What is a good long range rifle cartridge?

For me personally I feel that any shot on big game out past 400 is a no go. I am not saying that it can't be done and that people don't do it all the time. But I will not do it. I do not want to run the risk of wounding an animal at that range and having it wander off where I can't find it. 400y is what I consider to be medium range. I can hit targets at that range but I'd rather not try it on an Elk. But again that is just me.
I think you would be best served by picking which is most important to you at this time. Hunting or target shooting, and go with that. You can always save up for another rifle. For a hunting rifle over .30 my pick would be 35 Whelen. But as always YMMV.
