatedly. Turns, walks out and goes home.
The 3 house she passed, had locked doors.

Hello staff member ;new member hereDoorbell camera video of two armed men attempting a home invasion. They were unable to breach the door and were later arrested after a high speed chase.

I’m not going to speculate as to why they chose that home, the homeowner and the police aren’t talking. The lesson here is that they were unable to gain entry. I don’t know if the homeowner was armed, in this case she didn’t need to be armed, the bad guys never got in.
I’ve probably read hundreds of posts in this forum about dogs, alarms and waking up out of REM sleep to engage in a gunfight. The way these two charged the door they probably would have been on top of the homeowner before she realized what was happening if the door gave way. Fortunately it didn’t.
These things happen very fast. The door and other physical security measures are the story here.
That does not reflect the law in Arizona. If you live in Arizona and someone break s your door down kicks your butt and rob s you and u shoot them
They pass, you will go to jail for murder ,know the laws!
I am always surprised when people enter their home, how many fail to turn around, and lock the door. I've encouraged friends and family to do so, and for the most part, they think I'm being extreme. You Tube is full of videos of home invaders that just walked right in. The lock is right there, use it!

Pulldeaux, you are absolutely WRONG! AZ has stand your ground and Castle Doctrine laws. When they actually step foot into your house after kicking the door down they are fair game.If you live in Arizona and someone break s your door down kicks your butt and rob s you and u shoot them
