I'm going to say the Beretta U22 with the 6" barrel. For what you're going to spend, you can get it, a scope, scope mount, a couple of boxes of match grade ammo, and some targets, head out to the range, and be shooting .75" groups all in one day.

Some don't like their Neo's. I love mine, wouldn't trade it. I just didn't like the front sight that came with it.

I would think since you allready have a bunch of Rugers that it would be a natural choice to get a .22 from them ! I persoanly have a Beretta Neos which i really like mine was 269.00 i added a inexpensive Red dot sight because i cant see like i used to! it shoots just fine feels great in the hand and points naturaly and has an ambi safety ! Also you can get a replacement barrel of different length with its own sights for less than 100 bucks ! You could have a 8 inch for the target range and a 4 inch for trailside !! I love my other Rugers and if i get another .22 it would be a ruger !

With all those Glocks, just buy a 22lr conversion for one. Great training, and cheap.

I had a Walther P22 and although it never malfunctioned and was pretty accurate, I just never did like it. It was a terrible fit in my hand and just generally gave me no pleasure. I sold it and bought a Ruger Mark III standard fixed sight model and I love it (shot it for the first time yesterday). It shoots great even with fixed sights, feels great, and it makes me wish I had held onto one of the target bull barrel Mark II's I owned years ago. In fact, now I'll probably have to buy a Mark III target version.
Also, with its all-steel heft and classic looks It's now my favorite gun to fondle while watching TV.

I've got one with about 700 rounds through it. I can't stand it. Wish I'd never bought NIB. You're welcome to it if you'd like to make an offer.

Opinions about the "best" .22 semiauto in the sub $500 price range are not like noses, everyone has more than one. I think it boils down to fit and feel.

Ruger: The MKIII GC and Hunter (standard grip all stainless and 22/45). Both are excellent for accuracy, reliability and durability. There is hardly any fall-off in the 5.5" models, blued or stainless. Rugers come with a weaver rail, 2 mags. The after-market for tweaks and upgrades is almost limitless. (Iti is major work to change the grips on the 22/45, the all-steel models can ge changed easily.) Although you can adjust the trigger on the target model (anything with a bull barrel), it is relatively easy to drop in a Clark or VQ trigger with external adjustments. Add a VQ sear and you get a very crisp trigger with about 2-2.5lb pull. The MKIII differs from the MKII by having the magazine release on the side of the grip, a loaded chamber indicator and a magazine safety. Neither the LCI or the mag safety affect the performance of the pistol. The mag safety can be removed by substituting a MKII hammer and bushing. Rugers are great pistols out of the box and the sky is the limit on teaks.

Buck Mark: In your price range, the target or field models should provide excellent shooting. The pistols are reliable, durable, accurate and consistent. I have the BM Standard and it is a great shooting pistol. There is not a big aftermarket for Buck Marks.

S&W 22A: Very accurate and very reliable. A bit more sensitive to ammo than the Ruger or Buck Mark. The pistol shoots better (accuracy and consistency) with SV ammo. Not much in the way of upgrades (grips and barrels).

P22: Not in the same class as the the other three. Not as accurate and has some design/materials of construction problems that could shorten the life of the pistol. Gets high marks for small, lightweight and overall cool.

In the end, the one you like best is "best." The MKIII, Buck Mark and 22A are great shooters and you can't go wrong with either.
