OK here's the sich. You've got a $3500 budget and you are going to get into the ultimate range target setup that your friends will drool over. We are talking about something you can hit shotgun shell hulls with at 200 yds as well as ram silhouettes at 800 yds. Which rifle, cartridge and optics setup would you pick? Remember its gonna have to walk the dog on whatever your bro shows up with.

Remington 40x in 22 lr.....I am more impressed by a gun that will put 5 shots in a baby aspirin at 50 yards than one that will put 5 in a grapefruit at 500 yards.

I think dvdccr is looking for something more like the a

Noreen Bad News in .338 Lampua. If I ever win the lottery, need a serious optic to go with a serious rifle.

Disclaimer - I fully admit that shooting a .30-06 at white tail deer under 100yards does not qualify me to know what to do with the above rig.

Are ya'll honestly suggesting rimfires for shooting at 800 yards?

I am thinking Savage Benchrest Rifle in .308 or 6.5-284 with Nightforce Optics. The 6BR would be a screamer also, but might not knock over a ram at 800 yards.

Did the OP mean hit a ram at 800 or knock over a ram at 800?

Just my .02,

AR-- 25wssm.jpg already have it :neener: but I spent $700 less,, but blew that on dies, brass, bullets, powder, ect. ect.

K-8 Target Mag in 25WSSM , with a Shepherd V1A 6-18X40 on top ,

Since 800 yards isn't all that far these days you can pick from a lot of different rifles. How about a Sharps in 45-70 or 45-90 with a Lyman style tang peep sight.

Reason, most shooters expect a 800 yard rifle to look like a military style rifle, with expensive optics, chambered in something like the 338 Laupa or 50 BMG. You will blow their mind repeatedly hitting targets out to 1000 yards shooting a 140 year old rifle with a big black powder cartridge at only 1400 fps and using a peep sight. BTW, it's a lot of fun too...

NDM-86 Dragunov in .308 shooting 168gr match ammo. Far more accurate than it should be and looks like the Devil's own rifle.

I'd just take a bit of the $3500 and take my wife out to dinner, as I'm perfectly happy with the guns that I have now...

I NEVER try to, or feel like I have to impress ANYONE, including my friends... AND I can't ever remember seeing my "bros" trying to impress me!

Last new gun one of my "bros" came over and showed me, I wouldn't give 10 bucks for! lol But, he's happy with it, so I'm happy for him!

id take my wife out to dinner, buy her something nice, and butter her up to make sure it wasnt a trap........

then id buy an M1A

Cooper Raptor

Ive posted this before but im really wanting a Cooper Raptor in .308. I think a Zeiss conquest HD 5 will go on top of it

I'm with DM, never had little man's syndrome in life or the range. Never had the need to impress everyone at the range either. I suppose if I had the need, $3,500 wouldn't even come close as I don't think the .gov would sell an Abrahams tanks for that amount.

Setting my .50's on the bench does draw a few looks but I shoot with other .50 owners, so I'm not sure who's they're looking at.
