Hey guys, I think I need some moral support or something like that. I've got a 6.5" 610 that's a real sweet shooter, plus over a hundred full moon clips. Problem is, it's just big enough that I'd often rather grab something else that's easier to carry when I'm hiking around in the back country. I've actually been having thoughts of trading it off for a  G20SF! I handled one today at the local FFL and, well, it's no Smith. But, it holds 15+1!

Smith pros:
-Steel, will outlast me.
-Rare.
-Great trigger.
-Accurate.
-Supported chamber. I handload full house.

Smith cons:
-Big & heavy.
-Only holds 6 rounds, plus maybe an extra moon clip or two.

Glock 20 pros:
-15+1 of 10mm!
-Easier to carry when hiking / fishing / etc. in the mountains.

Glock cons:
-It's plastic. While I know they're hard to kill, it's still.. plastic.
-Have to drop another hundred bucks to get a supported barrel.

Usage:
Realistically, the only thing I "need" a 10mm for is that I like it for woods carry. It's never really been my go-to pistol for the range mostly because of ammo cost & the lack of brass availability, compared to other things I have around.

Alternative option:
I've really considered sending the 610 back to Smith & have them cut the barrel to 4 1/8". This would a) make it far easier to carry & b) make it legal for IDPA, which could be a hoot. With a couple moon clips in the pocket I wouldn't really be at a disadvantage over the G20, and I wouldn't lose out on owning a fine, out-of-production firearm.

So let's hear it. What would you guys do?

The 610 is a fantastic gun but it's not a great choice for conceal carry. If you need a lighter carry gun and can't afford to buy it, then sell the 610 as it's worth more than the Glock so you'll pocket a few dollars for ammo. Better, keep it and save up for the Glock!

You will hate yourself if you sell the 610 outright. Better to call S&W and see if they have a 3" or 4" barrel for it.

I dunno your financial situation or w/e, but hell, why not keep it and get yourself a Glock, start a collection, IMHO every shooter needs at least one auto and one wheel gun.

Keep it, get a 20 or keep it, get a 20 and a 310. Your 100 MC's could be shared with the 310. I sent my 4" 610 to S&W and had them put a 6.5" tube on it. Wish I had'nt now but I still have the 4" tube. I may ream the 6.5" to 10mm Mag and get a 310. Whatever you do, don't sell the 610!

You'd be totally crazy to get rid of it. By all means shorten the barrel a little if that's what you want. Even shortened it would still be a great woods gun with 10mm rounds. And with the option of using .40S&W loads for IDPA you've got the best of both worlds. Besides, a revolver doesn't toss your expensive and hard to find 10mm brass off into the weeds. The moonclips keep it all nicely held together in one easy to see lump.

If you feel you need a 10mm semi to give the 610 a companion then by all means. But you'll kick yourself silly later on if you sell the 610 now.

Don't mess up the 610 6.5, find another 610 with 2.5 or 3 inch barrel, Even better find a 1006/1066 or both. Then add the Glock. Oh wait that is what I did. LOL

Good Golly, keep the 610. Hopefully it's a pre-clinton gun. Does it have the unfluted cylinder too? We've all been there, held something new and different, got all excited, thought about doing it, and then our logic kicks in.

You will hate yourself someday if you get rid of the 610. EVEN if you had the barrel changed, you get to keep the original, and at worst, pay to have it swapped back someday.

You may never find another 610 in the condition that you want. Get another job, sell a kidney, whatever you need to do to buy the glock and keep the 610, just don't sell the 610.

LOL I'm sensing a theme, thanks for the support guys. :) I found the 610 about a year ago, it was still NIB at a dealer who had it buried in the back due to "lack of interest". Imagine that! It had been there for a couple years so I got a great deal on it. It is a -3 so it has the standard cylinder & the lock, but I've never had a lock issue in a steel smith. (But I have in a few of the scandium / aluminum ones, no more of those for me..)

Wife & I have our first kiddo on the way so no more buying for a while! I know y'all are right though, I should just have Smith swap a shorter barrel on it so I can keep & use it. I would kick myself for sure if I sold it off.

Keep the 610. That's what I did with mine. Then I bought a 1006 and then my first Glock the 20 when it came out as an SF. This weekend I bought a 29 SF.

Get a G29. Do not sell the 610.

If there is no way you can swing a 29 without selling the 610, then forget the 29, and see if getting a different rig/belt for your 610 would make hikes more pleasant.

I'm a die hard Glock guy and I even think you're crazy.

G20 is a great gun and a perfect gun to go with a 610, but there's no way in hell I'd sell a 610 to fund a G20.

You're going to need both. Save up.

hold your horses!

get in touch with BC Armory for the finest revolver work available, and have a 4" barrel installed, plus a gold bead front sight and a few other tune-up items and resume your charmed life as the proud owner of a 610. i did it with my mod. 21 in .44 special and i have never looked back. good luck.:what:

I have to agree with others...about 3 weeks after getting rid of the 610 you will be crying in your beer over it. I often carry my 5 1/2 inch 625 in the wood using a Kramer cross draw holster. Carries very nicely in it, is comfy in the car, and even conceals fairly well under my safari vest.

Get a Smith 10mm auto, or a G29, or a G20, but don't sell that revolver! Sheesh.

Scrimp for a while, save up, and buy the lighter hiking gun you want, whether that's a 3" .357, or a Glock. Your Smith is a great range gun, hunting revolver, and probably HD revolver. Doesn't sound like you ought to sell it. Hard to make a gun do a lot of different things perfectly - no one gun is adequate for all jobs.

I think you have a great idea but I also happen to have an unfired NIB G20 sitting in the safe I would gladly trade you for it. I'm with the others, keep it. If you don't PM me first.

I am lucky enough to have a G20, G29, 610-3, and a DW Razorback. The 10mm is one of my favorite rounds. I'd love dearly to punch out the 610 to 10mm mag. Let me add my voice to those who said that you will regret selling it.
