What makes a Hi Point Ugly?

The thing I just can't get past is the rounded front on the ejection port. If the port was rectangular, and they squared up the slide, it would bear an uncanny resemblance to a certain highly regarded Austrian pistol whose name I will not mention, so as not to offend anyone.

Handsome is as handsome does, as Sam Gamgee's old gaffer used to say.

The big blocky slide is disproportional, if we say that what we are used to seeing is proportional. The frame does not look particuarly bad or different, in this age of Tupperware guns.

A gun, bottom line, needs to meet some needs. Beauty is not one of them. If you need to use your pretty gun, it will be seized by the cops and beaten up or melted down, just like a Hi Point.

It doesn't look like a gun.

The timing light/cordless drill analogies are pretty accurate.

Just my 2¢

But ok, I admit, I have one & it works fine. (still looks like feces though.)

The fact that you ask the question demonstrates a serious myopia on your part.

If you would seriously ask "what make Rosanne Barr ugly?"...get back to me.

For me the must displeasing to the eye part of the hi-point is the overhang at the back of the slide, I have a hi-point 45 and it handles fine, that said it doesn't come out of the safe much because when i go to the range it is often with my 1911 toting friend and if it is between the two putting it in the hi-point is just a waste, I"m not saying it's a bad gun, but it just feels clunky when i shoot it, to me it is a tool, it isn't something i break out for fun, but it is a good gun if your budget is tight. just me.

I decided to do some photoshoping and "correct" most of what I (and apparently several others) feel is wrong with the Hi Point. The left image is the original and I basically just moved some stuff around and did the listed changes to not cure, but at least help out the Hi Point ugliness :). It would have been a harder change but that Philips grip screw needs to be changed to at least a flat head, or preferably a hex screw as well.

WOW!!!

That doesn't look bad at all. That actually looks pretty good. It looks more like a gun instead of a closeup of a buzzard with a big head.

The Hi-Power is bulky, clunky, metallic, and angular. It isn't graceful or curved. Therefore, it looks like a gun-shapped block of metal. Of course, for some, it's simple functionality makes it beautiful.

I hope somebody is drunk posting... :D

What is funny to me is the odd way Hi Point adds a little gun "bling" to the pistol. It's like adding a spoiler to an Escort, or those "vents" you can get at Walmart.

It has a "skeletonized" trigger for heaven's sake. It has a finger-rest on the magazine even though it's full-sized. Some are two-toned. Some have rails. Some have lasers and others have compensators. Some have something really odd on the floor-plate that looks like a battery pack for a cordless drill. They share a certain "wannabee" spirit with a car driven by a novice fanboy who has added all the cosmetic requirements, except for paint, to turn a Dodge Shadow into a Tokyo Drift. It's still cheap, and it looks silly.

Really? Come on, it's a cheap pistol. Let it at least have the dignity to look utilitarian. I suppose that is ultimately it, for me. Instead of looking no frills, and basic, and doing so with pride, it has some really funky, needless, and CHEAP gun bling. Basic cigarettes are basic. They don't pretend to be anything else. I suppose I would have far more regard for a Hi Point if it proudly stood out for what it was. Instead, it seduces the novice or ignorant into believing it is something more (I recall the whole "Feel the Steel" ad campaign). It's kind of like a guy who buys an Chinese motorcycle, adds a bunch of chrome, gets a pleather (the modern name for Nalgahyde) jacket with iron-on skulls, and rubs on a few fake tattoos.

I would agree that the slide sticking out the back makes it ugly, kinda makes Glock look good.

Ummm, no. That is like saying Rosie O'Donnell makes Rosanne Barr look good - once you get into the class of ugly, you don't get any waivers to get out just because you stand next to another example of ugly. (It's kinda like when I was in school and all the fat girls hung around together. Rather than making the least fat one look slim, it just added confirmation to the fat label for all!)

"When they pry my gun out of my cold, dead fingers - Please Lord, don't let it be a High-Point or a Glock. Leave me some semblance of dignity in my final moments, Amen."

Better to buy a handsome reliable Eastern european Tokarev or Zastava pistol.
They are so much better looking than a Hi Point, NOT.

My Glocks are beautiful.

Okay, maybe that isn't the best word, but they are certainly no hi-point
