Wal-Mart limiting ammo now?

Question: "How long does properly stored ammo last? "

Answer: If kept relatively cool and dry, longer than most of us will live to use it.

Well, I must admit to recently buying as much handgun ammo as practical when either of our local Wally Worlds has it on the shelves. The primary reasons being it's less there than anywhere else locally and we've had students out lately who could not readily find ammo to use in CHL qualifications or Handguns 101 classes. I got "lucky" today and caught the I-35 store right after a shipment. Got 13 9mm value packs and 3 .38 Spec. value packs for our training guns. Plus the only box of .357Sig that was left on the shelf - "just in case" for the poor (or rich!) guy who shoots that caliber and can't find any of it locally either! With tax, a smooth $400.00 ...

No .380, .40 or .45 to be had there today, but if so, I would have likely got a few of those too.

Here is something to think about, I posted it in another thread a while back, but it seems to be more and more of a curiosity with each passing week...

"I think there is probably a little more to this supply issue. There is NO WAY that we as a whole are buying it faster than they can make it. Personally I think that production and importation is being slowed and intentionally held back to prolong this whole "panic" and keep the prices high. Think about it, everyone is sold out, taking back orders....this can only serve to make us believe we MUST buy more as soon as we can find it. Have you ever seen a munitions plant? There's one near my home, Federal. This place supplied the military through many wars before it became Federal. There is absolutely no way we are buying it faster than our military blew it off in WWII,Korea,Nam......"

For those that advocate rationing ammo don't worry it's coming soon enough. I have a reasonable supply on hand but I buy what I use most anytime I find some at a decent price. Been doing it for years. I've never been completely out of ammo of any caliber and don't plan to be. Kinda like you never want to run out of gas in your car. There's still enough to go around out there but maybe not at the closest or cheapest store in your area. Everyone knows there is a very likely possibility guns and supplies will be restricted with our new socialist (almost communist)government in the near future hence the panic buying going on now. That's no reason to snipe each other here about who has all the ammo and boo hoo I ain't got enough. Just be aware of the circumstances we are facing and deal with the shortages without bitching about it. If you think it's bad now, hang on. It's likely to get much worse.

"" If Walmart has ammo on the shelf . . . . .

. . . . it may elevate some of the panic buying." Say again?? What's the diff between NO AMMO and ONLY GONNA SELL YOU (X) BOXES? Either one sets off a Zombie Awareness Alert. But still the prices are 50% to 100% higher than I bought 2 yrs ago. I have a lot. But can't decide whether I should cash it all out, or stay prepared for Zombies. When B.Hussein Obama ends the war, there'll be plenty of bullets to buy then. About Wally: "'...they're un-American." In case you haven't checked labels lately, Wally really IS Un-American.....or at least "NON-American." But that's capitalism for you. Who'll howl if suddenly The Zombie Leaders enforce "One Gun Per Month" laws?? Same logic, "So everyone will have a chance to buy one" Say WHAT!?

Define "SAFETY"

"Since it's not limiting purchases for safety reasons, I think it's fine." How close to a ghetto do I have to live before I consider myself to be "UNSAFE", by your logic?

Here's the pictures I took with my phone earlier just for S&Gs. I was lucky enough to find one store with .45 today. I grabbed my 2 boxes :) Also, it's interesting to note the date on the e-mail....

This is such an elementary situation. ECON101: Introduction to Microeconomics. Demand is too high. Therefore, the price is too low. The price should be raised. Supply will then increase. Eventually demand will ease. Then the price will be too high. The price should then decrease. Doesn't anyone else know this stuff anymore?
I do! But, please don't tell anyone else. :)

Walmart is not the only place to buy ammo.
I shop there often and if they have it fine, if not I'll get it somewhere else.

If people want to freak out and run up 3 credit cards to resell it all to some other idiot running out all of his so freakin what.

Ammo shortage?? People are just lazy and won't even take the effort to look around a little bit.

I stocked up long ago but still buy ammo when I find good deals.

This will all swing the the other way soon enough.

What's special about ammo? I work in a grocery store. We put stuff on sale all the time with a limit on how many a customer can buy. I suppose that's part of a plot to limit the availability of Pepsi-Cola?

I haven't bought ammo from Wal-Mart in a while. I'm pretty set on all of my centerfire cartridges (.30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 9mm, and 45 ACP). I'd like to get a bunch more .22lr, though. I go through .22's like a rabbit goes through carrots :D

WallyWorld is certainly limiting ammo in my neck of the woods ... to the point where they don't have any ammo at all. I have not been able to get any Winchester White Box 9mm for 9 weeks and counting at three Walmart stores locally. They continue to say that supplies are tight and that every time an order comes in, someone standing nearby buys up entire cases of it and takes it away before anyone else has a chance at it.

I for one would welcome a limit on ammo per customer. It might just give me a fighting chance to take something to the range these days besides a half-dozen .22 autos.

"How long does properly stored ammo last?"

Still using up boxes of Remington .38 S&W that my dad left with his 1905 era Model 4 .38 break top 5 shooter. The Gun is over 100 years old, and the ammo is at least 40 years old.

5 boxes left with his 2 pistols...fired 3 boxes through the Smith and Wesson and 2 boxes, with their $4.95 price tag still left.

IMO, the solution to the shortage would be to raise prices.

Walmart should have raised prices

I sell brass, and had a pretty good run on it ran out at one point. I raised prices (a lot :) ), still selling it, but not in danger of running out.

You guys made me curious, so on the way home last night, I hit the local walmart. Shelves looked about like Gunsafes picture. They did have shelves FULL of both the Remington and Winchester 100 round 7 1/2 & 8 shot skeet/sport loads though

The Cabelas 10 minutes away however has PLENTY of ammo except the bulk pack stuff.

I really am beginning to sense a bit of a conspiracy. I don't care how much we are buying, there is absolutely no way possible that we are buying it up faster than we shot it off in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Etc......We had little to no problem producing it then. I suspect someone somewhere of creating this shortage intentionally for whatever reason. Not gonna openly speculate what reason, but we all know who I'm talking about and what reason I suspect.

I agree. I suspect that if retailers doubled the price of 9mm and 45 ACP, they would sell just as much."

So, let me get this straight. You both want to pay twice as much, and think retailers should let you. GREAT!!! I've got some ammo I'll sell you. PM me for more info!!!

Wal-mart is certainly free as a corporation to do as they like. Doesn't mean I have to like their business practices, including limiting the number of boxes of ammunition that people are allowed to buy, but they are free to do so. As consumers, we are also free to vote with our feet and not shop there. I do like WWB. If they have it in my calibers, I buy it. If not...well, I've got enough on hand not to worry too much, and there are other sources out there.

Yes that is correct. It is called the free market system. If demand is high, and supply is low, price should increase, which will ultimately lower demand and stabilize the market.

I don't need to buy your ammo. I saw this coming about 2 years ago, and stocked up on everything I will need for a long long time. I also reload.

I am about to hit the range and shoot up some of my $6 a box 9mm.

Nope

I wasn't buying it before the "shortage".

Me and my Dillon 650 have been getting along just fine.
