Uh, edit it to remove the M43. 7.62x39 is the cartridge. M43 is one of the early (and crappy) projectile designs. Nearly everthing you can buy today is M67.

7.62X 51 Fal R1A1 Rifle
7.62x39 Romanian Ak47

In process now of getting rifles ready for SHTF (hurricane) season.

Edit.

Yeah, good idea on removing the M43 part. I also should probably add .30 Carbine too.

Dumb question: I see where to edit the post. How do I edit the poll? Thanks.

Define SHTF.

If I have to run away from my house on foot, it is .223.

If I'm guarding the house, or I have a car to help transport, it is .308.

What ever happens to be loaded at the moment the SHTF. I don't plan on some daring escape and your going to have to push hard to get me to leave all I have worked for my entire life. I won't leave my family and friends to save my sorry hide so a bug out kit is not high on my list.

However to fort up I have whatever I would need for the occasion:eek:

As of in about a year?

.357 mag / 627
9mm / CZ75 or 85

Presently 7.62x39, but no M43 for me. First off because steelcore is too expensive and second because its performance in soft tissue sucks. I like the effect series just fine, I mostly stock Uly 8m2 but 8m5 and 8m3 are great stuff when you can find it, the latter is probably the most effective commercially available round against soft targets.

7.62x39 has several distinct advantages where I live. The terrain here is built up, be it the city, swamp or woods. LOS is limited to a couple hundred yards, cover and concealment are plentiful. 7.62x39 has the power to punch through walls, car bodies, logs and bust through brush to reach enemies more reliably than lighter calibers such as 5.56x45 or 5.45x39, but it is significantly lighter than the 7.62x51 whose range advantage is not needed in my environment which makes it easier to carry. 7.62x39 has an additional advantage, it is large caliber and relatively low velocity... given the watery nature of a subtropical environment this eliminates much worry about goose egging or blowing up a barrel after getting water in the bore from heavy rain or a bad fording/swim.

For longer range or when I need more penetrating power I have Mosins chambered for 7.62x54r and plenty of steel core. AP and even explosive bullets are available for this cartridge.

I'd really love an AK chambered in 6.8spc or 6.5 Grendel. Throw on a sidefolding stock, lower handguard rail system and a rear sight/rail system such as www.scoutscopes.com sells and I believe it would qualify as a worldbeating HDR.

I definately see a role for an ultralightweight .22 revolving rifle, about the size and weight of a Cricket or Chipmunk but having a 5+ shot capacity and conversion cylinder to go from .22lr to .22mag. You could shoot anything from extremely quiet Super Colibri or CB Caps to potent .22 MaxiMag or other loads which would be a credible threat against man or beast. Such a rifle should have a folding stock for ultimate compactness, the extremely low weight of rifle and ammo would allow one to easily live out of a backpack and not want for ammunition. It seems like NAA could build something like this, or at least provide the cylinders.

Reply.

Very interesting idea on the Ultralight rifle, R127. Might be a nice backpack gun; especially in the .22WMR chambering.

Yeah, forget the M43 part. Guess I hit the submit button before reviewing my post. Can't seem to find a way to correct it.

Thanks.

It depends...

If I have to go on the move I'll take an AR with XM193 5.56 because it's the rifle I practice with the most and can shoot the most accurately with. Plus it's handy, light, shoots light ammo, it's a common caliber here in the US, it shoots pretty much right to POA to 200 yards. I voted for it because no matter where I am, an AR will be with me.

If I had to move in in a vehicle, along with the AR, the AK gets stashed in the vehicle because it's compact with the folding stock (a lesson I've read from reports from Iraq - many soldiers preferred the AK to the M16 inside vehicles).

If I was staying put and defending the homestead (the New Orleans scenario), one of the FALs or my Garand would be the go-to guns. I've got a half dozen mags full of 150gr. TAP. After that, it would be 7.62 NATO. I've got a lot more 7.62x51 on hand than 5.56 and 7.62x39, but I wouldn't want to be humping a FAL with four or five mags very far and those rifles are long and awkward.

I chose .308/7.62x51 for the M1As. I guess it all depends on how much fecal matter is hitting the occillating device. Couple "social work" 870s and 1911s round out the HD tools.

I had to pick other because I would grab either a .22LR or .2Mag. They will take all the game in my area, since the the biggest thing we have is whitetail and lots of samml game.
