Or, What The Heck Is The Matter With People?

So, over in my pseudo neighborhood of E.Nashville, a rapidly gentrifying area (read rich yuppies moving in displacing the old trash), one of my neighbors built himself and his wife a new bakery. The bakery has done well as a little neighborhood place and everyone likes it. When they were renovating a guy walked in and mugged two workmen who were there. Oh well.
Last week I found out that some guy (not the same one) came in during business hours with a hood on his head, jumped the register, told them he had a gun, and proceeded to chase the owner before making off with the cash receipts. (How much money can you get from a bakery? I dunno. Maybe it was the dough).
So the other day I went in to talk to the guy because we're friendly and sort of neighbors and he's a fellow MOT. And I said, you know, criminals are like cats: if you feed them they'll come back again. He said, yeah he knew something like that but hoped it was an isolated incident. I said, y'know, Mr Weiss who owns the liquor store had one hold up attempt. The robber found himself staring at the wrong end of Mr. Weiss's 12ga pump and he hasmt had any problems since them. A liquor store is a different business, my friend says.
I have a shotgun I really have no use for, I tell him. I didnt pay much for it and it doesnt work real well but it would work well enough to protect you if something like this happened again. I'd be happy to give it to you and even teach you how to use it. No, he says. Honestly I hate guns and they scare me.
So this guy, who works there alone with his wife, is more afraid of a shotgun in his hands than a bad guy who has already had one succesful hit on his store. What is wrong with people??? :banghead:

There's nothing "wrong" with them. They have been aptly described elsewhere as "walking cheeseburgers," natural sustenance for anyone who desires to "take a bite out of 'em." They are perfectly suited to that role.

They fear the devil they know less than the one they don't?

They're just stupid?

got to respect the personal choice

If this friend of yours really feels this way, then that is his choice and you have to respect that. I don't agree with his decision, but what can you do? He knows himself better than we know him.

Maybe he and his wife ARE better off without a shotgun around if he is so firearm-averse. Lots of posts around here at THR about the firearm only being a small part of the self-defense equation, with the other larger part being mindset. I dunno, maybe he's a Quaker or something?

Give it time... a couple more muggings and thefts and he'll be ripe for conversion - either that, or he'll move to a victim-rich environment like NYC or DC!

:fire:

Reiterating Preacherman's words, just wait. When (not if) this happens once or twice more he'll either pack up and leave or he'll come find you. "Umm ... about that shotgun ..."

SHEEPLE!!!

Their lead around by someone telling them that they will protect them.

In todays world this just isn't true. I give the LEO's all the credit in the world but they, for the most part, are after the fact protectors. We must become proactive in our own defense or else as are sheep, we will be preyed upon.

JMHO

We get the society that we deserve. As long as the prevailing group think is guns are evil, the cooks will prosper.

BTW What is a MOT? I hope that this isn't a dumb question.

Just let it go

Trying to convince someone that they need a gun is pointless. Instead, ask your friend how he plans on protecting his wife and his livelihood. Tell your friend that you are concerned for his safety and the safety of his wife. Ask your friend what happens when they are robbed again but don't have enough money to satisfy the robbers. Maybe they will take out thier frustration on his wife. Ask him how much he loves his wife and wishes her to be safe. Don't convince him he needs a gun...let him figure that out for himself ;)

That guy Weiss isn't related to me, but I wish he was. I can easily envision me doing the same thing (though I'm pretty likely to have simply ventilated the goblin).

Hopefully, your neighbor will wake up one day, and understand that the responsibility for defending himself and his wife is HIS, and that the cops simply cannot be everywhere.

Member of the Tribe, i.e. a fellow Jew. No, there are no dumb questions, just dumb people for not asking them. Thanks for letting me clear that up.

Ya never know... people do sometimes have legitimate reasons for not wanting a gun around; kid they don't trust, family member who has shown signs of being suicidal recently, things like that. Yeah, you can get around those with a good safe, but that costs as much as the gun in many cases- I know I haven't been able to afford one yet... so it's the not-so-handy-in-case-of-break-in box and padlock for now.

On the other hand, if you really want to find a happy home for that shotgun, I think I can help. :p

His explicit reason was he is scared of guns and they are not in his make up.

Do you really want to pay shipping etc for a Brolin Arms 12ga mag fed?

The only sensible thing to say is 'Can I be in your will?'

If a person doesn't want help, no amount of outside helping will make any difference. May as well make the best of it for yourself.

. Maybe they will take out thier frustration on his wife.

That's exactly what I was thinking. He's not going to take SD seriously until he or she gets hurt. Of course, it will not be pretty and it'll be a hard lesson to learn.

I do agree that you gotta respect his stances. But even "the good reasons" (kids, cost, ignorance) can all be worked with. Of course you take precautions for everything when there is a firearm around. The first step is education.

He may be thinking that only his property has been put into jeopardy and that he does not wish to use lethal force to protect it. He is unable (yet) to forsee that his life and that of his wife are likely to be threatened.

Perhaps he will have an enlightening event in time (before he or his wife are killed or tramatized). Perhaps he will not.

I'd let it go until that occurs. When he sees his life directly threatened, he may be willing to reconsider its value and act to protect it -- or maybe not.

If I were the shopkeeper and didn't like/want guns
around,I would make it clear to the local cops that
my business is very cop friendly :D .In other words
free or discounted coffee, free refills, coffee togo.
Crooks tend to stay away from places where LEOs
hang out.
Some friends had a resteraunt and applied this theory.
Worked like a dream.Only difference was that the hubby and wife were also packing.
Not once did they have a problem.

QuickDraw

Ahh, we use to do that at Pizza Hut :D Free food and drink for our LEOs and they came in quite a bit to "check up on us"

You can only hope he figures it out before one or both of them eat lead from a(some) Bad Guy(s). Sad but true...some of life's lessons are only learned at an extremely high price.

Gotta like QuickDraw & Shorts ideas of being a very "Police Officer Friendly" place if owners do not want to have their own firearms around.

Actually yeah, I'd probably pay Shipping & Handling & FFL for a Brolin. Most of what I'd use it for would be shooting blanks on a movie set, and perhaps something more intimidating looking/sounding than my Steyr M40 in case the wrong kinda person comes through my door.

Okay, yes, I have metal grates on my doors, it's still possible. Two weeks ago my car was stolen out of my driveway, and two days ago my wife's car had the window smashed so they could steal a daiper bag and a baby sling!

...okay, so the daiper bag had a wallet, cellphone, and keys in it, so it wasn't such a dumb thing for the person to do... just a mean thing.

What's the problem with the Brolin?

Thanks for the explanation, the best I could figure out before scrolling down was 'Man Of (the) Torah' - close, but no banana!

And what are the laws on making your establishment "Cop Friendly" anyway? Is there a line where it becomes bribery, or are they just not likely to enforce anything like that unless it becomes a PR issue?
