Pacifist, Jew, Quaker, Baptist, or whoever...it's difficult for most of us on this forum to understand how many people can apparently suppress the inherent, innate instinct for self defense and self preservation. I've never been a tough guy, but I have to think that if I were presented with unavoidable, physical danger, I'd fight back as hard as I could and with anything at my disposal.
I also believe that, as others have mentioned, one is a product of their environment. I was raised in Kansas. I hunted and learned to shoot from a father and an entire family who did the same. I was taught to not look for trouble, to be courteous and polite, but to respect onesself and not be anybody's doormat. I'd have a hard time just handing over my hard earned livelihood to some cross eyed crackhead, without giving myself some form of deterrent, and the mindset to use it.
I certainly wouldn't want to take anyone's life, no matter who they were. But, if they're willing to take mine over a Danish and $20 in the register, all bets are off. Still, those folks who loathe the idea of self defense in any form, should be allowed the right to continue in their beliefs. I don't have to understand it, and I'm sure glad I'm not one of them.
