So I just got back from the local wal-mart by my work where I picked up about 120 rounds of .223. Nothing fancy, just the cheap box of ammo. When I first got my AR and started buying ammo for it the cheap box was about $6.47 a box of 20 rounds. About a month ago it went up to $7.50ish and today it was $8.60ish. Is there any sign of this stopping at a price or even maybe going down? Or is it like gas prices and just going to be going up more than it will ever go down?

This is called INFLATION. Contrary the selective reports that the government provides telling us there is low inflation, it is pretty darn high.

Gas, Ammo, Food, Services, Medical insurance. . it is all high. Yes, the price of a TV has gone down and the gov. uses this to skew the numbers, but I buy a TV about once every 4-8 years. I buy everything else which is going up on a daily/weekly basis.

Sorry for the rant.

As long as copper & lead continue to go crazy on the world market there is no end in sight.

Blame China and other developing nations for buying it up faster then it can be mined out of the ground!

Or blame the war in Iraq! for using boatloads of ammo!

Or blame raising fuel prices to smelt it & haul it.

Or blame any number of other things.

It was known over two years ago it was coming and it's not going to get any better.

Doesn't matter where you go, buy it cheap, stack it deep, and conserve.

Ammo prices may come down somewhat, eventually, but I wouldn't bank on it.

"is it like gas prices and just going to be going up more than it will ever go down?" You got it. So stock up as much as you can afford and limit your consumption at the range. Practice with .22 LR and buy lots of those bulk packs of it.

Way too late to buy it cheap--that would have been good advice two or three years ago.

The other two components are still good advice.

a buddy of mine and I were joking about this thread at work tonight he said "I use to carry to protect my wallet now I feel I should carry to protect my spare magazine" Of course the mugger who want you to "hand over all your ammo" is really in a bad position to begin with.

I actually wonder if you had the room and extra cash (I hear myths about people who have extra cash and dont spend it on guns, cars or women) it might be a cool idea to buy large amounts of ammo and keep it dry for later resale. Of course like all good investment ideas it would have been a better idea 2yrs ago.

Back on topic, yea I hate the price of .40S&W right now.

kd7nqb: Funny you should mention that; there was a discussion on THR a while ago about the idea of buying ammunition as an investment. I recall that the consensus was that it was a bad idea.

In retrospect, though, I have to wonder...

Well . . . . after reading the following blog posting:-
http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2008/03/live_from_dearb.html

I have decided to boycott Wallyworld and will not buy ANYTHING from them in the future . . . including WWB.
If I have to pay more for practice 9mm ammo, so be it.

This is my small contribution and showing my disgust at their immoral business practice and collusion with radicals. I am fully aware that my individual decision will be of no consequence to their bottom line profit margin, but if enough individuals get angry enough and join in the boycott, I will feel immensely satisfied.

Don't blaim china. It is the Bush weak dollar policy that is putting the US down the toilet.

+1 - but I blame the Fed as they are supposed to be an independant agency. All of us are paying for the bail outs of the banks, insurers, for the sub-prime housing mess. Printing money aka 1944 Germany.

Now they are talking about bailing out the 'little guys' who bit off more mortgage than they can chew.

Listen to Glen Beck - he seems to have it spot on.

Where is my bail out for the pension that Klinton and Bush let my company steal from me (by signing a couple of executive orders)?

chupacabra. . . . . . . personally I dont have a problem with any store stocking products to cater to a specific ethnic group. I like a varety of food, and will experiment with most anything and I will often explore exotic food stores.

HOWEVER, what I have a real problem with, is Walmart's total double standard in pandering to radical muslims by not competing with them:-
it will not undercut the prices of the small local merchants (though it will still go after Kroger).
. . . why should these businesses get special treatment while traditional American mom and pop stores throughout the USA were purposefully stomped on and driven out of business?
AND . . sensitivit training? . . .. . do they give sensitivity training to their employees in San Fancisco to cater to a large Chinese community? or to employees in Los Angeles to cater to a large Hispanic community?

It all boils down to double standards and pandering to a minority pressure group that resufes to assimilate into the American culture

Legal Alien, I tried to read that article and could only get 1/2 way through it as it seemed to me to be way over the top. It seems she has a real problem with Muslims. It seemed to me that she is spouting the same hateful junk that the Islamic radicals spout, just from the white Christian, soccer mom point. Perhaps I am just naive or have my head in the sand, but until someone attacks me I don't have a real problem. I understand 911, and I take that very personally but as far as I can see muslims in this country (for the most part) aren't any more of a threat to us than the home grown left wing/right wing fanatics.

Sorry to go off topic, I was in Walmart last night, WWB 9mm 13.86 per 100 and Remington 240 JHP .44 mag 32.96 for 50, .45 ACP Remington, 29.96 100.

you shouldn't be buying ammo from walmart to begin with. they are anti-gun.

Only place open late at night. I work and then when I get home need to watch my baby till I put her down for bed and thats the only time I have to go shopping. The mom and pop gun shops around where I live close before I even get off work.

And if their so anti-gun why do they still sell ammo and in other states still sell guns?

by the end of 2009 they won't. it's a gradual phase out. try carrying your weapon into a walmart. conceal it, but leave an obvious imprint. They also pay money out in donations to the brady campaign.

Cites?

By the way...if you're leaving an obvious imprint then you're not really concealing.

+1. That and freaking out/pissing off wal-mart employee's is something I did for fun in high school.

+1,000,000

I had a problem with that article, too. It made me want to wash my eyes and my brain out with bleach.
