Yesterday I went to Dixon's in Kempton, PA and bought an Uberti Colt 1862 Pocket Police percussion revolver. My dad had a Second-generation Colt 1862 when I was a kid that I enjoyed shooting so I recently developed a hankering for one.

The Pocket Police is one of the less common 19th Century percussion Colt revolvers. Colt made made from 1861 through 1873 and I've read different production figures given, from 20,000 to about 47,700. It's a 5-shot .36 caliber revolver built on the small frame originally used for Colt's .31 caliber guns. The originals were made in several barrel lengths; my replica has a 6.5" barrel. It weighs about 26 oz. The overall size is similar to a Ruger Single Six.

The Uberti's external finish is very nice but the action is not as smooth as older Ubertis I've handled and shot. For example, my Uberti 1851 Navy came from the factory with a very slick action. I may do a complete tear down and carefully polish the internals.

I put 20 rounds through the 1862 last night using 12 grains by volume of 3Fg Triple 7 powder, a Wonder Wad, a Hornady .375 ball, and Remington No.10 caps. It took me about 10 rounds to get on paper at 10 yards. My target was a paper plate and it turns out that the gun shoots about a foot and a half high at that range, due to the tiny front sight.

Once I figured out where the gun was shooting I was able to get a decent, fist-sized group shooting one-handed at 10 yards.

Unfortunately, I ran into some trouble with the '62. After the 13th or 14th shot, the lug attached to the underside of the barrel, to which the loading lever is latched, fell off. It landed on the table I was shooting over and I was able to tap it back into place but after several more shots, it fell off again. I decided to call it quits with the Uberti then. Darn annoying. :cuss: I also brought my Pietta 1858 "New Army Police" .36 so I shot that the rest of the night. :)

This morning I reinstalled the lug. I first degreased it and the dovetail with some denatured alcohol, then put some Solder-It silver bearing solder paste in the dovetail. After I tapped the lug back into the dovetail and heated the joint over a candle. I think I got enough paste into the joint and heated it enough, but the true test will be when I shoot it again.

I'll post a follow up once I get to shoot the 1862 again and after I'm able to take a decent picture.

One of my first C&B revolvers was a Uberti Pocket Police. That was in the late 70's. My son still shoots it. I eventually bought a 2nd Generation Colt Pocket Police and outfitted it with some elephant ivory. Will always be one of my favorites.

The weather cooperated this afternoon, so I was able to go outside and take some decent pictures.

I'm surprised by the statement that your '62 Police is similar in size to a Ruger Single Six. I have two Uberti 1862 Pocket Police, one 6 1/2" barrel and one 5 1/2" barrel, both 5 shots. They're both considerably smaller than my Single Six which has a 6" barrel.

As for the loading lever latch - sounds like you have a good fix, but should it depart again, try peening the base of the dovetail with a hammer and punch. That should 'broaden' the base for a tighter fit in the slot.

I have two of them. one a CVA Kit gun that wont shoot (the nipples are too long to allow a capped cylinder to rotate), the other a 6 shot Piettia (based on the '62 .36 cal frame w/ semi-fluted cylinder). I really like the origonals but the Piettia is a real good shooter!
I sure wish I could get the CVA shooting but it would take too much machiening and I don't know if there'd be enough brass left to have the gun be safe to shoot after it's been modified?
The diminuitive size of the origonal is great for carrying but the Piettia is also a good carrying belt gun (5 1/2" bbl).
I load 18 to 22g charges in my Piettia.

mykeal ZVP - why not just get shorter nipples???

Probably too easy.

Or just shorten the ones you have? Surgery on clones is nearly a requirement to get them to function properly but try the easy stuff before you modify frames and such.

OAL and height, not thickness are similar, though as you note the '62 is smaller.

Strawhat, that is really nice.

ZVP, the Pietta '62 is really just a shortened 1861 Navy. It's a bigger gun than the '62 Pocket Police. (Pietta and their goofy gun names notwithstanding.)

My Uberti '62 Pocket Police also deploys the loading latch lug on a regular basis. It's been peened, had red lok-tite applied and been cussed at no end. When it falls off, it invariably does it when I'm shooting in pea-gravel.

I replaced the nipples on mine with Treso/Ampco Bronze. Unfortunately they won't fit CCI #10's. The CCI #11's fit too good and have to be pinched, which I hate doing. CCI's are the ONLY caps that I can ever find so I'm kinda stuck. Although it's a pretty gun and does shoot nice, I'd love to have a '60 Army so if anybody out there is interested in either a swap or a purchase shoot me a pm.

I enjoy my Uberti 1862 Pocket Police. It is a fun shooter. Fortunately I haven't had any problems with it other than my fat fingers.

Zero problems with my 1862 Uberti Police .36 model. Lockwork is silky smooth, too. Sounds like you got a bad egg, but one that can be fixed. At least it shoots.

The Doc is out now.

For those who have a loose loading latch lug there's a new product out called Rocksett. A industrial adhesive it has a shear strength of 450lbs and handle about 1200*. It's a super, super glue. Great for front sights and other small parts.

Here's my Uberti 62 Police Pocket from Cimarron, Bill's case, Giraffe bone grips by Klamathriverwoodworks.com.

Very nice! Thanks for the Rocksett recommendation. Another adhesive that was recommended to me for this application was LocTite Black Max. Hoping my solder job holds, though.

Foto Joe, I'm lusting after a Pocket Police. I do have an older Pietta 1860 but honestly it's been tweaked and modded and shot a lot, so you may not be happy with it's conditon. However if we can come to an agreement on price, I would be willing to give your Uberti Pocket Police a new home. PM we with the details.

(I tried to PM you about this, but for some reason I'm having issues with sending a PM.)

Strawhat,
You act like I am lazy?
Tried shortening the nipples and then found that a #10 would fit, but the channel and backplate are too narrow to pass the capped nipples. The cylinder won't rotate.
It's too much trouble trying to re-cut the brass and it might weaken it too much.
It's just a $80 (bought new) wallhanger... It looks real.
CVA "You can shoot it".
Yea RIGHT!
I bought a Piettia Police fantasy gun and am happy shooting it!

ZVP Strawhat,
You act like I am lazy?

Clearly not lazy. You seem to take a more circuitous route to get the problem solved. Most of us, when presented with cones that are too long for the revolver would modify the cones before tackling any frame modifications. Your revolver, your choice.

I intended no slight.

Where does one find a Uberti 1862 Pocket Police? I have looked at Texas Jack, Cimarron, Uberti and Dixie and no one has them listed.

Great gun ! The best BP Colt ever made !

Mine (Old Uberti in 4.5") :

I sold a little pin to adjust front sight :

Now it shots well at 25 meters !

French is that the same gun used in the duel that Mark Twian wrote about? In the story he was a second at a French duel.

If you haven't read that story it is worth looking up.
