I'm receiving a UPS Next Day Air package, and while their should be someone there to sign for it, they may be temporarily disposed at one point (like my wife for 5-10 minutes feeding my infant daughter) . Can I just leave a note saying to leave the package at the door (behind an object), which she'll be able to get with 5-10 minutes), and/or even leave an advance signature on the door as a backup. Packages get left in front of doors all the time here and theft is a non-issue. The other option is paying 40 for UPS My Choice Premium (which is actually pretty nice, even the free version which sometimes sends me notices even before companies send tracking info), which allows you to select a 2hr time frame and instructions for the driver (and could be used for other packages).

UPS will leave a call slip if no one is home.
Leaving the package without getting an Adult Signature kinda defeats the purpose of the shipper paying extra for "Adult Signature Required" dontcha think?;)

BTW It's is a violation of Federal law for UPS to leave that package without getting a signature:

§ 478.31 Delivery by common or contract carrier.(d) No common or contract carrier shall knowingly deliver in interstate or foreign commerce any firearm without obtaining written acknowledgement of receipt from the recipient of the package or other container in which there is a firearm: Provided, That this paragraph shall not apply with respect to the return of a firearm to a passenger who places firearms in the carrier's custody for the duration of the trip.

I didn't know if it had an adult signature requirement on it and/or that it's required.

That said the writing of the law would make it seem that if I left advanced instruction with specific release and acknowledged and my signature, they could take it...yeah I know that doesn't count as receipt, but I can be delusional.

Ugh maybe I should just get UPS my choice premium and try and pick a block of time for the delivery....that or find myself suddenly sick and having to stay at home tomorrow. lol

My wife said she and her mom and sis would be going out at some point, so now it's a struggle to get her to set aside a block of time, but even then I have no idea when Next Day Air for a residential area will arrive. Knowing my luck it will be when they're out.

After the first delivery attempt, UPS will leave a notice.
Call the number on the notice and UPS will be happy to reschedule delivery or hold the package for you to pick up.

True, my concern is more from not being able to pick it up Friday (due to not getting home until 7ish and where the package sits and when it arrives), Saturday (do to an event and when I have to leave), or Sunday (I doubt their open). Still I've gotten things before from hubs it shouldn't be an issue (and unlike in NYC I won't have to walk down non-roads to the harbor area of Brooklyn and carry back 30 pounds of stuff).

UPS should leave the package but it's at the discretion of the driver. Note the federal law says they "shall not willingly" leave a firearm but when you ship one, the package cannot be marked in any way to indicate it contains a firearm. How then could the driver knowingly believe it contained a firearm?

If it's shipped properly with adult signature required and UPS does their job properly, it will require a physical delivery with signature.

Anything other than that is blatent violation of UPS Policy as well as unkowing violation of US Code regarding the interstate shipment of firearms.

Problems arise when the shipper tries to save the $4.50 Adult signature required fee that UPS charges and then the $1500 firearm gets propped beside the door and UPS is off the hook having provided the service that the shipper contracted for.

Don

If the package is shipped with adult signature requred in person they will not leave it, even if you (an adult) sign the back of the (second) slip they leave and place it on the door. Some packages they can leave with a signed slip, but not guns.

I just went through this a couple of days ago.

Have your wife sit by the door and feed the baby. :)

I ran some errands she asked me to do on the way home and now that is how it shall be. Though UPS says by 10:30 AM which means it should be easy, she doesn't get her if the baby is napping she is napping nap. lol

I've missed ups shipments and gone to the main hub to pick things up a few days later. It's not that big a deal.

Since it is a violation of federal law to mark the package in any way to indicate that it contains a firearm, how does the driver know what is in the package?

Also, most UPS drivers I've seen are adults, right. ;)

Not that any driver would sign their customer's name or anything. :scrutiny:

Wound up having to drive home and drop something I left in the car (no not a gun lol) so I was there to sign, so all worked or well!
