I would bet money that if the same story was written but instead of rent-a-cop the shooter was a LEO that at least half the posters would be supporting the shooter.
Not me. I was in LE over a decade, and I am very pro-LE, but this guy would not have my vote of confidence even if he were an LEO.
I'm not at all saying guards or security officers are losers or anything like that, and there are LEO's on the street that shouldn't be out there. Not everyone is cut out to do it, and carrying a firearm means the person must have good, split-second decision making ability, and this can be enhanced by good, lengthy training which most security personel are not provided with.
Too many organizations have little or poor training and authorize someone to carry a gun not knowing how they will actually respond in a stressful situation. This was not really that stressful of an event. If someone had pulled a gun the guy may have passed out cold. I'm not saying the guy was stupid, but his actions do not seemed to be warranted in this event. Perhaps he had never received any training in such an event, or was unware of what can occur. Looks like common sense would say "Don't position yourself in front of a moving vehicle." If the common sense isn't there to tell a person that, it is probably lacking in other areas.

I think the library guard realized that he didn't have trauma plates on his back, so he decided to take his chances.

Maybe it's because you had a Barney Fife "guarding" your library
THAT's why there was only one shot. He had to take the cartridge from his shirt pocket, load the gun, and shoot. The sheriff only let him carry one cartridge.

The incident has prompted library Director Carl Stone to consider using the Anderson County Park Police instead of a private firm.
As far as James Turner sees it, he said the library is a lot more dangerous than people realize and that security guards he knows won’t work with the public, in a similar situation, without having a firearm.
"You cannot get a police officer to go up there without a gun,” James Turner said. “We get into the same situations as police do. So why put us out there where we can get our heads blown off?”

Will the obviously necessary SWAT team be paid for by the library or by the county? What's the grace period until a "no-knock" is served for overdue books? MP-5 or M-16 for library patrol?

I never knew the library was such a dangerous place. TV is much safer than books. That's it, no books for my future children, just hours and hours of TV:evil:

Answer
I frequent the public library and it must be unsafe since they have armed guards...:neener:

I just wonder if armed library guards are issued silencers or use .300 Whisper. Shhhh!
