What is the BEST 22lr Rifle out there?

That Weahterby really has me thinking, even though it is not an Anschutz match action, the barrel will still be first rate and even the Anschutz sporter actions are better than most others I can think of.

Plain and simple. The Marlin 39A. The 22 rifle by which all other sporting .22 rifles are judged.

I loved the Marlin I had when I was a lad (just a while ago), but if there's a nicer .22 than an Anschütz, I don't know what it would be. Even I shoot them well.

The most accurate and fun hunting weight .22LR I have (and unbelievably accurate) is my Savage Mark II. Using a Sweet22 scope at set at 9X, and target ammo, it groups 8 of 10 shots into a 0.75" X 0.75" clutser, with the remaining 2 shots opening the clutser up to about 1.5" by 0.75". I suspect that I am the cause of the fliers...not the rifle. For a standard weight hunting rifle, that cost me about $150.00, that's going to be difficult to beat. :)

I have tested my Marlin 39A at 100 yards yet.

that is the M-64 action...the same as used in the Weatherby

I have an excellent Anschutz 1415-1416 with which I used to shoot smallbore sillhouette competitions. I have been extremely pleased with it but I don't have any recent targets to give you range specs. Whichever rifle you settle on make sure you try different ammo types. It really can make a big difference in your accuracy.

As much as I love my Anschutz, I must agree with an earlier poster that the Savage (especially with the AccuTrigger) is an incredible gun. It definitely competes with guns in higher price brackets. I worked in a gun shop for three years before becoming a cop, and the only complaint I EVER heard about the Savage rifles was that a small handful of people didn't like the feel of the stock. If I didn't already have my Anschutz I would definitely by a Savage.

AMT 'Small Game Hunter' heavy bbl. if you can find one. a 10/22 on steroids.
no irons, scope only. regularly get crows at 100 yds and over that if the wind is kind to me.
Marlins are great too. and Brownings (but pricey).

9mmepiphany hit the nail on the head!

The best there is would be the Anschutz 1710/1712, unless you can find a Winchester 52c Sporter. The best value for money is the CZ 452/453, they are quite fine rifles. I've tried most of them and, IMHO, these are the best,

I had the same question not too long ago. There are all kinds of resources on that site. It all depends on the price range you'll want to be in. I think Anschutz and Cooper are set the standard, but not many people want to spend or can spend $1000+.

I from the research I've done, the CZ 452 is the probably the best buy for the money if you're looking for the one with the most accuracy. I was fence sitting between the Savage MKII or the CZ 452. I handled both and afterwards had made up my mind. The Savage didn't have near as pretty stock and the action felt a lot cheaper than the CZ.

Winchester 52, in production for about 60years, always top of the heap. My sporterized 1920 custom has produced the occasional 1/4" group at 100yds, 3/8" more common.....

Most of the .22 hunting that I do is for squirrels. A lot of times, you can be in sight of more than one at a time, so an autoloader is nice to keep movement between shots to a minimum, and subsonic ammo doesn't scare everything in the woods. A short gun is a lot handier in the woods, and light weight is a good thing, too. So this is what I came up with:

light1022b.jpg

It weighs an ounce under six pounds with scope, sling and magazine, about like a stock 10/22, and it's even shorter. Slung muzzle down, it's out of the way and doesn't snag on stuff in the woods. The trigger pull is 2 pounds, and from the bench it will put Eley subsonic hollow points into a third of an inch at 50 yards. The daily limit on squirrels around here is six, and this thing has come home a couple of times with a perfect six for six record.

Of course, it's kind of ugly and stumpy. It would still be kind of ugly in a nice walnut stock. Due to the Bentz chamber, it won't extract an unfired round of a lot of kinds of ammo, including what I hunt with. It also won't shoot the first hand chambered round to the same point of impact as the rounds cycled by firing. So the routine is, load a magazine, chamber a round, and fire one into the ground before going into the woods. Then drop the magazine and fire the chambered round into the ground to clear the thing after coming out. Kind of a nuisance.

So it's not the best, but it's the best that I've come up with so far for what I do. You can set up a 10/22 for just about any purpose, and they are as much fun to build as they are to shoot.

