Which of the following would you prefer on your AR-15's magazines for CQB or home defense use...Magpuls or Ranger Floor Plates?

Why?

I normally use nothing, I just take the magazine as it comes. However, if I was to use a magpull device I'd choose the Floor Plates. I decided against the MagPull brand when prepping for my last tour because they were so thick as to prevent me from keeping two magazines in my 2-magazine pouch.. they just wouldn't fit.
Seems like floor plates would circumvent that problem, but I suppose I've just gotten comfy and fast enough (for me) with not using pulls at all.

So the magazine should fit inside standard mag pouches with the Ranger Plates installed or do they have to be ordered special?

They should work in most pouchs. Head over to getoffthex.com and goto the gear section and buy something from john willis you won't regret it.

I switched to Ranger pulls, I am glad I did! It holds on my finger during mag retention drills better than the original Pulls did!

For CQB? Would anyones choice actually change if you were engaging targets at intermediate distances or sniping?

Anyways I think your choice should be dependent upon your mag pouches. Half of my mag pouches don't close on ranger plates so I have the regular magpuls on most of my mags. I run them sideways so thatthey better protect the bottom of the mag and fit in my pouches. I do have a few ranger plates and while they are excellent kit they don't fit my needs. Of course a ton of people that actually shoot at BG's run the standard floorplate and have great success in hitting their targets and reloading their guns.

What pouch were you using or if you don't know that when was you last tour and with what unit?

My opinion:
I got out before everyone seemed to "need" to have these. I did use 550 cord/tape "solution" when training/conducting MOUT though (it does help with retaining mags on the fly when switching in a new one, but I think it's overrated IMO. Anyway, my vote is to spend $$$ by buying more ammo and/or upgraded followers & mag springs.

I dont care which, I turn the orginal Magpuls so that the loop is just like the Ranger Plates so they fit better in my carriers. I prefer having 2 mags with them just to make my speed mag switches that much easier since I am probably more pressed for time vs a more administrative reload.

I believe the new dual-mag pouches used on the Army's Interceptor system fit very tight to the mag, without the large space at the top like the old style 3-mag carrier which allowed for magpulls. The mags are also now held parallel to the body rather than perpendicular.

Never saw a need for them; my opinion, it's just another fad. Magazine retention - what's that? :D

Had a couple issued mags with Ranger pulls made of 550 cord on them when I was overseas. Tried a couple pulls with them and didn't notice any difference in speed, so I cut them off. IMO, the answer is "niether." Particularly in home defense, where 30 long gun rounds should generally do the job.

I ended up buying my own rig because I didn't like the MOLLE-type LBE/LBV that the Corps was issuing, so I got a Blackhawk RECON chest rig and was using the Blackhawk 2-mag STRIKE pouches.

My last tour was with 1st Bn, 23d Marines; 2004-2005
Not sure what my unit had to do with my magazine pouches, though.....

Your turn.
Who were you with and when were you there?
