Trying to fan the 1858

I have heard of the trigger being tied back so that cocking the hammer and releasing it fired the revolver!

I have read that some old time gun fighters had the trigger removed for quicker/easier fanning in a gun fight. Is their any truth in that?

Y'all read too many paperback novels. Duels in the street just didn't happen with only a very few exceptions.

I have owned several well worn very original colt and rem BP pistols. Never seen any evidence of trigger mods BUT all but two had barrels shortened. Those not shortened had severe muzzle wear from holsters and may be why the others were shortened.

Elmer Keith mentions modifications like this but not for fanning the hammer. The guns and gunmen he mentioned also modified the hammers to be cocked by the thumb and then allowed to slip out from under the thumb, firing the gun. He said it could be very fast and accurate with practice but then, he was Elmer Keith and I suspect most shooting techniques he practiced were fast and accurate.

I have a Short Stroke Sass Pro from Uberti that might be simular to his adjustments. It is very pleasant to shoot like that...someone with more skill than me could really rattle them rounds out...
