1) K-31, the fine swiss watch of bolt action milsurps. Absolutely tops in all regards
2) VZ-24, Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia because he wanted one of them :D
3) Swedish Mauser, probably the best Mauser ever (not higher on my list because of non-warfare handicapping)
3) Springfield '17, the doughboy's best friend and proven sniper rifle
4) Arisaka, early WWII: indestructable and deadly accurate

As a sidebar, The Top Five Non German military Mausers?
1904 Portuguese not really a K98, but made by DWM in Germany rebuilt in 1939 and changed to 8x57.
Modelo 1895 made for Chile by Loewe in Berlin 7x57
Can anyone add more?

Not much has been said of the elegant M 98/29 Persian Mauser. I bought one from Samco and came in VG condition with lots of ding on the stock . I shot it and they hit high at 100 yds as they start at 300 meters if im not mistaken . I returned it and got a full refund. They were accurate though but hard to move the front sight post for some reason. Got to have a special tool for it.

Since I'm the OP.... :D

I'd be willing to forgo a nice (8mm) Persian Mauser if I could find a stellar example of a 7mm Mauser instead. I have no desire to shoot an 8mm. The Persian would have ended up a safe queen.

I read that the 1908 Brazilian and 7x57 Vz.24 variations are the ones to get. Any others?

An Enfield #4 or #5 has aperture sights, a thin, protected front post and a nice sight distance.
The action is also smooth, and it holds twice as much ammo as a classic Mauser.

You probably can't beat the handiness and light weight of an authentic "Jungle Carbine" (#5).
A charging adult grizzly was reportedly stopped by four shots from a #5.

How about the classic Chilean 7mm Mauser? A very experienced (with guns, and the stock market), astute friend who has three dozen milsurp rifles bought one.
Samco is selling some cheap 7mm Mauser surplus ammo, but the ammo has mixed reviews.
This must explain the low price.

Husqvarna Vapenfabriks AB m/96.
Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I.
Karabiner 98k.
M1903 Springfield.
Arisaka Type 30.

Those would be my pick..........

I got my wish. I bought an unissued Venezuelan 7mm Mauser in new condition. I can mark the Persian, Brazilian and Vz.24 all off the list now. It may have cost me a bit, but by eliminating three "needs", it was worth it.

Once I get a 1903a3 and M96 Swede to complement my m/38, I can slow down and take a break.

To answer Bojangles7 below: Bought off AuctionArms. No have yet. You can take a looksee here: http://www.gunauction.com/buy/10997682
For the same price as a new Persian Mauser at Samco, in a caliber I prefer, it was a no brainer.

Nathan, the Persian mauser can hit high at 100yds but as you can see from pic what I experienced was that from one notch setting to the next on the rear sight impact changes from either below the bulls to above with 196gr ammo.

However I have two persians and both hit within the bulls area with 170gr ammo. Windage still needing to be corrected. I wish Prvi would load a grain lesser than 196gr as I don't handload and American made ammo is excessively expensive.

But the Persian is a incredible and beautiful version of the mauser that is not that rare to find and a pleasure to shoot.

Speaking of pleasure to shoot. I understand the concept of "safequeen" and there is nothing wrong with just collecting but shooting them at least sparingly and seeing what they can do is part of the joy of being into them and if you care for them shooting them sparingly isn't going to ruin them I think.

Valnar lol, yeah it starts innocent enough. You swear you just want a couple, then next thing you know you are making reasons to buy more types. Then you start making reasons to yourself to buy another of a type you already have. It's called mil-surp fever. Something that comes close to milsurp fever is GAS, "gear acquisition syndrome" which usually refers to guitars players and their constant excuses for buying more guitars and stuff although the "G" could stand for "gun" also I guess.:p

South American contract Mausers are things of beauty my favorite being the Argentine 1909.

But for listing my favorite top 5 surplus bolt actions for shooting fun I would say

1# K31 or Swiss 1911 which is among the most accurate surplus bolt models known

2# Swedish M96 also very accurate and made with craftsmanship

3# Argentine 1909, Brazilian 1908 or Persian Mauser all being exquisite Mausers and not that rare to find

4# M1903a3 specially with a C-stock.

5# Enfield NO4. Can be very accurate and a very solid design.

With a nod to the Mosin M39 which can also be very accurate
