what .22 do you use for pest control

Queekstaw!

Sorry, used to watch & couldn't help it. :D

I'm pretty rural, therefore the CZ452 American in .22lr gets the nod most of the time.

Qb78 co2 .22 cal pellet gun. My favorite for around the yard.

For Rats and Chicken Snakes in the barn, I use CCI .22 long riffle birdshot in this Model 62sa by ROSSI. I've tried Winchester and Federal, but this works best without jamming. The birdshot will not penetrate the barn, but it will knock a large snake out of the rafters at 14' DRT. Does not work very good on birds unless you are extremely close. I don't like shooting these snakes, but sometimes these old ones seem to lose their ability to kill critters, and take to your chicken flocks. I lost several hens one summer before I decided to pull guard duty on the hen house. Caught two of these guys ganging up on a roost of bantam pullets. Three pullets were already on the ground dead, and one was being strangled, and another was in a snakes mouth. Now that'll mad a chicken owner mighty mad.

Winchester 62A with Aguila Colibri for longer shots, or CCI shot-shells for close up snake control.

The 23" barrel keeps things pretty quite here in town.

Then there is always a brace of Beeman .177 & .22 air-rifles.

Just a thought. I wouldn't shoot a harmless snake (or a poisonous one) for any reason except if it was unavoidable. I like reptiles. Instead I would try to move it to someplace else. Just a thought.

I understand TeaCoffee Guy: I don't like killing for the fun of it, but You weren't here to get this critter for me, so, I had to take matters into my own hands. I bought those chickens out of my own honest hard living, bought material to build the barn, and their nest boxes. Bought food for them out of my own pocket. Paid their water and electric bills. They are completely defenseless, and entirely dependent upon man for their utter existence. So it boils my blood when predators wreck havoc on innocent animals.

Not so for predators. They kill for their housing. They kill for their food, they kill for fun, and they'll kill you if they get a chance. That's my thought. :)

I generally use a scoped 10-22 for small critters. I bump it up to a 22 wmr for anything a little larger. If that doesn't do it, the 30-30 comes out. I live in a rural area, so noise isn't an issue. If my wife had her way, she'd use a 50 bmg on anything that slithers!

Speer makes shot capsuls. I load them for .38 Special, .38 S&W and 44 Special with #8 birdshot. Also rice loads work well for inside shooting. I also have loaded various 12 gauge loads using copper wire, rice and even rocksalt.

I never thought of rice. I wonder how well couscous would work... it's rounder than rice and isn't corrosive like rock salt. How far could you shoot with rice and keep it within reasonable spread?

I hit this crow last Sat at 98 yards with a new .22 air rifle I picked up.

All this guy needed was a single shot from my old Benjamin .22 air pistol, generally what mice get around the shop as well. It is enough for small diameter critters and does not chip the concrete.

For larger animals around the house I have a Remington pump .22 S, L, LR

I too was shocked at the crow hit.

The snake was an easy one, the night before I noticed I had caught a mouse on the sticky trap and figured I would deal with it in the morning. Well the next morning the mouse was inside the Copperhead and he was stuck to the trap. Pretty easy shot at that point.

LOL!!!!

Well, sometimes the truth may not sound as cool but it can still be funny.

Marlin M25 22LR with shortened barrel.
Ruger 10/22 22lr
Stevens 987 22lr with homemade bullpup stock to replace old damaged one.
12 and 20 gauge single barrel break overs with 7.5 shot.

All works great.

A Benjamin Marauder. Great for anything up to about rabbit and crow size out to about 50 yards and I even got a small fox with it at 13 yards. And the best part is its quiet so the fitters don't know what hit them.

Hey samort457: Like your post. Since I don't own a pellet gun, yet I did favor you guys who do have them, simply because of the quiet report they emit so as not to attract attention from fretting neighbors. I searched, and experimented with different .22 cal ammo. Longs, CB's , Shorts... They were quiet in that respect, but I found them difficult to be accurate on a consistent basis. Finally, on a whim I bought a box of expensive Sub-Subsonic ammo. Quiet, and very accurate, but, wow, it was expensive. Then, I found Winchester Sub-Sonic Long Rifle Hollow Points. Man, they performed excellent in comparison to the others. Knock down power on Coyotes within 50 yards (head shot only) is superb, and so quiet it makes you think the gun never fired except that the predator dropped dead in its tracks.

FWIW a CB cap out of a regular .22 makes less noise than the air rifles I have add a suppressor and all you hear is the firing pin click.

Ruger 10-22 rifle with a 3-9x32 scope is what I use. I shoot Remington Subsonics with it and it does amazing on Armadillos out to 50yds. Headshot them and they take a dirt nap.
