What if I don't want to pocket carry a lcp?

Stepping up from the 380's, whats the next best option but can still pocket carry reasonably? Winter time a coat pocket, summer maybe IWB, but still need pant pocket option. My new job has me all over the place, sometimes inner city, sometimes peoples homes. So I need 100% concealment.

CM9?
LCR?

What else?

Experiences appreciated.

The CM9 gets great reviews. I love my Sig P290. It is basically the same size as the CM9 (although 4oz heavier but still fits in the pocket). 3 things I really like. Comes with an ext 8rd mag that is great for IWB. It is very slim so OWB works and the extra 4ozs really soak up recoil. I have shot lots of those size 9mm over hte years and the Sig P290 is the softest recoiling IMHO

Ha, I was just going to add the "J frame and go home" and the "p290".

How is the p290 weight in the pants?

I tried a lcr at the store, and I noticed a good diff. between the .38 and .357 in the pants.

Is 15 oz the limit?

Great in the pocket or IWB.
Not the most pleasant thing to shoot 100 rounds through, though.
Serves the purpose.

It depends on your pockets. I wear 34x32 standard fit/boot cut pants and jeans, and my LCP is at the very limit of comfortable pocket carry for me. My Kahr CM9 can fit, but is very uncomfortable, and hard to get out of the pocket quickly and cleanly. Same with my j-frame - it feels like trying to stuff a softball in my pocket. Maybe I don't have a very high tolerance for bulky guns in my pants pocket, or maybe everyone else on THR wears much bigger baggier pants, but the micro .380s are the biggest I can pocket carry comfortably in all situations. When I coat pocket carry in the winter, I usually "upgrade" to the Kahr or the 642.

The CM9 is a great gun with a very smooth trigger. I recommend the Hogue Handall Junior finger groove rubber grip sleeve - it makes holding onto the tiny gun much easier under actual firing.

The LC9 is the logical step up from the LCP, if you like the LCP. I like the looks but I'm a bit wary of the reliability and the trigger is pretty awful. I like SIG's P238/P938 family too, but my preference in a pocket gun is my .357 LCR.

Not very many options out there (other than 380 and smaller) if you're going to pocket carry. The CM9, maybe a 938 are ok sized, but even these somewhat small guys still weigh a bunch and IMHO are better suited for belt carry.

The LCP I owned was was very reliable and accurate with American Eagle ball ammo. The only objection was easy oxidation of the slide. I don't know if silvery slide is stainless or chromed job but that is the one I would pick if I was you.

P938. Much thinner and sleeker than it's poly brethren, and nice shooters.
While 938 has nice dimensions and excellent sights the single action trigger with manual safety automatically disqualifies it as viable pocket weapon.

Pocket guns with no safety require a pocket holster to cover the trigger no matter what. With a SA pistol with safety, it's less probable it would discharge. It would require two things going wrong, the safety getting flipped off, and then the trigger being engaged.

There is also the reality that a DA pocket gun means a long heavy trigger pull, and sometimes the individual has no choice but to give them up. Carpal Tunnel means you may have to carry a small SA with safety just to get a shot off. I sold the LCP and bought the P938 for exactly that reason.

It's not as absolute as some would make it out. And there are those who just drop an LCP in their pocket with no holster at all, which seems less safe than IWB with a Versacarry. Everybody makes their own decisions.

One of the significant issues with pocket carry is what holster is used, as the padded ones take up considerable room. My LCP with pocket carry holster took up more space than the P938 bare. What seems to be happening in holsters is using a lot of laminated fabrics to keep them comfortable, a reasonable goal. On the other hand, some custom makers simply use an elastic band stitched to a thin firm backer to hide the outline. How aggressively the gun is shaped has led to a lot of melt jobs in the past. SIG offers the P938 both ways.

What pants you wear have a big influence, just like carrying IWB. Tight jeans are really an expression of style, not function. If you are going to carry, you need to include the room for the pistol, so like it or not, you have to size up to get a reasonable amount of slack. Bigger pistol, more room.

There are other alternatives, like the inordinately expensive t-shirt holsters, shoulder holsters, ankle holsters, etc. It comes to mind that if a gun is better than no gun, but it must be concealed, then some kind of compromise will need to be made.

S&W 642. Various holsters to suit various needs, from belt to under athletic shorts with no shirt. Reliable, accurate, much more power than a .380, not nearly as un-fun to shoot as a polymer micro 9.

There are really at least a dozen guns that fit your needs. It just comes down to you going and looking at them and also shooting as many as possible. But size wise, you are in a pretty large category. It's time to do the legwork.

Who needs pockets? Easily hides and accessed under a dress type shirt. Made one for my LCP as well, just dont have a pic.

I pocket carry a Glock 26 'round the Farm and around the house in a Desantis Nemesis. Untucked T-shirt, hoody, sweatshirt, or whatever to break up the outline.

I'm 6' 3" with a 32" waist and with blue jeans (the relaxed fit kind) I can put unbelievable things in my front pocket under an un tucked shirt and no one seems to notice even when I flaunt it a bit. Things like a Colt Officers ACP, Colt 1903 Model M, Glock 26 and even a Beretta Px4sc not to mention small revolvers.

The biggest problem (for me...) is making sure if it's heavy (like the Colt Officers or the Px4sc) to have a good belt cinched so the pants don't sag and the weight doesn't ride my pants down a little.

I have a tight waist so that looks very natural - if a person was a little heavier/has a little extra in the middle it might be tougher.

J frames are big compared to LCP. Try a Kahr PM9.

Or a Rohrbaugh. :)

IMO if you want 100% concealment in any clothing, it's really tough to beat the LCP in a thin pocket holster.

Perhaps it disqualifies it for you. Since 1986 when it was introduced, I have been pocket carrying a Colt Mustang, then upon it's introduction a Sig 238,followed by a Sig 938. Thats 27 years of SA/Manual safety pocket carry. Growing up with 1911's I still instinctively try to sweep the safety off any pistol when I aim to fire, including my DA/SA Sigs.

With your stated choice of pants you are severely limited. I find that relaxed fit jeans are best for carry and I pick my pants for the size and depth of the right front pocket. Consequently I can carry a 642 or PF9 without being made.
