I just stopped at the Viroqua Wal-Mart, and came away with 7 boxes of 200 grain .35 Remington softpoint at $5 a box!:D Apparently they have a hard time selling the 200's...

Walmart does weird stuff with their clearances. Grab it all, while you can, because they might very well have it at full retail in a couple weeks.

I picked up ~10 boxes of Winchester Silvertip .40, for $7/box, just that way, 3 years ago.

My Wal Mart just had a huge clearance on ammo. I got 12 boxes of .44 Mag Winchester Platinum Tips for $11.00 per box. I got 8 boxes of Winchester Super X .243 for $5.00 each. 11 Boxes of Federal Premium 30'06 Noslers for $9.00 each. 7 boxes of Federal Premium .270 for $7.00 each. And the best deal, ok, prepare for this one.............. 1,000 rds. of Federal Power-Shok .223 HP for $115.00 after sales tax. Needless to say, they dont have too much ammo left after my purchases.

I always walk by the gun counter at Wal-mart just for that reason. I picked up a couple of the 100 round .45 ACP boxes for about $20 each. Not a steal, but much cheaper than retail these days. That is the only reason I don't like Academy these days is that they do not put ammo on sale.

in the last two week have purchased 100rds of 45 for $20.98, $17, and $7....when the have a sale they price it to move...

Oh I did, when he asked how many I wanted all I could reply was, "How many do you have?" :D

When I need ammo I need ammo, I much prefer Academy's regular low prices to the randomness of Walmart's sales. I always check the Walmart ammo counter when my wife drags me in there to carry home the cat litter stockpile (about once a month :( ), and its pretty rare to find ammo cheaper than at Academy, I buy it when I do, but I learned long ago its not worth a trip to Walmart only for ammo.

OTOH I'm sure some Academy locations may not be well stocked with ammo just as I'm sure some Walmart locations may be great for ammo. But for the Academy and Walmart stores convienent for me, Academy blows them away in for ammo.

I got 3 boxes of 300wby mag at walmart the other day for 19.00 a box and was very pleased to bad they didnt have more. Id rather have my own stock than buy when i need it.

Academy is a chain of sporting goods stores down here on the Gulf Coast. There are several stores in Houston and in Beaumont and Lake Jackson. I don't know how far they spread. I hear about stores on this site that I haven't heard of on a regular basis. Wal-Mart seems to be one of the few truly national chains.

That being said, Academy has a better gun selection and ammo selection than WalMart and it is set up where you can see it better. They just rarely put ammo on sale and normally it is just a little higher than I can get elsewhere. Their prices on rifles and pistols are not too bad though. Typical mark up but not overpriced.

My Wal-Mart ammo deals- 6 boxes 22 Hornet for 11.00 each
2 boxes 223 SSM for 9.00 each
2 boxes 35 rem for 5.00 each
2 boxes 22-250 for 7.00 each
4 boxes 243 win SSM for 9.00 each
4 boxes 30-06 Federal Nosler 9.00 each

Not rifle ammo, but I got a steal on UMC 38 special +p JHP - $9 for a box of 100. Unfortunately they only had 2 left.

Can someone explain to me why a box of 20 Remington 55gr .223 (green/white box) is $5.70, but a "Value Pak" box of 40 rounds of Remington 55gr .223 (green/white box) is $13.50?

I might add that the "manager" they finally dug up to open the cabinet, had severe difficulties figuring out how to open a lock. Then discovered the concept of sliding doors on a cabinet, and how they move out of the way so you can get to things behind them. And then dropped a box of .45 ACP WWB twice on the floor while trying to remove it from the shelf. And then took another minute or two to figure out how to re-lock a cabinet with a simple sliding lock, without dropping it on the floor. I won't mention my foolish query as to the pricing screwup on the .223 ("Wha? It cost thirteen dollar. Cuz it says it on shelf." "Can you please ring it up to make sure?" "It cost thirteen dollar, it say it on shelf." "Yes, but what if it's in the wrong spot on the shelf?" "Oooooh, yaaa, you could be right!")

And they ask ME for ID? Seriously!?

The "value pack" .223 around here for $13.50ish is a 50gr HP, where as the $4.27 box of 20 is 55gr FMJ. I would say the different bullets would be where the difference comes from.

Two of my local WalMarts are doing the same thing - closing out the slow sellers at very low prices. I myself picked up some 9mm CCI Blazer (average at best through my CZ75) and some cheap cheap cheap Remington Long Range .410 ammo. Also up on the block were all the WSM cartridges, 300 WinMag, and a few other slow movers. Last time I was in, 300 WinMag was gone.

My wally world deal

about a year ago I bought a scope for $5.00 that was marked down from $159.00. :)

Yeah, it's great to catch that when it happens. Right now one of my WalMarts has completely emptied its firearms, and is in the process of emptying the fishing stuff; right now the reels are all about $10-15 off, but the clerk said he suspects since they haven't moved in a month or so, they're about to drop down to outrageous prices... as in $5 on a $65 reel, etc. If and when that happens, I'm buying ALL of them!

Maybe we could talk to the mods about having a stickied thread somewhere to post info about places having clearances on ammo and other such things.
