Top 3 handguns that you regret buying, and top 3 that you regret selling!

Regret Selling;

S&W Model 27 6-1/2 bbl. Bought it when these were cheap, spent some money on it to get it looking & shooting real nice. Circumstances forced me to sell it. When circumstances allowed me to replace it, the prices had skyrocketed and I don’t overpay regardless of how bad I want it.

HK USP 40, traded it for a gun I really like, and this is one .40 that I always liked shooting.

First Sig P228, eventually replaced it with my 2nd P228 which is a great shooting gun but I wish I had both.

Don’t Regret Selling

CZ 75B .40 S&W Duo-Tone prettiest gun that never ran right for me,

Early Gen4 Glock 22 When it didn’t jam it launched brass directly at my eyes, my shooting glasses had nicks In the lenses from flying brass.

Not a Handgun but I’ll toss it in anyway - Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon sporter The wrong gun to try to shoot trap with, replaced it with a Browning Citori XT & was back on track

Only really have the one, the Beretta APX.

Update, just sold the Beretta for what I had in it, so no regrets there.

Also turned a no longer used Glock 26 into a used but nice shape Sig P228. Was a good week.

Regret buying a number of expensive shotguns. Had no regret selling them. Found out for my needs, shotguns at a much lower cost suite me just fine especially for Deer Hunting. And No regret selling them as I did not take any major losses.

I really don’t regret buying anything, as they all helped my firearms education..

Regret selling:

1. Ruger RH bought new in 1982 for $325 in Alaska.

2. My first Glock 21...only Glock I’ve ever sold. Bought a new G21 Gen 4 that spit bullets to my face every mag. Sent back to Glock twice...last time they replaced it with a brand new gun. Never shot the new one...immediately sold it and bought an XDm .45. Wish I’d kept that Glock and at least gave it a try. sold the XDm shortly after...no regrets on that, although it was a decent gun. My current G21 Gen4 is a dandy shooter.

Other regrets were missed opportunities...have lots of those. Dumbest decisions I’ve made over the last 12 years was NOT making sure I bought the two Glock blue label guns I’m allowed every calendar year. At the price, they are like buying silver or gold bars that never decrease in value.

Regret? None, not really.
Can't even regret not buying some earlier than I did.
Even the one straight out of the box lemon, a Taurus PT 945 with factory mis-drilled pin holes, was a learning experience (and when I returned that one, I used it as a trade for a Colt 1903).

Regret selling? Virtually everyone that was not a trade.

Regret buying:

Mitchel Hi-Standard .22LR. Beautiful firearm! Doesn’t work for crap. Traded a Colt Huntsman for it! Actually it didn’t feed well either but as it turns out the Mitchel is worse.

Old model Ruger Vaquero. You couldn’t hit a five gallon bucket 4 times out of 6 off bags from 25 yards. The good thing is I traded it for a Ruger Blackhawk with I think it’s a 4-5/8” barrel that off bags it shoots 4” groups of 6 at 100 yd.

I rarely sell any firearms so that’s about it!

1. 1983 Winchester 94 Trapper (Sold for a wedding ring set) Should have kept the gun!
2. 1978 Remington Gamemaster BDL 30-06 (Pawned and forgot to get out of hock)
3. 1993 Colt King Cobra 4in SS (Sold it like an idiot)
4. NEF Handi Rifle 45-70 (Needed cash)
Out of the 4. I would want to get the King Cobra back. I bought it new for $389. Can't touch em now for less then $1000

I don't remember how many there were but when I first started buying guns I bought 3 or 4 Llamas.

I regret every single one of them.

I only regret selling my first gun, a S&W Model 915.

Three top regrets, bought:

1. S&W Model 629; exact “dash” number not remembered, purchased new in 1984 or very early 1985. I did not understand the dynamics of what was happening, at the time, but I really wrecked my right hand, using an ergonomically-improper grasp, shooting several N-frames with my K/L-sized hands. (Actually, my hands are large enough to love the “feel” of N-Frame, but my index fingers are not long enough to reach the trigger face, in DA mode, while properly holding the grip.) I fired relatively fewer big-bore Mag cartridges lefty, as I fired more .38 Specials lefty, from my “back-up” S&W Model 60, and other snub-guns. The .44 Mag was more than needed, for human opponents, and the only dangerous living things I ever hunted were humans.

2. S&W Model 629 Mountain Revolver, .44 Magnum. For the same reasons as above.

3. S&W Model 629 Mountain Gun, .44 Magnum. Same reasons as above.

Significant regrets, not necessarily the “Top Three,” and not all handguns, for having been sold:

1. S&W Model 581, .357 Magnum. This is the one I should have kept, for police duty and personal defense, instead of upgrading” to those stainless S&W .44 Mags.

