Sako .222 Mag. I updated the old Redfield Golden Five Star 6-18 with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20 fine cross hair dot reticle when they went on sale (closeouts). Had a .222, but sold it.

Savage target action, 22-250 Shilen 1/8”, Mcree chassis. It loves 80 g Berger VLDS at 3150. A true 1/4 minute gun.

My current is a 24" barreled Weatherby Vanguard which I put a Timney 2# trigger in and pillar bedded it. I got a Busnell Elite Tactical 5-15x scope on cheap and put it in Game Reaper one piece mounts. The mono pod was pricey but sure handy with the adjustable Harris bipod. I have several hundred rounds of Winchester white box 45 grain 4000 fps factory ammo so I sighted it in for that at 200 yards where it turns in just over an inch groups using the bi and monopod . It weights about 8.25 pounds all up so it is portable from where I carry it in the truck . Shot jack rabbits and ground squirrels only so far, finished it last early summer.

I don't hunt anymore but this would be a good rig if you don't mind the weight. .223 Howa 1500 HB with 4-12x scope. 1 MOA.

Chet Brown built me this in early 80s: a 700 BDL with his stock and a Shilen 24" 1-10 twist .22-250 Ackley Improved barrel. I shot is enough that it went from less than .5" at 100 yards to about 3/4" at 100 yards , about 2000 rounds +- and gave it to a son who still uses it. He put a 6-24 Bushnell 4200. on it about 10 years ago. It was my go to Varmint rig and is pretty light- under 8 pounds all up.

I only shoot varmint from my front porch. I've seen only one yote in the 5 years I've lived there. Ground hogs and armadillos are my usual forte, hence this little dandy. A Mini 14 with varmint loads. Laugh it you wish but I've never missed with it out to 100 yards. I do have a different scope on it now

Discussions of varmint rigs always get my attention because it's one of my favorite hunting sports. For starters here are a couple rifles that have been wicked in prairie dog communities: Top is a switch barrel .204 Ruger built on Stolle action, Shilen barrel with laminated stock by Fred Wenig. Bottom is a .22/250 built by Kenny Jarrett on Stolle action, Jarrett barrel on McMillan stock with NightForce 12-42X scope. Both are left bolt operation, which makes them even more deadly efficient for right handed shooters.. DSC_0161.JPG

Call me old fashioned, but despite more recent developments I still consider the .220 Swift the king of varmint cartridges. These two Swifts are long time veterans of the prairie dog and woodchuck wars and still wear the crown. Top is a Swift made by Dakota on left bolt action, scope is 6-24X Swarovski. The other Swift was made many years ago by Ed Shilen on his DGA action and a spectacular piece of wood. It's now fitted with the 2nd or 3rd barrel, I forget which, and the Buehler mounts are a clue to its age. DSC_0178.JPG DSC_0174.JPG

2-DSC_9139B.jpg Top rifle is a 6mm/284 on a Mauser VZ24 action . Middle rifle is a 22 Cheetah on a 1909 Argentine action .Bottom rifle is a 223 Rem. Howa barreled action . I built the top two rifles in the mid 90's and put together the bottom rifle in the early the 2000's . All three have Tasco variable power scopes . All three have seen a lot of use on ground hogs and the CHeetah is on its second barrel .

1-DSC_9139A.jpg My first post is my first post and I couldn't get my descriptions of rifles in sync with pictures .This is a 243 on a Yugo 48 action , barrel has 1 in 12 twist . I hope to have it done in the next few weeks and have loads worked up by the time groundhogs start coming out of their holes .
