Home invasion investigated

Gilmer Police are searching for a man who fled after allegedly committing a home invasion in which shots were fired Monday afternoon, said Investigator Jon Warren.

According to police reports, two cousins, an 18-year-old and a man in his early 20s, had purchased and were restoring a house in the 500 block of Clark Street. They began having trouble with a neighbor, Sidney Carroll Pickett, 52, of 513 Clark Street.

“They said he had been ‘acting crazy.’ He had been ‘acting crazy’ for some time,” Warren said.

On Monday, the 18-year-old was at his house alone and decided to take a nap prior to resuming work, Warren said.

“While he was lying down, he said Pickett broke open the door to the house and came in with what appeared to be a shotgun in each hand,” Warren said. The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m.

“Unbeknownst to Sidney, the 18-year-old had a loaded pump shotgun by the bed. He picked it up and fired five shots from seven feet away. Apparently, he didn’t hit Sidney,” Warren said.

The investigator said that Pickett beat a hasty retreat, backing out of the house.

According to the 18-year-old, Pickett then fired two shots from one of his shotguns, which hit the wall of the house in two different spots.

“The pellet holes in the wall are consistent with the young man’s story,” Warren stated.

“There was blood at the scene, but it is not known if it was from a wound from one of the shots, or from glass from a window broken in the altercation,” the investigator said.

“Pickett then fled the area in a 1985 blue Ford truck, license plate 6FTH28,” Warren said.

Gilmer Police Sgt. Scott Richardson was the first officer on the scene.

An all-points bulletin about Pickett was released in Upshur County, Warren said.

“He is considered armed and dangerous,” Warren said.

He is believed to have a fresh cut on the back of one hand, and may be mentally unstable as well, the police report said.

Pickett also has an outstanding felony burglary warrant.
He remained at large on Friday.

Proof that you don't rise to the occasion, you are reduced to your level of training. I doubt this guy had much/any.

You gotta admit, missing 5 times with a shotgun at a range of 7 feet takes real talent. I think a competent blind person would score at least twice.

I guess when you shove a shotgun above the top of the couch and begin blazing away unaimed, anything is possible!

Warning Shots!?!?!?

if he was firing warning shot at a man that was armed with two (2) shotguns himself there may be two (2) folks here that are mentally unstable.

“There was blood at the scene, but it is not known if it was from a wound from one of the shots, or from glass from a window broken in the altercation,” the investigator said.

Does glass bleed?

Whether he missed a bunch or not, the young man was rewarded, possibly with his life, for having a loaded firearm next to his bed.

If someone enters my house with a shotgun, the only thing I hope for is that me and mine walk away. Everything else is just details.

Thats a lot of shotgunning to hit nothing
what was that 7 shots total and no hits

Close range shotshells do not spread.

Even bird shot is one big slug until about 15 to 20 feet.

Sounds like he just blasted at the guy's general direction probably had his eyes shut and was panicking.

Alls well that ends well.
