Investigate & Verify

We have an aging society.

I grew up in a hi-risk industry, and have my experiences in regard to Professional Locks, Safes and Alarm Systems.

So...
When some folks I know informed me an Alarm Representative was going to be in their neighborhood, I showed up.

I showed by butt, was rude, and not very nice.
I later apologized.

I "made it clear" none my kind were going to be subjected to Fear or Scare tactics in selling.
There would NO pressure sales, no sensationalism , and no bull chips.

I am dead serious when I share I lit into him like white on rice and he jumped back and had a look of "oh crap, I just pissed this guy off!"

I was meaner than a junk yard dawg, and he was not going to enter property.
He could not give me copies of his ID, his license to do business fast enough.
He even had the Attorney General's phone, and BBB's phone and references with phone, fax and emails.

He left, knowing I was going to check this all out.

"Listen, I suppose you have some "free" offerings you are going to pass out, for demo's, test and evaluation for your company, and free advertising" - I said.
Before he could reply I added " I want them for some folks".

-One person has a 100 year old mom living with them.
She has her 25ACP pistol, she has had a really long time.
Yes, she knows how to shoot it.
Her daughter and son-in-law have different schedules, so she is often alone.

She cannot drive, instead has these services come pick her up, and take her places, like church functions, or to see her friends in nursing homes, or assisted living or hospice...to get with others to see a movie, or a play...even take a "old folks pottery class".
She will go share with others, just a old women that will assist folks with stuff she has been through.
Like for a great grandson and she was "Show-n-Tell" for a history subject.
Just surrounded by students , and she was telling how it was...

-One person does not have a hip right now, awaiting infection to heal, then try the hip surgery again.
The last fall , detached a retina.
It sucks to be 38 years old, get into a car wreck and be invalid for the most part.
No Recoil orders, and a Ruger MKI is what they keep handy with the Marlin 60 as well.
There is a real chance, this person will have to lose a foot, and there fore have to use a wheel chair, and we don't know about the hip or prothetic leg.

I ended up getting 3 Free set ups.
Free install, reduced rates, for 60 months, as by law around here one cannot write "forever", instead must put down a time limit.
I mean these rates are well below what others are paying.
If they move, the system moves with them.

The setting include others, aware of the plan of action.
Practiced plans, for 24/7/52.

Systems are wireless back up, and have key chain remotes, , meaning, if the 100 yr lady, is sitting in the shade of carport, snapping beans, and just outside the kitchen door has a problem - hit the panic button, and that audible alarm is going off, and someone will come running.

All sorts of things have been done, to keep these folks safe.
They have plans, keep tabs and have codes they use, little ones, simple still they are "neighborly" .

Some folks do have professional alarms near them, they can afford the systems they have.

I checked this out, had one with more legal skills than I read the contracts and fine print.
We got things in writing.

I and another were right there when these systems were installed, as we don't allow workers in a home, with some folks, by themselves.

The company checked out, very professional, and the techs were too.

Just another tool in the tool box for these folks.
One had been wanting a new system, especially when they asked how easy it would be to bypass the system they had and it took me about 15 seconds to render it - useless.

I apologized to the alarm rep, because I was awful, I really was.
I assure you this guy will never say to anyone, that a gun is a bad idea, as I was pretty clear, on my thought on alarms, and how one is not supposed to defend.
He is quite aware of the legal in regard to deadly force around here too.

"You make the Drill Sargent my older brother had sound like a wimp" - he said.
Then I promptly jumped his case for disrespecting the Military.

This 100 yr lady is a itty bitty thing " I shrunk, I was not that big to begin with" she shares.
She might weigh 80 pounds sopping wet, with her 4 post cane.
In her day, she has shared what all she did , including hunting, fishing, and her Service to this Country.

She still has her nicer guns, and there are some in the house...but she cannot do what she once did.

Just another tool in the toolbox, if investigated and verified.

Any one of us can get down, like the 38 year old.
Many of us have aging parents or grandparents.
We all know someone with physical limits, be they the gal expecting , or the person in a wheel chair, or just a 100 yr old lady that likes to snap beans, watch her birds, and read outside.

Home security systems are great for when you're away from home. When you're at home they just let you know when it's time to draw your weapon.

My Brinks alarm system not only supplements my firearms, but it serves as another 'wakeup alarm' for me to alert me to grab my gun.

I ain't putting my life in the arms of someone busy shovelling donuts into their gaping craw at 3am in a call centre.

Nice sterotype. Since that's what I do for a living, and I'm pretty frickin' good at it, if I do say so myself, I'll try not to find offense in what you just said. But it's gonna be difficult to do. Why don't you tell me what you do for a living so I can return the favor?

Seancass, it was nothing to see. Just a couple a random characters and a whole bunch of white space. Rather idiotic and it got deleted.

Last interaction I had with an alarm salesperson was with ADT. I answered the door wearing a pistol. Ruined his whole sales pitch. ;)

M60,

I personally appreciate and empathize with those of you in LEO who work the midnight shift or as my chief used to call it morning watch. (I think it made him feel better). Sterotyping all LEOs is just wrong. Keep up the good work.

It was nothing more than a "-+" with a whole lot of space, down to a "-".

Thus, a "whole lot of nothing".

Probably sleep-apnea. Feel asleep while posting, head hit the keyboard... Wah-la.

An alarm system is good when

a) You're away from the house.
b) As a signal to grab the .45/12ga/"EBR"/GL/RPG/Howitzer/Nuke.

