Both of these knives are gifts and have S35VN steel. The Hampter is small. 2” blade only. Very sharp. The Ivy is a 3” knife and scary sharp. Got it for my dad.

They’re both very well made. I really like the Ivy a lot. The Hamster is too small for me but it’s going to a very small person.

Bestech Nuke. I’ve been waiting for this one. Kombou designs have become my favorite. 2.65” is M390. Wonderful little knife. The color combo on this will not be for everyone. Came hair popping sharp out of the box.

DLT Trading did this "Twelve Days of Christmas" thing where for each of the first twelve days of December they released a special limited product from a bunch of different makers or manufacturers who volunteered.

Matt Martin of Vehement Knives channeled his inner fourteen-year-old ninja and made four sets of shurikens and eight different kunai. I was lucky enough to score one of the two large kunai, this one in black epoxied hemp wrap, 1095 with full quadruple dagger grind. This monster is just over a foot long. Does this have a use for me? No. But now I can cosplay as Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, so there's that.

I was lusting after these ones - the Sobral brothers in Argentina made 28 of these amazing Scagel-pattern big hunter bowies. They're 410 stainless san mai over acid-etched 1095 high-carbon with stag handles and spacers of various exotic hardwoods. But they were $1,150 a pop, and I just couldn't swing it.

Nice S&W hollow handle survival knife! Blackie Collins, working in concert with S&W, designed some mighty fine (and relatively inexpensive knives) back in the mid to late '70s. The knives they turned out from the shop they had set-up in the S&W factory were more like semi-custom in their build quality and overall fit and finish than if they were mass produced by an established knife maker.

My favorite is the Survival Bowie knife with it's brass hollow chamber inside a Wessonwood handle and it's highly polished stainless steel blade! Should have bought the Bowie Knife and the Folding Hunter but at the time money was tight and I was also getting into buying guns and going hunting.

I couldn't agree more. Today we'd refer to them as "Mid Tech", but in reality, they were far more custom than that. Blackie and Michael Collins completed each knife themselves if the history I heard is correct. I need to reach out to Blackie's widow and send here a picture of this one and ask how she's doing.

When I saw the Cold Steel Bushman that @Speedo66 posted in the survival knives topic, it got me to thinking back to when I was a young Marine. I had seen the Bushman advertised in a magazine. I wanted one but never got one.
The other day I was at my buddy’s pawn shop when UPS arrived with a bunch of packages. It was busy so, I got behind the counter and helped out. While I was there my buddy was able to unpack the packages that had arrived. A lot of it was stuff for the gun room.
A bunch of knives were in one of the packages. As my buddy was putting the knives in the display case, he said to me, you should buy this. He was holding a Bushman in his hand. I really didn’t need it, but what the hell. He let me have it for $20 out the door.

There is something satisfying about something so simple that changed human history so dramatically. Mine wears a broom handle now, but an upgrade lies ahead.

Let us know how you like that steel.

Will do. I can tell you that it sharpens very easily and takes a great edge quickly. I set it at 15 DPS and then stropped it down to .5 microns. I don’t know how to quite explain it, but it felt different on the stones compared to the other higher end steels I have a bit of experience with such as S30V, XHP, 20CV/M390, SPY27, S110V. This is the highest “toughness” knife I have sharpened but I don’t think that plays a role. I would think edge retention and wear resistance would factor far more predominantly in how a steel responds on the stones. It just seemed… different. Not bad or good, just had a different tactile feedback. It sharpens about like XHP and S30V, which probably isn’t surprising at all.

Spyderco’s first catalogue release will be the Native 5 Salt, so they must be very confident in the corrosion resistance testing they have done.

BTW, I hate sharpening S110V… my skills simply aren’t up to the task at all, but I’m really a mediocre sharpener at best. I have improved in the past year, but S110V? Ugh.

It was ridiculous. The server was overwhelmed repeatedly for about an hour straight. After 53 minutes I finally got two, one for me and one for my son. It’s my first mule team and man the ergonomics are awesome on this thing.

BTW, I hogged off some material on a basswood spoon blank with it last night and had no noted decrease in sharpness. So far so good.

I should have picked up one with the satin finish when they were available.
The sale price and lack of black finished ones made my choice easy. I like a satin finish on a knife. Provides nice contrast to dark scales, or handle.

Knifejoy exclusive Spyderco Delica CPM 20CV with an aftermarket MXG blue deep carry clip. For the additional $25 you get a bump from VG10 to 20CV, which seems quite reasonable. Once Flytanium gets more carbon fiber scales I will either swap out for those or a set of Bocote wood scales I commissioned.

The Delica is surprisingly fidget friendly given it’s a back lock. Thumb flick and Spydie flick (middle finger flick) work great.
