but im looking for a more traditional/fun gun. i was at the store again and after feeling the NEW vaquero im going to go that way. 5.5" 45colt... i didnt own a 44 anyway and the colt ammo isnt that much more anyway. the new model cant handle the real crazy loads, but i should be able to find a decent close range whitetail load it can handle. 99% of its shots will be the cowboy style loads though.

If you want a Vaquero, get it. I have had several Super Blackhawks, a few Blackhawks, and 2 original Vaqueros in 44 Magnum, and the 2 Vaqueros are my hands down favorites in the big caliber guns. If you are looking to hold shots to 25 yards the fixed sights will be fine for what you are talking about shooting. Both of mine are dead on horizontally, and there isn't that much difference vertically with a decent range of 200 grain to 240 grain loads. The 200 Cowboy round nose 44 Special stuff should be fine for the small stuff, and once you decide on the load you can adjust the sights so you can hit the small stuff, and any number of heavier loads will be fine for those Virginia whitetail up that close.
The fixed sights just plain do not get snagged on clothes like the adjustable ones do. But, for longer shots and greater accuracy with a variety of loads, it's hard to argue with adjustables.

i dunno these deer here can get close to 100lbs!!!! seriously i shot a few doe that have dressed well under 100

As far as 'commercial' .45 Colt ammo, I'll bet the Speer 250gr Gold Dot JHPs, designed for thin skins, would do a decent job on white tails. Several specialty ammo makers make slightly +P loads to almost baby .454 Casull loads, too, in .45 Colt. I've had many a SA Ruger - every caliber in BHG Vaquero - even a 4.6" SBH .44M I modded with a QPR BHG (.44 Magnums are an experience in a BHG revolver!). All gone now - I like DA shooting and have fewer revolvers now, but all S&W's. My own choice for similar needs is one of my 625 Mountain Guns in .45 Colt:

Good luck - and keep us apprised. Fair warning... seven years ago, I didn't reload. That would change a few weeks later - after getting my first S&W (... a 625 MG in .45 Colt!) and counting my saved empties in .45 Colt from those SA Rugers - >2,700! I ordered a Dillon 550B seven years ago this autumn - and life changed! It was solely for .45 Colt. Within months, I was making .44 Russians, Specials, and Magnums - then bought a .44!And .38/.357's, too, although it would be a year before I owned a .38 or .357M. Lots of other revolver calibers followed. Reloading is a sickness...er, hobby!

i have 30,000 registered trap targets and have resisted the temptation thus far. but in 12 ga it only saved about 2$/25 it seems like in the handgun ammo it goes from 15-30$ per 50 factory to under ten handloaded...

got the 5.5" "case color" (i know its fake) 45 colt new-vaquero. they had stainless, blue, and case, and the case color just looks better than the all blue.

it has the black plastic grips which gotta go, and then i need to find a holster and some bullets!

ill post some once the leather/grips get here get here

got the Rosewood Gunfighter Grips Smooth
and some "cheap" Hunter Leather from midway... should be sweat :)
