Spending a good bit of time in Texas for work. Some buildings have signs that say no concealed carry. Others have signs that say no open carry. Both referenced a statute. I forget which was 30.06.

A couple LEO happened to be standing by one of the doors so I asked. They said it was just no carry and both signs meant you couldn't carry open or concealed. Is that true?

Not my understanding. 30.06 has been around a while, and that is the "no concealed carry" sign. 30.07 is new and relates to "no open carry." Clearly an establishment could post the latter and still permit concealed carry. Whether 30.06 also precludes open carry is not evident to me. I'm relatively new to Texas, and am no expert, though.

Not a sure source of legal info, but here is how compliant signs are being marketed. Note that both signs must be posted to completely ban carry.

There's also signage pertaining to alcohol consumption/sale, which does bar both types of carry (the 51% signs which seem to appear in a lot of places I have a hard time believing derive 51% of their income from alcohol --seriously, Zoe's Greek Cafe is classed as a 'bar'?)

Whether 30.06 also precludes open carry is not evident to me.
There's a whole lot of government offices who would be in a position to know wasting door-space posting both, I'll just leave it at that ;)

This info is correct. Both signs must be posted to completely ban carry. Each statute applies individually to the form of carry it addresses.

Check out pages 46 and 47. http://dps.texas.gov/InternetForms/Forms/CHL-16.pdf

Hospitals, nursing homes, and drinking establishments have a different sign that applies based on their status.

ETA: Also check out bottom of page 32 - GC §411.204. NOTICE REQUIRED ON CERTAIN PREMISES.

There are various places that are erroneously displaying 30.06/30.07 signs according to the statutes but it's being hashed out slowly.

There is an older sign that pre-dates 30.06 restricting carry that appears on many older buildings to this day. It is obsolete and doesn't carry any weight of law anymore. Unfortunately, I can't recall the verbiage on it.

Both http://www.texaschlforum.com/ and its related site https://www.texas3006.com/ have much info pertaining to the Texas concealed handgun license / license to carry. Any retail establishment may post either the 30.06 signage or 30.07 signage, or both. The red 51% sign is regulated by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, whereas the 30.06 and 30.07 signage are "regulated" by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

I haven't been in TX for a couple years, but I saw exactly three signs the last time I was there.

Two were in the sterile area of the DFW airport (one in a restaurant, and one at a gate). The third said something like "if you don't have a license, you could be in deep stuff".

The DFW restaurant sign was HUGE. The other two were roughly the size of and 8x10 sheet of paper. I believe that the restaurant size sign was 30.06 compliant, just insane.

Here in OH, btw, the sign that the Attorney General recommends contains an "unless authorized" clause. If you look in the Ohio Revised Code, you'll see that licensees are NOT "authorized" for places like Government buildings. Nobody agrees on private posting. Also, OH has no BAC limit for drinking while carrying. As of October 2011, we can carry in bars and restaurants, but cannot drink at all.

Regards,

Texas recently passed open carry, and required most places of business to post a PC30.07 sign if they wanted to prohibit open carry on their premises; such a sign does NOT preclude otherwise lawful concealed carry. When the law was first passed, a lot of places posted both PC30.06 signs AND PC30.07 signs; since then, many of the PC30.06 signs have come down.

Signage in the "sterile" area of an airport is silly - you can't legally carry in the "sterile" area anyway - that's what the TSA screening is there to prevent. No additional PC30.06 or PC30.07 signs are needed, just like they're not needed in certain other restricted areas like courtrooms and prisons. (I think even LEOs may have some restrictions on carry in the sterile area - perhaps they have to be on duty?)

Signs the size of an 8x10 sheet of paper are too small to be valid.