2. Uzi Carbine, 9mm. Now know as the “Type A.”

3. Colt AR15A2 Govt Carbine, 223/5.56 NATO, pencil-barreled. I bought this one, with PD letterhead, in 2002, during the AWB, to use as a patrol rifle, on duty. I sold it to a colleague, with younger eyes, a couple of years later, as part of a plan to buy a 20” AR15, for the longer sight radius. (Optical sights were not OK, for duty; irons were mandated.) In hindsight, I should have bought another upper unit, or had my upper rebuilt.

Charter arms ar-7 (6 moths and 2 rebuild and it was a single shot)
S&W M&P sport II with crimson trace red dot (price was sub $500, but that think is horrible, handguard will not come off somehow, gas block was canted)

Regret buying...
Ruger p89, broken safety issue led to me using it for trade fodder with full disclosure. Bought it cheap, traded it cheap.

An antique pocket pistol from the 1880's. Paid a fair price, but I only bought it because it is mechanically interesting and it was a novelty to get it through the mail directly instead of having an ffl transfer it. $350 for a worn out gun in an obsolete chambering , the novelty wore off pretty quickly.

S&W 22A1, pure junk that made my fingers bleed one afternoon from clearing so many ftf's

I regret selling my first handgun, a s&w m66. Bought another to make up for my loss

Colt trooper mkIII 6" sold to pay bills during hard times. Kept it's 4" sibling though, to mitigate the sting

Early production interarms ppk, sold because I had a ppk/s but I'd rather have kept the ppk and sold the ppk/s

I'll 2nd the regret having sold a High Standard Victor back in the 70's and a Browning Hi Power in '71. Beautiful gun that BHP, but not as accurate as I'd have liked. Carried its twin for 10 months during my first tour in Vietnam...another regret at not having tried to get it home...spent a lot of sleepless nights, listening to the tinkle of the cans in our concertina surround and wondering if it was the wind or the real DEAL out there in the wire. I have only sold one firearm, to a friend who need one, a shotgun!
Don't have a lot compared to some and more when compared to others.
Still have my first handgun I bought in 1966. A colt Python, I had to give my dad the money for because I was not of legal age to buy. Got 50 38's and 50 357 in the deal. Probably the best $175.00 I ever spent on a firearm

Regret buying: 1) Cobra C22M 22 WMR derringer, 2) Omega HS-300 nickel-plated 22LR revolver, (both junk), 3) RIA XT-22 22 WMR 1911 clone (I disassembled it and couldn't get it back together working properly).

Regret selling: only IWI Jericho 941 9mm.

Tough choice, as I have no real regrets, but if I had to choose:

Top 3 handguns I regret buying:

1. Colt Wiley Clapp Government Model - That thing was a jam-o-matic, went back to Colt once, still jammed, had random FTE's and FTF's no matter what ammo was used. Decided no to bother with it anymore.
2. EAA Windicator .357 - Not really a bad gun, but no available replacement grips and a horrid trigger meant I never shot it.
3. SIG Sauer P220 Compact - Great shooting gun, but the factory 6-round mags could not accommodate anything but standard FMJ.

Top 3 handguns I regret selling:

1. Colt 01970A1CS - Good shooter and an even better looker. Sold it because I was furloughed and needed money. Nicest gun I ever got rid of.
2. CZ PCR - Don't remember what I traded it for, but I miss that gun. Fantastic shooter, great size, accurate, and I'm a Du-Mass for selling it.
3. SIG Sauer P229 non-rail German frame - Same exact configuration as an M11-A1 without the sticker or phosphate internals. Hard to find these nowadays, build quality was superb.

I'll mention one handgun that I regretted buying: a Walther PPK/S back in the early 70's. The trigger pull was so heavy and rough that I couldn't shoot it worth a hoot. I soon traded it for another gun.

There were other handguns that I didn't regret buying, but that I also didn't regret selling. These included the 1917 Colt and 1917 Smith & Wesson (.45 ACP), the 1909 Colt (.45 LC), and the 1890's DA Colt (.38). All these had trigger pull issues, and (except for the .38) were just too big and awkward ergonomically.

The same is true, to some extent, regarding the Beretta 92 / M9. But I'm still working on that, and noticing some improvement with judicious alterations.

Regret buying? 1. Keltec PF-9 (sold it) 2. Raven MP-25 (Still have it, no one wants it) That's pretty much it.
Regret Selling? None. I've only sold guns I didn't use anymore.

Regret buying:

1. Remington R1 1911. What junk, barrel swelled to the point that the bushing was clamping on the barrel and causing failures to return to battery. Then the finish was trash, left it out one night to return to a surface rusted gun.
2. Sig P226.....(in 40 S&W) I have since sold that upper and bought a 9mm. I just prefer to shoot for less cost, nothing against the 40

Regret buying/also regret selling:

1. My S&W 686+, this is because I LOVED the gun so I hated to sell it, but I also regretted buying it due to the fact that I could never get the timing on the cylinder fixed with S&W, after the second trip to their shop and it came back just as I had sent it. I decided to sell the thing and be done with it.
