Was at wally world yesterday and saw 00 buck in the ammo case. Girl comes over with the key and we both notice signs on ammo case "no ammo sales at this time. "

Even the boxes of shells that are out on shelves say they cannot be purchased.

What gives??

ETA: Walmart in glen ellyn IL, a western suburb of chicago.

Maybe they have decided that ammunition is not an 'essential' item, like some stuff at other places...

Not sure its a state issue. To much surprise, the governor listed gun shops as essential right out of the gate during the stay at home order.

Id guess its a Walmart problem or the fact you are all the way up there. Then again, im about 350 miles south of you.

Maybe they don't want to waste room on a truck with ammo when they can jam pack that space with products more customers will want, and maybe they don't want to spare employees from stocking shelves of those same products.

They probably realized manning their sporting goods desk was a waste of money right now.

I doubt this is a political thing, but rather a manpower and business decision. They've already made it clear that their shooting customers are not a priority, so why is this surprising?

this happened in Bellingham a few times. The assistant manager push the paperwork to ZMS, the ZMS can't do it, the store manager has to, and he/she didn't feel like it, pushed it to the assistant managers, who push it to the ZSM, who bring it to the store manager..... 4 months of this, and their FFL expires. I know of three times this cycle ran at 1 Walmart. Same reason you see damage to the building, or parking lot take years, or a customer injury to get fixed.

Could very well be a city/county thing, thinking it will reduce the risk of violent crimes, and ease the burden on the local LEOs during this whole pandemic thing. Haven't heard of this anywhere else....yet.

Friend of mine runs a small Bait Shop/Sporting Goods store here in Wisconsin. When the first "closure" was applied to non-essential business, he applied to stay open and was told he was not an essential business. Last week when the Governor extended the closure another month he reapplied and was told he could open since he was and essential business. The difference? First time he applied he didn't think to state he sold ammo. Second time he did and that was the determining factor.

went to my local WM in Lawrence, KS the other day to buy some .380 ammo. Was reminded that they made the decision a few months ago to stop selling pistol ammo. I had forgotten. One wonders why, since some guy with bad intent is not likely to change his mind when faced with that policy. The clerk said, "Well the guy who made that policy got fired so maybe the policy will change."

I'd be interested to find out what the reason is.
If I understand the OP, the ammo is in the display case but cannot be sold.

Let's keep to that specific topic, this thread isn't a general invitation to bash Walmart.

Your ACE sells ammo?!?!?!?!?

Yup, lots of ammo, with a limited number of firearms as well. The next time I pass through I should take a few pics, shooters back east might find it amusing, but here it isn't uncommon ...this one is just a bigger store with a bigger supply and two owners who are big in the shooting sports.

Hey, I’d LOVE to see my local ACE Hardware reinvent itself into an old “”Western Auto” store! I used to buy ALL my fishing gear, bike tubes, etc. at a Western Auto hardware store!

It is not a company wide thing at Walmart.
And, yes my hometown ACE is my LGS. I may work at Walmart, but I buy most of my guns and gun stuff at the ACE. I do buy ammo at work, when I buy factory ammo.

No such trouble at wally world out here in mchenry/richmond, IL. I didn't buy anything but they are selling it as of a couple days ago.

Haven't been to a Walmart in over a year, but when I use to go there, they never did actually "man the sporting goods desk". You had to go searching for someone, who then had to go searching for someone else who had the keys. ;)

They actually man it most of the time I’m there. But that’s always Saturdays.
