Here is a Reuters photo from the Russian/Georgian conflict. I was wondering what the gun was on the left side.

I know that since it is from Reuters it could be a fake but was curious on what it was since I have not seen it before.

I'm assuming you're not talking about the Kalashnikovs.
I believe the weapon with the scope is a VSS Vintorez silenced sniper rifle.
It fires the 9x39mm cartridge at subsonic speeds to be completely silent.
It could be the other similar weapon (VSK-94), but I don't think the Russkis adopted that one...

Nolo's right, it's a VSS Vintorez.

Play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl to learn every single modern russian firearm. :)

I want to play that game!
Or you could just read all of Max Popenker's site to do the same thing.
He just added the Korobov bullpup assault rifle. The action, which was an enormous mystery to me (if you've ever seen a Korobov, you know why) is also explained there.

Deer Hunter is right on the money. It is the Russian's newer model close-range 9mm sniper rifle with silencer and scope. Those boys are meaning to get very, very close to something when they strike at it.

As much as I abhor what is going on over there, I am relatively interested as many of the weapons developed after the Cold War (that new 9x?? cartridge) may now show up on the fields there.

Thanks for the info. I tend to find new gun/concepts interesting. When do you think they are going to be hitting the US market?

Yeah that's a vintorez. it was originally a 7.62X39, but mid developement they had to change due to the internal silencer. i have a friend in Russia who's dad did some of the initial production.

Just one quick comment. If that is a recent photo from Georgia the Russians still do not appear to very technologically advanced. It looks like us in Vietnam. Even the rockets are LAWS copies, not optics on the rifles, no electronics to speak of or eye protection. Just an observation. Bill

Hold up; that looks a bit like a digitized camouflage scheme. Russian soldiers don't use that kind of camo; Georgian ones do.

On the other hand, Georgian troops don't use many Russian small arms aside from AKs.

supposedly Popenker worked for the makers of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as a consultant on firearms and ballistics accuracy. I don't know if that's actually true, or just an internet rumor.
