Walmart ammo, Deal or no deal?

No Blazer brass at my Walmart. The best deal they have is WWB for $15.76 per 100 of 9mm. Sportmans Warehouse has Ultimax for $7.99 per 50 (no thanks) and a local store has Magtech for $7.99 per as well.
So, Walmart comes out a little ahead. I have 2100 rnds of the WWB stocked up right now and I just bought 500 rnds of Miwall reloads at the Funshow last weekend.

I have to say the CCI Blazer Brass .45's are the cleanest ammo I have shot so far. The cases are shiny even before I tumble them, unlike WWB which have black soot coating them.

Of course, I am reloading .45 ACP 230grain for $6.50 a box using Rainiers or $4.50 a box using lead...

Local Wally's have decent prices on common stuff (9, 45, etc.) but
I've been stocking up on the .22's also.
I prefer the Federal stuff over the others.

Academy Sporting Goods had the best price on 9mm around here at 6.99 for 50. I went through the Midwayusa on line catalog and they had nothing to come close to that price. I havent come up with any concrete figures yet but reloading 6.99 9mm cost more.

I buy almost all my ammo from Walmart, sometimes a few boxes from gun shows if its something that I have not tried before. If I can find a deal somewhere else because its on sale, I would buy it from there too, but Walmart is consistantly the cheapest. For defense loads, I might have to go to Gander Mountain or a specialized gun shop, but thats fairly rare that I shot those.

I just ran 100 rounds of WalMart blazer brass through my new SA XD.40 with no problems. I pay $7.47 box of 50 blazer brass .40S&W at WalMart on Spring Creek & 75 in Plano Texas. I picked up 22 boxes. Their .45acp is $9.49 per box of 50. These are the cheapest I've seen around these parts.

Wally World is the cheapest in my area for .45 ACP practice hardball. I buy all my Blazer Brass there, 500-1,000 rounds at a time. If I'm going to gun school, I call ahead so they'll have 2,000-3,000 or whatever the class requires put aside for me. Of course, if I'm going to Front Sight (I have a membership) I just call up the Wal-Mart in Pahrump and pick up my ammo when I get there.

All of the ammo-counter guys around here are shooters. The only problem I ever have there is wasting way too much time talking to them about gun stuff.

Ok, I went to wally world yesterday and bought some ammo. The clerks (three of them) told me I had better stock up cause the price of all ammo was going to double in January. While one of them hedged on what they were saying by telling me he didn't know the exact date, he swore it was true.

I buy most of my ammo at Walmart and I noticed that the prices definitely jumped a good 10-20% in the last month. By the way, the WWB and Blazer Brass and UMC all shoot fine out of all my semi autos.

Reloading is definitely cheaper, but its a matter of whether or not you have the time to do that........maybe when I am retired.

the problem with wal-mart is the selection. they might have a place for it on the shelf and the price is lower than everywhere else but they are also out of it at every store in over a 100 mile radius. I buy .223 from wal-mart and it just went up in price but its still the cheapest at wal-mart.

It's not really a deal per se, but it is better than anywhere else. What's great is when Wal-mart has sales for their ammo. Last time came out to $12.50 for 100 rd WWB value packs of 9mm.

They even had Blazer Brass for $9/50 of .45 ACP!

But, I can't disclose which Wal-Mart usually has that.

Back in September, the Winchester or Remington 100 rd Value Packs of 12 ga trap loads were $16.97 at WalMart. In October, the Remington went up to $19.44, a 14% increase. Today I noticed that the Winchester is $23.88, that's a 41% increase over September.

Winchester handgun ammo is still the same, for example the 100 rd Value Pack of WWB 9mm ball is still under $16. But just wait...

Gearhead Jim, I noticed that as well and wondered just how much "metal" was in those. It's mostly cheap plastic (hull), and stamped metal in it's base. Taken to the extreme... it calculates as follows:
7/8oz lead per shell
100 shells per $23.88
87.5oz (5.47lb) of lead per $23.88

That's $4.37 per pound of lead! Of course, my basic calculations didn't adjust for the plastic and primer in the shot nor did it allocate for sales tax on the finished product.

Lead is showing to be trading at $1.20/lb currently on the LME/COMEX/NYMEX.

The 12 ga shells contain 1 1/8 oz of shot, so that would change the numbers somewhat. Regardless, it's a huge increase. The only part that wouldn't apply to metallic cartridges is the plastic hull of a shotgun shell, but the brass for pistol & rifle cases has gone up a bunch also.

ammo

I buy mine from DICK'S remington umc for practice and federal hydrashocks for carry. You get a better price buying by the case.

I did a price comparison a few days ago between WallyWorld and Bass Pro. WalMart Blazer is the best deal by far.

I bought out 3 Walmarts nearby of all their ammo in .40 for Blazer Brass. Since I do a lot of travel, I should be able to stop by a few of them again in a week or so and get some more. But I'll probably start getting more WWB if I can't get Blazer.

I buy all pistol ammo (9mm and .38 special) at walmart and get great deals. Rifle ammo, shotgun shells (other than practice birdshot) I usually support my local gun store.

WARNING: OVERSTAFFED OLD-GUY EMPLOYEE GUN STORE GOSSIP/RUMORS AHEAD:

Supposedly, if brands like Winchester White Box get really old or get wet they sell them off to WalMart and this is one of the reasons the prices are so low...

...I don't believe it for a minute but correct me if I'm wrong.

I know I probably miss out by not checking Walmart, but I only buy from their sporting goods department when its a urgent late night run for a forgetten item that is needed for the next days adventure. I make a geniune effort to do my business at my local Hunting/Fishing shop. I do sometimes pay a little more on certain things, but the guys there make it up by giving me promo items, discounts on trivial things that don't sell well, and by calling the house when they come by something they know I'd like. They recently opened a Gander Mountain in my area. I was initially interested in having such a large sporting goods store that actually seemed to carry hunting and fishing gear, since most of the larger sporting stores here (Dick's and SportMart) focus more on team sports, camping, canoeing, golf, and such. After several trips and dissappointment at not finding anymore than a 5% saving on anything that I use...I haven't even bothered darkening their door with my presence. I'm sure ammo goes on sale there, and I'm sure I'd save a couple hundred a year if I'd wait catch it on sale and buy in bulk. I think I really just like my bi-weekly visits to the shop to pick up the ammo I need and check out the seasonal fishing gear.
