I found a S&W Model 10 in a shop. It is an older one, with a pinned barrel. It has a 4" skinny barrel and fixed sights. Blued. The blueing would be in almost 99%, except for a slight wear mark near the muzzle. The square grips have a diamond cut around the grip screws. It's in the box. It almost appears unfired - it looks like it just sat somewhere for a long time. I'm sure it's been fired, but not much at all.

The shop wants $385, which I thought was exhorbitant. (This shop is very high.)

About what kind of price would this thing be worth?

Thanks,
Steve

They are selling it as a "collectors" item. Don't bother they are a great revolver but very common even in that condition. For $200 +/- you should be able to get an older Colt or S&W 38 elsewhere in 90% condition without too much trouble.

Mike,

It has a ramp front sight. I don't know why these jokers are so high.

Thanks,
Steve

Have you talked to them?

I posted a couple weeks back about a $550 Model 15. When I went back to the shop and pointed out that the price was insane, they checked it out and realized they had made an error when setting the initial price.

Now, perhaps this was intentional in an attempt to make some bucks off an uneducated customer... but they dropped the price quickly and without argument when I asked about it.

J&G Sales in Prescott, Arizona (www.jgsales.com) have used S&W M&P .38 revolvers with 4 inch barrels/blue finish/good condition for $168.50 dealer. This is not a super deal, but it makes more sense that what the gun shop you go to is asking. $385.00 should buy you a similar model 19 in .357 Magnum. I'd pass.

This gun shop will not negotiate on their prices. I really don't like the place. The shop is close to where I live and when I'm feeling weak and need a gun fix, I sometimes browse in there.

Thanks again for all the help,
Steve

Some places are like that. Best thing to do is shop around, find a better bargain, buy it, go back to that store and exclaim, "I was able to beat that price at XXXXXXXX.". Let them know your money is going other places.

I just spent a total of $350 on two, a late 60s blued skinney barrel model 10 and a pre-model 10 nickel plate. No boxes and both showed use. Your dealer is about $135. over.

Bought this M10 in December. No box but it was unfired and I paid $176.

I have this exact gun (model 10, skinny barrel, bright nickel plate) which I got new as a gift about 25 years back. A while back a gun shop owner told me it was worth about $200. I laughed at him and said it was worth a lot more than that to me. It's fitted like a Swiss watch, locks up dead tight, is absolutely flawless and has glass smooth trigger pull. I keep it around just to remind me of what SW should be shipping if they still built their guns right.:barf:
