This is not a request to buy, otherwise this would be in the trade post.

I would like to know what I can expect to get for $200 to $250 chambered in 22lr. I am open to semi-autos and double-action revolvers (SA/DA is ok), anything that is a repeater. I would be willing to stretch to $300 if the deal is super.

The main purpose of the gun is to shoot a friendly league this summer. Due to my muscle tone right now I have a problem getting through a magazine in my friends G23 .40S&W so ulterior motive is to build up some arm strength. I don't expect to be stacking the holes on top of each other at 50 yards anytime soon so as long as it can hit a plate at that range I will be happy.

What should I look for in that price range. Also what would be a super deal at $300?

bigalexe, I just shot my Smith and Wesson 22A the other day for the first time and it was awesome. The most accurate of the handguns I took out to shoot that day. I didn't even have to adjust the sights. I believe they list for $279, but I bought mine, new, on black friday for $199. It come with a decent carrying case, two magazines, and a lock for the action. It didn't jam once, and I was using 25 year old ammo. It WAS remmington high velocity, however, which I've found to be the best for auto loaders.

Keep in mind, every gun can be different. 22lr wasn't designed to be a semi-auto round, so semi-autos can be picky about what brand of ammo they let you use. I personally avoid straight lead bullets, opting fo the copper tipped ammo instead. Still, my 22A handled hollowpoints just fine, and they can sometimes cause a problem.

The best $200 gun I've EVER owned, bar none, but that's just my experience.

I've heard good things about Heritage single action revolvers. Maybe someone else can tell you more about them.

My son bought a Berreta U22 Neos, and it's a pretty good gun for $250. Very accurate, but I know some people do not like the grips shape, but I like it.

Ruger Mark III's are on sale right now at Cabela's for $279
Ruger Mark III

or you can get a BuckMark for about $329
Browning BuckMark

In that price range you can buy a S&W 22A, Ruger Mark III or even a Ruger Single-Six. any of those 3 would be a good buy and you will shoot them for a long time. As a matter of fact, the only semi-auto pistols I like to shoot are in .22LR!!! (with the exception of a 1911 :p )

+1 on the S&W 22a. I have 2 of them & they are on sale for $200 at Cabelas right now. Sold as stated above:2- 10rd mags, Lock, A couple extra recoil buffer spacers, & nice hard case all backed by S&W lifetime warranty.

I have a bull barrel with factory "Match" grips I paid $250 NIB at a gun show with the Holo sight (Pictured below) & a basic "Slab side" I paid $175 for. Both models come with a built in rail to mount optics if you like. They are very accurate & easy to maintain. We hit clays at 60yrds consistantly. Both of mine like Federal bulk 525 36gr copper washed HP which is nice because I have about 20,000 rds of it stock piled!!

The only thing that I see as being a downfall for you is you stated your arms get tired. My bull barrel is kinda nose heavy so I'd suggest the slab side. You might be able to handle them both at your LGS. I love mine! They shoot very well & you can't beat the warranty & S&W's CS for that price!!

Thanks for the tip on the S&W at Cabelas. It's probably about $30 in gas for me to drive there but I haven't made the trip in a few years so I've been itching to go. With a deal like that I might just HAVE to find the time and get my Purchase Permit ASAP.

As far as my arms getting tired, that's why I agreed to shoot once a week for 10 weeks. Hopefully by the end (because who can stand only shoot once a week, probably end up being 2-3 times at least) of 10 weeks they won't be!

Everybody else has given a recomendaton for a semi, so I'll go the other way. You mentioned D/A revolvers. Well those are few and far between in you price range, BUT I did recently find a Harrington & Richardson 999 Sportsman for $138.00 out the door, but they're usually in the $250.00 or so range.

A good reliable semi .22 is a joy to shoot. Get a Ruger Mk II (see if you can find one used) or Browning Buckmark.

S&W 22A for about $225-$250, Browning Buckmark Camper for about $250-$300 or Ruger Mark III 22/45 for about the same.

If you trip over a used S&W 422, 622 or 2206 that is in nice shape with some magazines I would not turn away. I've got a 422 and a short barrel 2206 and find them to be great shooters that have both proven to be highly reliable. Both of them are fine with a wide variety of the HV bulk ammo I've used with them.

Purchase Permit??? You really need to vote your current Congress out and put some new gun friendly people in there. Can you imagine having to get a permit to write an Editorial in the news paper or to speak at your local PTA meeting? IMO it's the same exact thing...

When you get down to Cabela's don't forget to also take a look at the Ruger Single-Six revolvers. They are also a lot of fun to shoot...

As I understand it the Purchase Permit Pre-Dates the NICS system. It is currently on paper to repeal it because all the permit entails is going to the local PD, they run you through NICS and fill out some paperwork. If you have a CPL it isn't necessary to get the permit either.

Also our last Gov. for 8 years was a Dem, and now we got Rick Snyder so YES we did vote out the critters. Also I can't vote in the districts that are the problem, only in my district and here the politicians are on our side.