(Only reason for "EBR" is I always thing enhanced battle rifle when I see EBR not evil black rifle, plus AK-47's are not black, but the still are the epitome of baby-killing-kitten-kicking evil...)

Brinks operator: Our monitors show a break in. Are you OK?

Me: Yeah, I'm fine, but this guy lying here with a German Shepherd attached to his balls, 2 holes in his chest and one in the middle of his forehead ain't having the best day of his life, though.

I just thoroughly ruined a keyboard over that. :p

"Hello, this is Brinks Security. Is everything alright?"

"No, somebody just tried to break in and my husband wet himself!"

"Where's your husband now; is he ok?"

"He's under the bed in a foetal position, crying for his mommy."

Sure some of these ads are cheesy, and have a serious slant to them in regard to an alarm keeping folks safe.

Just keep in mind, we at THR are being watched by those against us, and will peruse posted replies to find those to work against us.

We also do not do blood lust threads here at THR.

An alarm, is just part of the tools of a tool box, not the tool.
The same thing we stress around here in regard to guns, knives and anything else.
Part of the tool box, not the toolbox.

True.
Buddy of mine had an expensive alarm system, and expensive specially trained German Shepard.

He, his wife, and two kids had to be trained with this GS.

He was in town, running errands and his family at home.
Alarm was set, as it was for when folks are at home.

Criminals by-passed alarm, and shot and killed the German Shepard through the second door.
Meaning he had a front door, then a few steps later, the real metal door, to gain entry to home.

He and his wife are accomplished shooters, she served in IDF.

She got the kids, went to the safe room, where she stayed.
Gun shots alerted one neighbor, the back up system, battery operated , sent out an audible alarm, with light atop house to assist Police in both daylight and nighttime.

Practiced plans, layers of defense, and these two had some serious training under their belts as did the GS.

Years later, and with another GS specially trained, and advances in Alarms, his GS heard a noise, and actually set off the alarm as he was trained to do.

They had moved, still had a layered defense system in this house.

Criminals were not hard to find, one left part of his hand, and one the person the hand fit, he sang like a canary about the other criminal.

Legal.

In his instances, no charges were filed.
Granted he had sophisticated alarms, still the principals apply to even a cheesy ad alarm.

If matters get serious, officers are going to investigate.
If there is a shooting, and "Problem Two" is nigh.

Beyond a reasonable doubt and What a prudent person would do in this situation, are going to be heard over and over again in a court of law.

The alarm being tripped, has a time stamp.
Then add any other features and these can "document, document, document" your version of what went down.

Even if the alarm is not expensive, hitting the panic button sets off a time stamp.
Spouse calls 911.
Both of you retreat, ( stay hid in bedroom for instance) and your jurisdiction does not require this , still you do.
Worse comes to worse and criminal breaks the bedroom door down, enters, with a weapon and states intent, and you have to shoot....

Your back is covered, the time stamp is there, even if the 911 call is dropped, it too can be time stamped and the reaction time of First Responders is time stamped and event can be easily put together to assist you.

I have an alarm system. I got it for 2 reasons. I travel a lot, and my hearing is shot. I'm HOPING the sucker will wake me up if somebody breaks in while I'm snoozing. Hopefully, I won't find out. If it wasn't for mt infernal internal alarm clock, I'd be late every day. I hate waking up at 6 AM on the weekend, though.

I figured the alarm was a wise precaution. There are only three houses on my road without wheels, and ours is one. Kind of like a bullseye.

You make a living shoveling donuts into your gaping craw at 3:00am?

Damn...

J.C.

Not anymore. I'm managment now. I shovel my doughnuts during the later morning.

I have a security system, and practically every one I know has one.

No offense to those that do not care for Alarm Systems, but you are being foolish.

Do you ever leave your home? If so, you can be armed to the teeth and your house is getting robbed.

Have a dog? A .22 rimfire takes care of that and your neighbors likely will never know-- especially if you live in a rural area.

As I see it, an Alarm System is the stop watch. When it springs, the crooks have as much time as it takes for a response from the LEO's to take what they can. This makes a prepared, detailed invasion into a "Smash and Grab."

Around her, my LEO response is between 25 and 35 minutes. Having a crook getting 30 minutes to get what he can verses the 8 hours that I am at work is a hell of a lot better.

Think about it. Let's say that you leave your home every day at 7:30 to be at work at 8:00 AM, and that you don't get home until around 5:30 or 6:00 PM. I would wager that a crook could get everything except a molded baloney sandwich in your fridge in that time.

Ask me how I know. In Dec. 2006, I had to live in my hunting camp for a couple months while I was getting my home restoration up to a livable condition. It didn't have an alarm system. Sometime after I left to go to work, I got broken into and they leisurely searched my entire home for goodies.

Another interesting one:

A friend of my Father-in-Law has a nice Gun Safe sitting in his living room. Within a week of some workers coming to his house, he came home from work to find his Gun Safe on a Dolly sitting in the middle of his front lawn. It seems that it rained recently and the ground was soft. The crooks bogged down their dolly in the front lawn and couldn't get it out. But they still cleaned out the man's house.

It is rather disturbing to me that crooks would have free reign at my house for an entire work day.

Oh... I failed to mention.. the man had a large outside dog. It was found dead-- shot by the crooks.

However, let me say this....

If you DO have an alarm system, make SURE you have the Cellular Backup. There are places outside your home that it is easy to disable your land-line phone. If it can't dial out, you aren't getting a response. A Cellular Backup ends that.

Just something to think about.

It's a good idea but some sophisticated criminals are now being caught with cell-jammer equipment.
...and the "arms race" goes on and on.