22 rifle

My most accurate (sub moa @ 100 yards) is an old Remington 541S. My Ruger 10/22 with heavy aftermarket barrel will shoot moa @ 100 yards. My Ruger 77/22 SS will shoot 1 3/4" @ 100 yards. My Thompson Contender carbine (match grade 16") will shoot 1 1/4" @ 100 yards. I like em all. They all have their place. I shouldn't forget my old Marlin model 39 which is my favorite with open sights. It is minute of squirrel @ 50 yards. Good shooting

I'm a fan of my Marlin 925. 22" barrel, laminated stock, 1 1/4 lbs trigger and a Sightron S1 3-9X40MD. 5 shot groups at 25 yards I can get 3/8", 100 yards I have shot a 5 shot group of 1.439" and at 150 yards I can get a 3 shot 2 1/4". CCI mini mag 36 grain hp's are my ammo of choice for it.

Took a crow out with one shot at 134 yards.

I have a Ruger 77/17HM2 with the tapered target barrel and walnut stock, and am in love, while not as nice as the Annie or Cooper, it is a very nice rifle to shoot, has great pointing, very accurate, and with the Rifle Basix trigger it has a better trigger than my Savage with accutrigger. And super cheap ammunition. Less than decent 22LR and 1/3 the cost of HMR, HMR being a total ripoff.
I have shot and owned the Savage MKII and while it is a better shooting rifle, in 22LR not HM2, it is not as nice to carry and shoot with.

Anschutz guns are superb. I've shot a couple and they are well-made and accurate. I REALLY dislike the plastic knob they're putting on the bolt handles of some new models. They must've resurrected a Winchester exec from 1963 to dream up that one. I've got a Brno (Cold War version of the CZ452) with a Leupold 4x .22 scope that's a solid shooter, but only marginally more so than my father's Win. M69 (c.1935). I've shot mountains of small game with these rifles and never felt either lacking in performance.

However, I did just go totally nuts and should have a Cooper Western Classic .22 LR in hand next week. Cooper guarantees 1/4" groups at 50 yards with premium target ammo. The Anschutz could be comparable, but I don't see them advertised as such. From what I've read here and especially at rimfirecentral.com those are about the best over-the-counter rimfires you can get. Some might argue for the Kimber, but it seems to mostly run a close third after those two others. Good luck.

Anschutz, Cooper and the other high priced 22lrs

I want to thank everyone for your recommendations. For those who have recommended the high priced 22lrs such as Anschultz...DANG! I do not even pay that much for my deer rifles...so I have a very hard time even considering paying that much for a 22lr.

I would love to shoot one though to see what I could do with it...who knows...maybe if I did I would reconsider...

Has anyone bought a 22lr from CMP? Was it a good buy? Would you buy another one from them? Was it accurate?

Thanks,

My Marlin 60 was $140 and it is accurate enough with the standard irons to hit anything I would seriously consider shooting with it. I've only put maybe 500 rounds through it but so far it has functioned flawlessly. I also use it as my squirrel rifle.

I bought my Kimber Model 82 Govt' through the CMP. It is very accurate, with match ammo at 50yds it can put rounds in the same hole if I can do my part.

I would buy it again in a heartbeat, and I would also not blink about buying a higher priced .22LR. Eventually I am going to have to buy an Anschutz match rifle. I used to shoot them in college, and they are amazing. Amazing.

DANG! I do not even pay that much for my deer rifles...
i wouldn't pay that much for a deer rifle either...well, OK, i would for a Cooper...but it is alot easier to spend that much for a good .22lr

you will easily run 10 times as many rounds through the RF as you would through a CF rifle...if not thousands...why would you not spend 3-5 times as much on the RF rifle

9mmepiphany makes an excellant point on the costs vs. amount of use. As much as I love my rimfires I never much thought about the number of rounds I put through the rimfires vs. the centerfires.

Cz452

Of those listed my CZ452 American with a 4x-12x 40mm scope atop has accounted for many, many woodchucks, rabbits and squirrels. It is my favorite hunting rig.

best regards,

Luis Leon
