Too many guns is like too much fun.

You cannot have enough.
Some great posts before this one. And yeah I have had two wives. The first I divorced as I come home early from a business trip, and caught her in bed with a co-worker, the other to Pancreatitis (sp?).

I had more guns at age 7 than I do now. Life happens and it happens fast.
I mean I have a lifetime concealed carry and no conceal carry gun. And some of you know of me, my history, and...then again not everything defaults to "gun".

The rule is having guns in three off site locations, I had five off site locations. Mother Nature hit three primary sites, taking most everything I had, including firearms.

The other two off site locations is the reasons I have what firearms I have, and have been starting all over again (not the first time, just it gets tougher with age) with everything, and not just firearms.

Mentors and Elders taught me well, and in some respects I have become them. My life mirrors theirs.
We must have ticked off some folks in another life.

Life is life, reality is real. One cannot have too many guns, nor have too much fun.

Steve

Ever since I was a wee lad, I have always dreamed of a hidden room behind a bookcase, that when a certain book was moved, would open to reveal a storehouse of some of the greatest weapons ever manufactured. From a simple hand cannon to a selection of modern firearms. It's at the top of my "If I ever become a millionaire" list. I wouldn't need to shoot every one every single day, I'd just like to have that option.
I loved the movie Commando too.

I used to be in the camp of you can't have too many guns (and idealistically, I still believe it) but then I met a guy one day who owned an old school surplus/gun/militaria store. He took me on a tour of his building and he had guns (and a little of everything else) everywhere, stacked in piles, under rugs tucked in corners just lying about all over the place. Some were inventory and others were his personal stuff. Then the thought which I never thought would cross my mind popped up "Wow, this guy has too many guns."
For the record, never would I ever suggest that this guy be forced to give up even one of those guns. But for me and my purposes, I don't, even if I had the cash, see myself being that gun rich. Each one I buy is special in it's own way and has a purpose, and usually I have to save up a while to get it.

Maybe that's how it was with him, but I just got the impression he was hoarding. :p

I don't believe there should be a limit on how many guns one owns, but I just don't see the point if there just going to be lying around in piles.

I've been guilty of the same thing... and it drives me nuts as I want a new gun when I have some I've never shot... but what is the point in getting guns you can't properly break in... sight in... and become very familiar with... break in all accessoris and new mags... etc... at what point do you have "too many guns"?

Never, its called "collecting". Especially with older guns that are going to be difficult to find parts for should you shoot them and they break.

I think I've shot everything in my collection at least once, just to see if it works and to get a feel for its design. But only a favorite few see consistent range time.

Hello my name is Leadcounsel and I have a problem! I like to have a variety of examples of modern and historical weapons. And guns are really really bad@@@.

I like to collect, look at it as a hobby that is also and investment, and want to have a dowry to hand down to my kids and grandkids. Guns also make great gifts - I gave my brother and neigbors Mosin Nagants for presents.

I don't play all the guitars I own all the time. I don't play all the Xbox games I own all the time. I don't watch all the movies I have all the time. Just like I don't shoot all the guns I've got all the time. Guns are a hobby. I am interested in a lot of types, and want to own them, if nothing else, for the sake of owning them.

I get great pleasure when friends come over, we go into my gun room and open a couple of my safes and I ask "OK which ones do you want to try this time". No such thing as too many firearms or reloading stuff.:D

I've become somewhat of a black hole for firearms myself. Outgrew safe, working on hardening an entire room... It may be too many for some but for me I see it as one of my retirement funds. Cash, gold, ammo, firearms - all financial instruments to have around in adequate ratios. Don't like having all my eggs in one basket.

You have too many guns when you have so many you can't securely store them.

That, or when purchases cut into bills, rent, food, etc.

I do what a few of the other people here do. I buy something and use it till I lose intrest and then I move on. I had a 336 marlin in 30-30 for a ouple years and sold it to my dad to get a bolt action 30-06. I sold my ruger 10/22 and mossberg 500 to my brother to buy a ruger sp101 which I sold to my dad when I was strapped for cash. Then I got a ruger p95 just to see how it felt to carry a full sized hand gun. Just today I traded a springfield xd40sc for a cz75b and im trading my ruger p95 for abother mossberg 500 later this week. Ive baught more than 15 guns in the last 2 years and right now I only have an ak47, a cz75, a savage 30-06, and a mossberg 12ga. after I trade. I however do not plan on buying any more guns for a very long time. These 4 cover all my bases or now.

I have a lot less than I used to. I had several rifles in Alaska during the 30 years I lived there but now I have mostly pistols and revolvers I can play with at the local gun club and the county range. Not to interested in hunting down here in the lower 48. I don't think I will accumulate a bunch more than the 9 I have now. I like to shoot them all and don't want any safe queens. Although a .223 and a couple of blackpowder guns would be fun. One problem is space, I'd have more motorcycles if I had a four car garage instead of a three car one. At my age I might have 15 or a few more years to go before the grim reaper knocks on my door, so many guns and bikes and so little time.

Would you rather throw money away on a useless hobby like golf?

...

Funny, I was just thinking that as long as I have more golf clubs than guns it cannot possibly be an issue. Worst comes to worst I may have to buy some more clubs in a few years. ;)

I shoot every gun I own, some more regularly than others. I have swung every golf club I own too. There is one exception - a shotgun that is so old I'm not confident it would be safe to shoot. I use it in a firearms safety class every month or two, so I still do get use out of it. Some of the guns have sentimental value and I'd keep them even if they were no longer functional.

The only time you have "too many" guns, is when it affects your money, in turn affecting your quality of life. If you spend all your money on guns, ammo and gun related items, while sacrificing meals, school, car, insurance or home payments or even your children's needs, then that's crossing the line.

That being said, if you can go out and buy whatever gun stuff you want without it affecting your wallet or life, then there is no such thing as "too much." :) Hell, if I could afford it, a large percentage of my spending money would all go to gun related stuff.

I don't know if you can have too many guns, but I know I was getting to that point.

I looked around one day and realized I had a bunch of guns I didn't need, didn't shoot, and really didn't even want.

So I sold a bunch of them. I don't miss them one bit. They were just "things" really. I've still got more than I "need" but for now, I still want them.

Bought my first gun in January this year, 2011. I now have 9 different types of firearms with a Ruger Super Redhawk on the way. Once it arrives, I'll have ten ranging in caliber from .22 to 44 Magnum, not counting the 12 gauge shotgun which has a second rifled barrel for shooting sabot slugs. My plan is to become proficient with every gun I own. I'm sure a few years down the road I'll have some favorites and might get rid of a few if they become Safe Queens. Still, I want more - next on the list is either Ruger SR1911 or a Glock 20 chambered for 10mm. They are all different, so I guess I'm going against the grain and for a time I'll be a Jack of all trades Master of none.

That said, I agree you have too many if you do not have the room to store them all safely.

I've seen threads of people getting a crazy amount of guns in a short amount of time.. I've been guilty of the same thing... and it drives me nuts as I want a new gun when I have some I've never shot... but what is the point in getting guns you can't properly break in... sight in... and become very familiar with... break in all accessoris and new mags... etc... at what point do you have "too many guns"?

If you want to collect guns, collect guns. If you're buying certain guns to make money though don't shoot those and be very, very patient as in a few decades.

Buying a gun just because you think it would be cool to shoot a few times is silly though.

This is how I explain(or justify) to my wife"Honey, I quit smoking, drinking, and drugs for you. Don't ask about the guns you won't like the answer"
