Tired of 10/22

Did you at least change the buffer and the extractor. This will cure your problems and you will be happy again. If not I'll give you $100 as is

Yes, I changed the buffer a couple of years ago, before I gave up on the whole project.

Now, I noticed that the crosshairs are not level (a friend did it) and I am considering having the scope professionally remounted and leveled. But I think I will definitely put the drop in trigger guard on my wish list.

Good news

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not to revive a really dead old thread, but I finally swapped out the factory extractor with the Volquartsen one I purchased, well, probably a year or two ago. You know how you sometimes just forget a project and move on to something else? Well, I was found the part in the projects bin, and about 20 minutes later it was in. Gee, 2 or 3 years and 20 minutes.

A few days ago I finally got it out to the range. The first 100 rounds were absolutely flawless, of the same Federal bulk pack stuff which was stovepiping before. I compared the factory extractor and the Volquartsen, what a difference! Why doesn't Ruger just include that one in the first place?

Anyway, now I can start dreaming about barrels, stocks, trigger group, etc. I actually really enjoy my 39A, but at least this rifle appears to be functioning now.

One project down, many to go...

Congrats on finding a fix and reviving a "lost" rifle! :)

I have been experiencing the joys and frustrations of 10/22 ownership myself. ;) On balance, I have to say they are worth it in terms of their capabilities, and the veritable industry of modifications, add-ons, and accessories they have generated. They are kind of like "Transformer" robots for grown-ups... :D

.

Dang... I read the first 2 pages and had decided that the 10/22's suck... NOW, you tell me you like it again!?!?!?! ;)

I need to just go buy one and call it "my wife's" and then she cant be mad if I spend $$ on it... since its "for her"... :)

Glad to hear you got it running right

I have a Marlin 795. It is accurate and has never jammed. It was also $80 new after a sale and a rebate promotion around Christmas.

I am also suprised that your 10/22 jams. Sounds like something Ruger should take a look at.

All my 10/22s have the VQ extractor, as does my MKII.

I had a new 10/22 that I was blowing some bulk ammo through to break in the action. It was stovepiping on a semi regular basis. I stripped it down and removed the factory extractor. It proceeded to run flawlessly without an extractor until the ammo ran out.

When I got home from the range, the package from Midway was waiting with the VQ extractor, and it's run fine ever since.

I tired of mine as soon as I sighted-in my nephew's Marlin 60. It was FAR more accurate, though my 10/22 would feed just fine, even w/ 25-rd aftermarket mags and NEVER an issue with factory mags.

The Volquartsen extractor and BHO release are the best modifications that I have made to mine (amongst many others). My extractor did fine for the first 20,000 rounds or so, but then began to jam often. The VQ extractor was dropped in and has been working admirably ever since (with well over double the original round count).

:)

I had the same results after adding the Volquartsen parts. I added a VQ hammer and really like the trigger pull now.

My model 60 was a jam o matic. go figure.

I think I may have bought that one in a pawnshop for $60.00. After a good cleaning it runs great. :D

Glad you got it fixed. The Volquartsen extractor is great and I like you don't know why Ruger can't include this from the factory. It would probably save them a lot of money as they wouldn't get these things back in for warranty with this issue. Mine would not feed Federal bulk packs in stock form. Stovepiped ever couple of rounds. The Winchester Xpert stuff fed well though and maybe 1 stove pipe ever 50 to 100 rounds. It shot great so I just used that for a while. Finally I tried the Volquartsen and it fixed the issue and will shoot the Federal or anything else I've tried now.

It sounds like several of us invented the same wheel. I know that I was about ready to sell mine and swear off of Ruger's forever, when I decided to try a VQ extractor. I was amazed that something so inexpensive would make it run flawlessly.

You would think that Ruger would read these forums. :neener:

{Channeling old man Ruger}..."mere citizens should not be allowed high capacity magazines...or public internet access, where they might be permitted to form groups with other mere citizens that have similar interests...[grumble, grumble, grumble]" :fire:

Of three 10-22 I've owned, I never had a FTFire,FTFeed, of FTE problem. They just didn't give me the accuracy I wanted so I moved to CZ. I also have a T/C .22 Classic that is very accurate and reliable.

Took three whole pages before an inaccurate reference to the late Bill Ruger's reference to magazine capacity.

How many millions of 10/22's do you think Ruger has sold since 1964 that have run flawlessly for their owners? I don't mean to be the devil's advocate but you have to keep these things in perspective when reading of one bad experience with a singular example of a rifle that has been in continuous production for nearly 50yrs with millions in circulation. I mean, really, think about it.

Extractor, fresh recoil spring, and a decent mag along with a detailed cleaning will usually remedy a jammy 10/22. As for alternatives, I really love my Savage MKII. Its a bolt action, and it is highly accurate and reliable.

Is the concept of a joke really that far beyond your comprehension?

I love the 10/22 hate.

I bought a 10/22 Target three years ago. As soon as I got it I took it apart and polished all the rough factory edges. I've done a little trigger work on it. I only use factory mags. It never jams. Lately I've been getting into shooting 2"x4" angle iron out to 200 yards, which is pretty easy.Today I streatched it out to 300 and had some rings, but I think that's really streatching the caliber's capability - at least in my hands. Plus the wind was blowing.

Like it or not, sometimes you actually have to do a little work on a rifle and clean it occasionally to get the best performance out of it.
