.500S&W would be good to have as a side arm, but certainly not the primary weapon.

Except that just short of an act of god there is only one country that allows elephant hunting where you are allowed to carry a side arm.

* Cartridges: S&H 2 Bore Black powder express 3.5" 700gr FFg.
* The Rotary Underlever acts to the right, at the request of the Customer, all other functions are left handed.
* Engraving is a custom pattern by Stolzer and Son's in traditional broad acanthus leaves.

Only if by "successfully" you include losing some. He eventually went to a .318, but apparently stopped because of problems with the cartridge cases.

And admitted in his book that in thick brush he like to use the.. I need to look again.. but it was either a .400Jeff (.450-400) or a .416 Rigby.
 
My vote goes to the 45-70 in Marlin Guide gun. I heard it's comparable to the .458 Win Mag
