USGI mil-surp collection well exceed five rifles. They well not be getting cheaper any day soon.

Krag
US Springfield M1903
US M1917
M1903A3
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
M1A/M14
AR15/M16

Nice list here except ....4 aren't bolts. I do own them all as well. More than a few of some..that could be my forget everything else list but those pesky 6.5's keep coming to mind

Top 5 in no particular order

1886 Lebel=1st smoeless powder repeating bolt action

1903A3 C stocked Springfield=it has useful sights & a very good stock design

K98 Mauser=Because it is a K98 Mauser

91-30 Mosin Nagant=Has stood the test of time

#4Mkll Enfield=Good trigger excellent sights, excellent action

VZ24 Czech Mauser action rifle=Sold all over the world, better overall quality than the German K98

Add the Model 71/87 Mauser to the list.

And the Berthier Mle 1907/15.

And the MAS-36.

I find it odd that some are speaking out against the M1891 Mosin Nagant rifles as a valid addition to the list, as they were used in two world wars as well as a massive civil war and various "purges" in between the world wars. Fought against itself and won, every time.

'mericun
1903a3
1917
M1 Garand
AR15
Trapdoor Springfield

World - bolt action
some kind of Enfield
some kind of M/N - probably an M39
Arisaka (with intact flower mark)
some kind of Mauser
K31

my list though not shared by many others is
1. springfield 1903
2. 30 cal model 1917/pattern17 whatever you want to call it
3. nice K98
4. Enfield SMLE
5. mosin nagant 91/30 just because it's cheap and you wont feel bad if you shoot it to death.

PS both of the OP'd mausers are very nice.

Not one person here listed either the 1891 or 1909 Argentine mausers? For shame!

How about a MAS 36?

I like mine quite a bit, and it is pretty good at hitting what I point it at....very under rated rifle.

"Best" is a qualitative term. But if your goal is the inherently highest quality surplus arms, you need to include a Greek Mannlicher-Schoenauer in there as well. And a Persian long Mauser.

I just looked up Persian Mauser. Yep, I believe that is the ticket I want. That plus a M1903A3 and I should be good.

In no particular order:

Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk. 1*
Mosin-Nagant 91/30
K98
Springfield 1903

Then at Number One:

K31

I think that's everyone's mil-surp list. The only K31 I own is so accurate no one believes it's almost seventy years old.

I know everyone is getting tired of hearing about it, but my new Japanese Type I is really growing on me after its first range trip today. An added bonus is that it is two milsurps in one... Half Carcano and half Arisaka...

The underrated Italian Carcano made its name resonate far and wide in 1963 when JFK was assassinated. Never underestimate a rifle , its the person behind and not the rifle as they said.

That's something about the Carcano I never understood if it did what they claim in 63 why does everyone I know call them junk.I almost brought one yrs.ago but got talked into what a piece of junk they are.I should of brought it just to have now that I think about it.

My guess would be what happened in '63 combined with the Italians less than stellar military record in the modern era...

Why limit yourself to just five rifles. Hell I have 11 different enfields.
I think one's collection should be just a few more then what his safe can hold because, you always need one or two to hang on the wall.
