U.S. naval forces say they've captured five pirates after exchanging fire with them, sinking their skiff and confiscating a mother ship.

The USS Nicholas came under fire early Thursday from pirates in an area west of the Seychelles.

The U.S. Africa Command said the five pirates seized would remain in U.S. custody on board the frigate for time time being. The Nicholas is home-ported in Norfolk, Va.

International naval forces have stepped up their enforcement of the waters off East Africa in an effort to thwart a growing pirate trade.

Experts say piracy will continue to be a problem until an effective government is established on Somalia's lawless shores. The country has not had a functioning government for 19 years.

SO, a bunch of idjits in a rubber boat attack a U.S. missile cruiser and live to tell about it?

What the heck?
Is the navy suffering from the ammo shortage like everyone else or what?

Captured my azz!
Smoke'm with the Phalanx gun.

Boise has a good number of Somali refugees. Nice people, insofar as I've been able to interact. Many don't speak any English, and I don't speak Somali or Arabic. They wear some of the most beautiful clothing, and some sell produce at the downtown Farmer's Market. It's really good.

I can only feel sad for their country and countrymen.

Sometimes when I feel stressed out by running errands, I see some Somali refugees in the huge, nice local grocery store with endless variety and good prices, and I think, "Man, what was it like the first time they walked into WinCo Foods? They must have been totally amazed. God we're lucky, just to live here." I feel better immediately, because I GET to run errands around town.

The brig on the USS Nicholas might be one of the nicest places these poor bastards have ever seen.

We need to come down on pirates. Past US military efforts in Somalia didn't help the place any, so "nation-building" doesn't seem viable. However, I think that something has to change in the longer term, if Somalia is to be anything but a den of murderous pirates and utterly poor people.

Now consider this... How much better is the government of Mexico? Mexico has petroleum, but otherwise, would it be Somalia? It hasn't had a functioning government to speak of, for generations.

Yeah! Didn't they used to hang pirates on the high seas?

Whatever happened to tradition?

I'm sure they gave them a stern talking to, and the pirates know now to never do it again
So what will it take to start blowing up pirates? Will they have to blow up a ship or kill some servicemen? Or are we just assuming that this will go away by itself somehow.

Okay, I kinda understand the "pirate" thing ... no functioning government, promise of big reward, etc., ... but who goes after a Navy frigate?
