Dear THR:
Would like to know what sort of weapons do you keep in your bedroom at night? Please also discuss why you keep what you keep, and your threat level. I keep an AKS74U and H&K P30 with M6 combo nearby. Unless the threat level is elavated this is routine.

A secondary question is whether you had ever discharge a weapons in self defense in the boundry walls of your house at a hostile intruder? If so, please describe the circumstances and the legal issues that followed.

Thanks.

What's AROUND the bedroom is more important than what's IN the bedroom IMHO. There are two layers of fences and gates, plus two doors, motion activated lighting, IR sensors, a security system and three dogs between the bedroom and the outside world.

There's the J frame I carry every day and an 870 inside the bedroom, but so far - for some reason - I've not had cause to reach for them.

Threat level? We live in a relatively poor rural county with an outsized drug problem that is known as the most violent county per capita in the state.

Hi-point c9 and cf380. Both with Corbon powrball. These run just fine.
Nagant revolver loaded with 32 h&r magnum.

20 gauge mossberg youth with #4 turkey loads.

Bedroom Defense

ADT Alarm System
106lbs of Teeth and Chocolate Fur
His and Hers Charged Cell Phones
His and Hers 5 Cell Flash Lights
His and Hers Firearms Within Reach

Wife had a situation several years back (1991)with someone coming in the house from the woods( We always figured) while she was
watering some plants outside. I was not there ,Just her and our 18 Month Old Boy with No Dogs.
She heard a sound down the hall after they had went to bed . She Let the Individual Hear her Cock her S&W Model 19 and Said "I HAve A Gun And You Are Dead If You Come In Here"
The Individual took out a front bedroom Widow and Frame getting away from her.

I have a bolted down safe near the bed. At night it is unlocked and open and inside are a pistol, a quality flashlight, and a set of electronic earmuffs.

Home security comes in layers

Layer one - Slightly nosy neighbors, including an older retired lady who doesn't sleep much. Well maintained lawn and shrubs. Outdoor floodlighting on motion detectors. 4.5 ft chain link fence around property perimeter.

Layer two - reasonably hardened entry points, intrusion alarms, and a large, alert, dog.

Layer three - Communication code words, Firearms, phones, and "fire drill" rehearsals and variations-on-a-plan discussions so we each know what to do and what the other person will do.

Plan "B" - Traditional Marine Corps K-Bar (really weak on the knife training though so I'd hate to use it), 5 ft oak hiking staff, Magcharger, fire extinguisher, a win-at-all-costs attitude, and multiple exit strategies.

you are never going to get an answer to that one on an open forum.

As is often the case, Fred hits it. Layered security; good neighbors; low-speed/low-risk lifestyle with a small sprinkling of 3" 65-3 RB with a couple extra loaders of 145-gr silvertip, some electronic muffs, a cell phone/charger and a surefire aviator on top. Plus lots of good reading material; the book you don't read won't help you avoid trouble.

:)

The bedrooms is where the gun safe is, but not all guns are in there. Closets in the hallway hold a shotgun and pistol. Wife's nightstand holds a Ruger P95. My nightstand holds a Taurus Tracker .44Magnum. Se keeps a .30-.30 loaded with 170 grain cast bullets.

Bedroom;
PS90 w/ 50 round magazine
Glock 21 w/ 2 spare 13 round magazines

Glock is go-to piece, it's capable of shooting down through my stairwell and penetrating the 2x12's with force sufficient to mess up someone's day.

PS90 is the fallback piece if there are a lot of bad guys downstairs or my rounds don't seem to stop the aggressor(s). If I think they're wearing body armor it's easier to make headshots with and has GREAT low light optics. Nice and compact for indoor use, and ultra-fast at acquiring targets. :)

(PS90 also gives my wife an easy to use piece to pick up if I get hit and go down)

The stairwell is my Alamo. You're not getting upstairs to my kids. Kids rooms have hardpoints they can get behind sufficient to stop a 12 gauge slug if I yell the phrase for them to do so.

Gun Vault w/3 loaded revolvers.

Mossberg shotgun on occasion.

Layers, as has been noted. Good neighbors who pay attention, motion lighting, locked doors and windows, alarm system, and finally flashlights and guns.

A bad guy reaching my sleeping quarters would face blinding light followed by 14 rounds of 12ga 00 buckshot and 30 rounds of .40cal (165-gr JHPs).

A slight note about gunshots in the house. Two buddies of mine had an ND of a .30-30 inside our apartment. Ears rang, but neither were incapacitated.

Just thought I'd throw that out here...

For me it's whatever I have been shooting the most at any given time. When that is not appropriate it is my charter bulldog .357 with .38spl +p

Colt DS 148gr wadcutters,
Remington 870 2 3/4" #4 shot,
Feel OK with this regardless of threat level. I try to consider overpenetration. If I move to Mogadishu I'll reconsider. Otherwise, I'm good.

mossburg 88 with 6 rounds of 00 and if thats not enough my safe is a step away with a loaded tauras 44mag, 1911, and ak47

HARDENDED house first

Then a set of Glocks at bedside [ G-23 & G-17 ].

Flashlights [ plural ] and a fire extinguisher that would make the hallway to the bedroom IMPASSABLE unless you had an air supply .

I cleard many buildings as LEO and used a pistol 99% of the time,so I am very comfortable with that choice.

IF there were even a remote possibility that it was not a simple case of WRONG HOUSE, dummy = then I would hope to have heard the warnings [ news broadcasters etc ] and removed suitable tools from the safe.

If they get passed the fence, alarm, yapping Shi Tsu, have time to play ball with the lab, and make it to my bedroom...... Their intention is to do harm and will be faced with an XDM .40.

My XD 45 sits on the nightstand beside my bed.

My wife keeps the Ruger GP100 on her nightstand on the other side of the bed.

Motion lights outside................closest neighbor is ~200 feet away. Dog sleeps in the house......golden retriever that would be happy as hell if a stranger was at the door. XD 45 on my night stand & 18" 870 next to the night stand. The wife has a MDm 9 on her night stand and a Mossy 20 ga. "cruiser". The most " excitement" we ever have around here at night is either a mountain lion cruzin thru of a coyote or two.

Motion sensor flood lights, CCTV cameras, gate, locked doors, motion alarm, teeth and fur, 4-D Maglight, short staff, 9mm Ruger, 20 ga w/ 0 buck.

Previous GF "wasn't comfortable and couldn't get in the mood" knowing a gun was within reach at all times. She didn't last long.

Don't have an alarm in this house, but I will be working to change that before too long. Already have motion sensor lights out front and will be installing another out back this spring. Back yard has a 6' fence.
If anyone manages to get into the house, they will have to contend with my four American Bulldogs. They will give me time to grab my Maverick 88, loaded with slugs, and #2 buck on a stock cuff. I have my 9mm as back up. I'd simply plop down at the end of the hall, covering all the bedrooms, using the hallway as a choke point. Nothing is goof to make it through the hall to the bedrooms outside of a SWAT team.

Flashlights [ plural ] and a fire extinguisher

Mr. Lobo brings up an excellent point, as usual. I've never been burgled nor have any family members, but we've had two fires that prompt measures kept from spreading much.
