Right now the 5" 1911 Series 70 is the pistol I am most familiar with, though every time I go to the range I get a little more used to the 3-dot novaks on my Wifes SIG P226.
There is an 870 and an SKS both ready to go as well, but the .45 is the trusty one for now. Hopefully soon I will have a CZ75 and SIG P226 sharing safe space with the 1911, and then I might re-evaluate which handgun is the best HD weapon.
Tactically the rifle or shotgun are better, but the .45 is what I am comfy with, and with CMC 10 rounders it doesn't lose capacity to anything else in the safe. The 1911 is also one weapon I feel confident with in either hand, 1 or 2 handed, firing from a good stance or from the ground, whatever.
