Thinking about shooting Steel challenge some next year (or possibly sooner if the matches start back up at the nearest range before then), and the only close to appropriate rifle I have is a 10/22 I pieced together for less action oriented shooting, so the optic on it is less than optimal for steel challenge (I do have a few pistols I could use, but am not leaning that way currently, but that's another discussion). and I have some questions.
First off using the factory provided Ruger scope base, and what looks to be the set of bog standard weaver rings (that secure with an Allen key, not thumbscrews or hex-head nuts) currently on the gun/scope. If I mark the base to make sure I put the rings back to the same position, how far off "zero" or at least the pre-removal alignment, is the old scope likely to be when I eventually swap it back on?
BTW, not a big deal even if I have to completely start over to zero it's just a question that came to mind. I'll eventually buy or build a gun configured way I really want for this use (and a few others but that's another story). So even if I decide to use my current 10/22 and just change to a better optic for the application for awhile (ie while building or searching for more dedicated build) in the end I'll put it back in it's current form, and I wanted an idea of what to expect.
Second, what Red Dot or Reflex sight is a good recommendation for someone looking to get started, and not wanting to have to spend a lot on the optic ($250 is probably about max at this point)?

- tell you the truth I'm probably never going to get really "serious" about SC and doubt I will ever shoot it more than occasionally (ie max maybe 6 times a year).
- Also the only real reason I'm looking into a red dot or frankly any type of optic is that in it's current configuration, I can't set this gun up in my preferred manner. For my own reasons I'd rather have a rifle with peep sights for this. But the barrel on the rifle I have "in hand" has a barrel that is non compatible with sight sets from either tech-sight or Nodak Spud (wrong diameter at muzzle).
- so I have no real interest in getting some super zoom-zoom optic. I just want something that works, and won't break in use or the bank.
- A bonus here is if the optic in question would also be suitable for use on a 9mm carbine. since as noted I do intend to eventually buy or build a rifle of a different configuration for this use, but will also be buying a 9mm carbine in the not too distant future and can obviously see some utility in using the red dot there as well.
