before randomly changing out carbine parts, check chamber and headspace. Chamber might be tight or too little headspace - this could by the cause of your mysterious .30 carbine problems.
Another issue on your M1 Carbine could simply be the mags. Try one of the new manufacture Korean mags, they're $10 and work great. Some of the milsurp mags have got a little too much age on them.
I have a lever gun. I love the idea. The reality (IMHO) is: limited mag capacity, slow reloading and sore fingers from whacking usually unwhacked parts on my fingers in the lever.
I am actually thinking of moving in the direction of a stellar reliability M1 carbine for a grab and go piece. I can carry more ammo than almost anything else with comperable stopping power. I have the mags, can remanufacture ammo for 19 cents a pop. If I really want a penetrator, I can resize 71 grain .312FMJ to .308 and god knows what I will get but I am thinking it will be pretty good for a carbine. I may even have the gun, I just haven;t fred it enough since my last work over to be sure
+1.
The first carbine that came to mind was the Thompson Contender with a 16.25 inch barrel. Available in a bewildering number of chamberings and marvelously accurate.
