What do people do with nice .22 LR Rifles?

"Man people make the craziest assumptions sometimes."

I only know what I read in the part I quoted. A statement is not an assumption.

i have a few "fine" .22s i hunt with all of them at one time or another...people spend any sum on a centerfire but the lowly .22 gets short shriff...to me a fine .22 is the same as any other fine rifle...love to look at them..ahoot them..enjoy them

"most people want to pay for more accuracy even when they can't shoot well enough to get that accuracy from the gun"

Not generally true.

Most people purchase rifles that, though not considered particularly accurate by the standards of those who know, are more accurate than the average shooter.

In other words, they buy more accuracy than they really require, but generally aren't willing to spend the money to get rifles that are truly accurate.

In other words, the average .22 rifle is more accurate than the shooting ability of the average American gun owner, but not accurate enough for people who train to shoot rimfire rifles with great accuracy in competitive situations.

Sheffield shooter, I can't believe I'm saying this (I'm a "damn Yankee", born & bred), but that link is darn near a reason for me to leave VT and move south. Y'all have a great thing going there!

Thanks man. In one or more of the following capacities, I have been supporting, designing, tweaking, shooting in, or running these .22 matches since 1989. Your statement reminds me that we NASA, Inc. members need not take our match schedule for granted.

I have spent a fair amount of money on custom building a .22
Roughly $1500.00 spent on trigger, stock, barrel scope and other assorted parts fo one one my Ruger 10/22's.

I guess that I might be considered less then fanatical but If I can keep my 50 yard groups to 1 inch I'm satisfied. In my opinion a .22 is a fine rifle for plinking and small game hunting but I don't see the purpose of having to go nuts trying to fine tune a .22 to shoot 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. .22's are for fun shooting and aren't meant for long range.

I've built AR15's and I can understand the need for extreme accuracy for them or for that matter any centerfire rifle but, rimfires are fun guns and now I own 3 Henry lever actions and although they aren't as accurate as a lot of bolt guns, to me they are to me meant to enjoy an inexpensive afternoon of shooting. My favorite rifle is my Henry .22 Mag

I use my Anschutz 1710FTW for smallbore silhouette and my Ruger Race rifle for bowling pins (heads).

My most accurate 22 is a Remington 513T and it's pretty accurate. I use it for personal challenge. If you can't hit it with that rifle, there's something wrong with your technique. I'm getting a bit rusty, so it'll come out this spring to get back in form. Didn't cost $1K, but it's a fine shooter. That's the thing, finding fine shooters. Once you have one, it ain't for sale. Would I take a grand for it, maybe - but I'd have to think long and hard about it

I've had a slug of other 22's - for a long time all I collected were 22's. I had a goal of having all the major models, but that got a little nutty as the years went by. I've sold some. I'll be selling a few more this year. I'll keep the interesting ones like the 1865 Folbert, a Remington Model 12, the odd Winchester, and Browning or two. Most of the others will either get sold or passed out to family members :)

Thing is they are all fun to shoot. Hang some water balloons in a tree with fishing line, start them swinging and go to it. From 50ft it's the best practice for lead there is. And it's rewarding to connect. You could do it with centerfire, but why?

Yep, it's kind of like shooting walnuts out of a tree.

Isn't America a great place to be! Let's keep it that way!

Funny, I went back to the original post and asked myself "Well, what do I do with my 39A that I didn't do with my old Model 60?"

I do all the same stuff. I'm just more careful about getting it dinged up, I guess...

Of course people in the pursuit of ultimate accuracy for competition shooting (or whatever other reason) may have a different answer. It was a good question posted earlier - does anybody actually hunt with those top-shelf guns?

I don't have any really expensive .22s. But I do have ome nice ones. I use them in the woods and try not to bang them up, but honest wear and tear makes a gun attractive to me.

What do you do with nice .22 LR Rifles?.....you collect them and enjoy reliving a moment from the past, when the hunter used open sights and his favorite rifle to feed the family. Housing them in the safe would be akin to locking up a thoroughbred race horse in a stable.

Rembrandt,

I agree with everything you said completly...............but envy has reared it's ugly green head once again. A winchester 52B sporter, I bet you really enjoy hunting with that classic.

Simply beautiful! Thank you for sharing...and count me among the envious!

I use my CZ452 Varmint for outdoor Silhouette out to 110yds and my restocked Winchester 52 pre-A for 4 position indoor gallery league. I'll put several thousand rounds down range yearly between the two guns. Neither hit the $1000 mark though. A nice mid range ($2000) Anschutz would be nice though

Acquaintance of mine travels the USA in 22 rf benchrest competition. Shoots only Eley Tenex from selected lots. His rifles are totally custom built and have Zeiss glass mounted. Each rifle has 14 to 16 thousand dollars invested in it. These things are beautiful to say the least. I was able to shoot one of his. What was amazing was the trigger pull if you could call it pull. The slightest touch was all that was needed. Whole thing too rich for my blood and too precision for me to find it enjoyable.

I have a BSA target gun with a 24" bull barrel made in 1913.....single shot falling block....original lyman peep sight on it.....its a great shooter, I shoot it three nights a week at our local indoor rifle club.....25 yrds paper targets and silouhettes

Same thing I do with every other .22 rifle. I hunt with them, target shoot, plink, hone my shooting skills, etc.. IMHO, a "nice" .22 rifle is too nice NOT to use as intended. It does you no good at the house because you're afraid of dings and wear. Life is too short, live a little. Get out there and make some memories.

Do you guys laugh and spit at the Marlin bolt action rifles?
Wow, carry a chip much???

Step 1: Buy a ton of ammo.
Step 2: Find a bunch of odd junk to shoot.
Step 3: Enjoy.
Step 4: Realize that you could afford to do this every week.

NY Marksman;
I see that that bottom pic GB has had the receiver D&Ted.
Did you do that and what rail(s) did you use for the rings?
I have a cantilever mount for my GB. I am waiting for Leupold to ship the new VX 1 2-7x28 RF to see if I like the mount.

I would love a classic bolt like that 52B. Until then, I have the ubiquitous 10/22. It's not a $1000 rifle, but I'm working on it. I've put about $100 worth of parts into it (with more time than I care to admit) and have a very nice shooting 10/22 that looks like a stock carbine. I'll likely never get the rifle to the standards of some shown here, and that doesn't matter, because I can't shoot as well as some of the guys here.

I suppose you could say I'm making Honda Civic into a street rod. That will have to do since I can't afford something nicer right now.

I'm going to shut up now and go back to looking at all the amazing rifles in this thread.
