What is your deer rifle?

2 years ago: T/C Firestorm flintlock
last year: Mauser 93 7x57
this year: Marlin XS7 7mm-08
I expect that one to be the go-to for a very long time. Especially as it's at the gunsmith getting iron sights added.

Remington 721 in 30-06 with a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x42. I don't know if it's ever killed anything, but it certainly is accurate enough if I ever get the chance.

Of those that have helped fill the freezer over the years:

T/C Hawken kit gun .54
H&R slug gun 12ga
Rem 1100 12ga
Ruger Blackhawk .357
Taurus 669 .357
Taurus 627 .357
Ruger Blackhawk .45colt
....and in November I hope to add my new H&R Ultra-lite slug gun to the list.

I know you said rifles, but can't use 'em in Illinois

1. vz 24 (because "with a military rifle" is on my list)
2-3 (tied) savage 308, rem700 300 wsm

I typically leave the Remington at my in-laws (where I hunt often) and use the savage near my house (where, ironically, I don't hunt as much). This will be the vz24's rookie deer season

1978 Marlin 336 with Hornady Leverolution ammo. Simmons 3-9x40mm scope. Perfect for the GA woods.

Option 2, AR-15 with Speer 70 gr SSP, Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 scope.

I alternate between:

Custom Mauser in .275 Rigby
Ruger 77 RSI in .308
Sako AIII Mannlicher in 30-06
HK SLB 2000K in 30-06
BAR in 30-06
BAR in .270

On occassion I also deer hunt with my Browning 1885 in 45-70 or the AR15 in .50 Beowulf.

Winchester Model 70 .30-06 3x9 Luepold

Wish Winchester still made one like that, reminds me of my Remington 700 BDL, which along with my 1100 is the best looking gun I own.

A lot of beautiful guns in this thread.

I forgot to mention I have also taken out a Savage 340 in .30-30 loaded with spitzer bullets and have also used my dad's sporterized 8mm Mauser, although I have never shot at anything with them.

Also have a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 LC...intended to use it for deer and we had developed a very accurate load for it, but the last time we took it to the range the it wouldn't even hit the target...so we need to look at those sites next time we take it out.

I've only taken a single deer with a rifle and that was the open sight Win 94. I've taken 2 nice bucks with my Mossberg 5500 and #1 buckshot. I am not exactly the most prolific of deer hunters

rem 700 bdl in 30-06
Winchester pre-64 1894 .30-30

And I just bought a rearsenal mosin nagant to do the job while I'm at school to keep my nice rifles from getting beaten up or stolen.

Marlin 338MX with a big loop installed.

Who says levers aren't accurate? This is a 3 shot group and its high because it's sighted in that high at 100 yards. (top hole is slightly bigger cuz it's actually 2)

Mosin Nagant M91/30 over here. Don't have another bolt action, and my semis are either too light (in caliber) or too heavy (in actual weight).

Don't really do a lot of deer hunting, so the Mosin's good enough for me.

A pre '64 Winchester model 70 in 30'06. It has been killing deer for a long time, I think since the '30s or 40s. I have old pictures of my grandpa posing with it and deer.

Under 150yds only. I know I can hit a deer a lot further with this thing, but frankly I don't want to have to walk further than 150 yards to get to it.

Well, depending on where I'm going that morning, my mood, and the what's closest,

M44 Romanian
M48 Yugo
K31 Swiss.
M4
50 TC Hawken
Romanian SKS

All of them have taken a few deer.:D

At one time I attended “Sight-In- Days” a pre deer season ritual at a sportsman’s club with a membership of 1400. By state law semiautomatic rifles were not allowed for Big Game season.

The variety of rifle types and calibers was fascinating. The lever action seemed to be in decline. One of the more popular rifles was the Remington 760 pump action. Bolt action rifles were starting to dominate numbers wise. I believe the rise of the bolt action was a generational thing as the older hunters tended to use lever and pump action rifles more so than the bolt action rifle.

Optics has radically changed. Fixed power scopes are to a degree semi obsolete with the variable scope dominating especially the high end magnification range.

One thing that disturbs me is so few perspective hunters stand up and shoot after sighting their rifles from the bench. It is hard to judge people’s marksmanship ability but then most deer are taken rather close or from stands that provide some form of a rifle rest.

The only two hunting rifles still in my possession are a Winchester M94 30-30 and a Winchester M70 30-06 with 1.75-6X scope with heavy duplex reticle. Do I stand up and shoot yes at the 50-100 & 200 yard lines.
