Tired of these high primer prices

I still have primers from the early 90s, mostly CCI, that I load. They function just fine and go bang. Several years ago, I believe pre COVID Cabella's was selling off their remaining S&B (Seller & Bellot) inventory. Large rifle were $18 per 1,000. I figured why not since I will eventually get to them. This despite having a pile of primers on hand. I told my wife I was ordering 5,000 primers. Heck at $90 not like I had to even ask. Something seemed wrong like my order didn't go through. So I ordered again and the first order did go through. I still have all of them. I likely have more primers than I have remaining life. :)

Yeah but they don't have the state tax on gas most places do. Lol. Here in NC it was 99 cents then.
I miss living in the South! long for it!

there were two shops in Charlotte that sold reloading stuff! Hyatt & Littles Hardware store

In order to make your “me time” less expensive, load on a single stage press instead of a progressive. It will reduce the number of primers you use per hour. 🤓

I wish I had that issue, this will probably last me for a LONG LONG time.

I am trying to get stuff done before I have back surgery this summer, I won't care I have this ammo after the surgery but it will be ready for plinking in 2025 at least.

It took me 3 hours to load 500 on that 450, I wish I was faster on these style presses it is what it is.

I've got a few sleeves of CCI LRP's that have a price of $0.87 on them. They came from my father when he was reloading, probably from the late 70's.
The next time I get paid I'll have to bite the bullet and pay upwards of $10 per sleeve, to replenish my LRP stock.

I've been going to hyatt for years. Horrible location but decent enough store. The bars in the window have bars to protect them and a uniformed officer at the door all hours. Lol. Grown a lot in the past 10 years. Lol.

When I started reloading in the early 90s, Winchester primers were $10/k at the fun show. Just before the pandemic, I paid $35/k. It would be nice to see them come back down below $50/k.
Sportsman had them for $59/k for about 2-3 months. I loaded up with 15+ bricks. One box per visit, just change your hat. Very glade I did, have enough SPPM for a few years of shooting .357 hot loads

In 2010, a guy (Laszlo Hanyecz) traded 10,000 Bitcoins for two Papa Johns pizzas (delivered). Today those coins are worth $418,000,000.
During that summer, Laszio traded another 90,000 Bitcoins for pizza. That’s an equivalent of $3,762,000,000 in todays dollars.
So in the grand scheme of things, what primers cost in the past is relatively unimportant. Price is just a number.

Yup.

I miss $5 pizza-pizza - 2 Detroit-style square pizzas covered in cheese and pepperoni - and $5,000 for a new car - economy line Mercury or Buick - but I don’t miss $3/hr wages or 16% interest rates on first-time mortgages. And I definitely don’t miss skyrocketing… inflation… or, um…. huge boondoggle deplo…
Never mind.

1982, we qualified for our first mortgage at 15.75% for a 30 year loan. The house we were trying to buy failed inspection, and by the time it was fixed our lock had expired and the rate had climbed to 19.25%, which disqualified us based on our debt to income ratio. (Thank goodness, as we moved a year later and would have lost money reselling the house). Oh, by the way the two bedroom 1 bath older home in Hoquiam, Washington was selling for $28,000.

Interesting trip down memory lane...........now let me ask you a question, real question.

When you run out of your stash, or decide to stock up again, and you go to get primers in todays world of ballpark $100 to use round numbers. What are you going to do?

I know some people that just quit shooting when they dried up.

Just think it is a dime in just the primer every time you pull the trigger. Is that going to be in the back of your mind now, and are you going to see that as just too much.

I have been buying 2 to every one I dent. It's not the most fun but I am in my forties and God willing have a lot of shooting left. What adds to the injury is the price of H4350 it's like .40 cents of powder every time I shoot my 7mm. If it got really bad I would shoot more .22 LR. I probably shoot half the round count during range sessions compared to pre covid, 50 rounds of handgun/ rifle is enough to keep me sharp.

Can’t answer for anyone else but my answer is, No, it won’t bother me an inch.

Prices are what they are and so are wages. I’m making a dime or two more than $3/hr now and can afford the difference.

I'll pay it and continue to shoot when I want or can. I don't have to like today's prices, but if I want to shoot I will have to resupply at some point.

FWIW, I've been buying powder and primers since covid hit a few years ago. So I've spent between $40 and $100 for primers, and as high as mid $40's for powder. I've been telling my reloading buddy to stock up, basically buy as he finds stuff, but instead he has bought two motorcycles and three cars. I recently sold him some large pistol primers because he ran out, and now he can't find them. I have enough that I can keep shooting for awhile and still have some to spare or share.

Everybody is different, and has different thresholds for what they'll spend.

You can go back to my first posts on the subject and see I’ve been very consistent: I don’t worry about prices, I am concerned about availability. Empty shelves with low prices on dusty displays does nobody any good. Full shelves that get emptied and restocked, even if it’s with higher priced goods - as long as the quality remains high as well - are far preferable.

Suppliers will always pass costs down to consumers. It matters nothing who the suppliers are, nor who the consumers are, suppliers must meet costs and those costs must be paid. End of story.
