so i got a speeding ticket and was issued a mandatory court date because i couldn't find my insurance card, although my truck is insured, since it's just a traffic violation it shouldn't have any affect on gun ownership or possession, or the purchase of a firearm, right??? i'm in kentucky too. since it's just a violation it has no bearing on gun ownership?

thanks
sam

Not likely, as this is a "fix it" ticket. Bring proof of insurance to court, and the charges should be dropped. It shouldn't impact your ownership or possession of firearms one bit.

Just be sure to take care of it, because failure to do so could lead to a situation where more serious charges are pursued against you!

thanks for the quick reply m2, that's what i thought, just have to get the court date with the proof cleared up.

An insurance ticket shouldn't affect your ability to own or possess a gun, but they can be costly if you don't actually have insurance (In Colorado, driving without insurance is a misdemeanor traffic offense, and the first time fine usually runs around $750. An officer in this state also has the ability to suspend a driver's license on the spot for lack of insurance, though that rarely happens on routine traffic stops).

The good news is that you should be able to get the ticket dismissed (wihtout any fine/points) by providing the court with proof of valid insurance that was in effect at the time of the traffic stop. But, again, this isn't the kind of violation that will impact your ability to own a gun!

Here's a link to the Kentucky State Patrol website. A simple Google search revealed the disqualifying factors for CCW permits in KY. Go to this site, and I think it will put your mind at ease:

As long as you prove you have insurance, there should be no fine. I am not familiar with Kentucky laws, but according to this it seems the only problem would be if you didn't have the correct coverage required by law. Also, according to this official Kentucky web site, the county clerk should already have a record of your coverage by the VIN number from the vehicle; but it would be a good idea to bring proof when you go to court.

So, bottom line, as long as you have insurance, there should be no problem...

Shouldn't be a problem. Just bring proof that you had insurance at the time of the stop and it should all go away.

thanks coloradokevin, i looked last night but never saw that part of the website, prolly just overlooked it due to nerves, as i have only ever had one other traffic violation but that was about 4 or 6 years ago, and was only a speeding ticket, kinda looks like you have to have a felony charge, or violent offense to loose your firearm privileges. now to keep from ever having another traffic violation.
thanks again guys

No, a simple traffic ticket won't impact your gun ownership. Otherwise, nearly everyone in the country would have to surrender their guns.

Get a good radar detector and use trapster if you have an iPhone. ;)

From my experience this afternoon (I had my insurance card and registration), in Iowa if you can prove that you had insurance that was in effect at the time of the accident, you normally only end up paying the court costs, but not the fine.

My understanding of Iowa Law is that you are required to not only have financial responsibility (post a bond, have insurance, etc) and have proof of such responsibility in your vehicle. I'm not a lawyer or insurance agent, that's just my understanding.

A simple DUI(alcohol)wont effect your right to a firearm providing its not enhanced into a felony for multiple violations, injury, death, property damage ect. No way a traffick ticket for insurance should even result in a nics delay!

When you go to court, just bring your driver's license, Registration, and proof of insurance. You will need to walk up to the magistrate's bench, and ask to speak w/ them about your charges. They usually have 2 or more since alot of stuff is going on inside the courtroom. They will amend your charges and the judge will just dismiss it.

FWIW,
I am very close to an individual that was convicted of unlawfully carrying a weapon here in Texas about twenty years ago.

Yep, a firearms violation...:what:

He has had zero issues with purchasing, either before or since obtaining his Tx CHL.:D
YMMV.

Sounds like the cop was being a jerk.
I got nabbed without my insurance card and all I had to do was fax a copy of it to KSP HQ. The ticket was dropped.

There is no problem with firearm ownership after a traffic violation.

Just so long as you prove you had insurance. Blow off court cause you had insurance, and a warrant will be issued for you,

went downtown to the court house today, with my proof of insurance, and the county attorney dropped the charges on the citation, as it was my first offense and when the called the insurance company my agent assured them i was a good feller, now all i gotta do is call the clerks office in a few days and make sure the paperwork has been processed to dismiss the court date. i have to just be more careful now and not ever have another reason to worry about these kinds of things

thanks
