What makes a Hi Point Ugly?

I decided to do some photoshoping and "correct" most of what I (and apparently several others) feel is wrong with the Hi Point. The left image is the original and I basically just moved some stuff around and did the listed changes to not cure, but at least help out the Hi Point ugliness :). It would have been a harder change but that Philips grip screw needs to be changed to at least a flat head, or preferably a hex screw as well.

Nicely done. I'd pick up one of those for under $200 in a second.

What makes it ugly, in a word, is proportions. Obviously, this is opinion, but what makes it ugly is that the barrel and slide are out of whack with the grip. Too top-heavy, too short, and positioned at an odd spot relative to the grip. Mgmorden's photoshop job looks much better- lower and longer on the top ( like a nice '67 GTO ).

the slide is disproportionately large and the tail is too long (meaning the slide sits very far behind the grip. Looks like some kind of alien ray gun. If you are into that sort of thing, pull the trigger. My XD isn't the most beautiful thing in the world, but it is a design that appeals to me. I think 1911s are the smokin hot cheerleaders of the gun world, but I have yet to get my hands on one. Still waiting.
I totally agree. I think the tail is too long and it makes the gun look like one of those supermarket sticker tag guns. LOL

But your safety is now a slide lock!

I think Glock handguns and Savage rifles look sexy, but I still cringe when looking at High Points. This may partially be to not having a very good experience with them. A buddy of mine got one and we went shooting. It was brand new out of the box, so maybe this is due to it's "break in period" or something, but be we could not go a whole magazine without having some kind of failure. It either wouldn't feed or wouldn't eject. Incredibly frustrating.

Is this a trick question? Seriously, look at the thing. ;)

I will say that wood grips make it look a little more tolerable. Sort of like an odd commi block gun.

I just hate the overall shape and proportion of the gun. It looks like a dewalt cordless drill.

Nice job mgmorden. It sort of looks more like a makorov. I'd still want to reshape the grip. It's just a little too toy like in shape IMO.

I am going ot get one in 9mm and throw it, and about 10000 rounds of whammo in a bail out bag. After of course a few trips to the range to see how it shoots. I can say everyone I know with one loves it after they shoot it. Just like being able to love an ugly kid who is smart and good at what they do.

they are cheaply made and dangerous the slide has been known to actually fly off and it the shooter when fired thats ugly...

...i apologize to those ive upset with my previos remark but this is not something i read iwas told by reliable source that i trust and believe but if i hurt your feelings sorry

This is what is wrong with this type of thread. Many people have no experience with a gun, but consider themselves knowledgeable on the gun in question simply because someone they know told them "facts" about a gun. :scrutiny: I've owned a Hi-Point for 12 years and the slide never once thought about 'flying off at me'. Hi-Points are not the junk guns that uninformed/mis-informed posters want them to be. Are they a viable carry gun? Not for me. I carry an "ugly" Glock 27. Is a Hi-Point a viable Home Defense gun? Not for me, I use a Rem 870 12 gauge & a Glock 21.

Many gun owners use a HI-Point for defense because they can only afford a $150 gun. For the money it isn't the worse deal out there. The majority of Hi-Points seem to perform quite effectively. I use my C-9 (gift from my brother 12 years ago) for plinking or to throw in a toolbox. My experience (and the information I've seen from the various sites including the Hi-Point site) tells me that Hi-Points do not self destruct as this poster thinks they do. They do on occasion have failures, but then again, guns that cost a lot more have failures also. For this poster to say that Hi-Points are dangerous, well he is right. BUT the danger zone is in front of the barrel, not behind it.

...Oh & mgmorden's redesign really improves the look of the gun. I have no idea if the gun can function with that design, I jsut know that it sure looks better like that!!!!

Sorry this is a bit off topic, but how much would 10K rounds of 9mm weigh? It would cost about $2,000 if you were to buy the cheap Tula Ammo.

So here's the question, if you would drop $2k + on ammo, why not spend a bit more on the gun? I'm a Hi Point owner, but this just seems crazy.

10K 115 gr bullets = 164.29 lb
10K Cases = ~90 lb
10K x 5gr powder = 7.14 lb

Add a bit for primers and you're at ~265 lb.

As for cost, buying that much commercial ammo would be insane. Reloading cost with hard cast lead would be around $940 plus whatever you have to pay for brass if you don't have enough.

This is the one concept that most new gun owners don't seem to grasp. The gun is only a small part of the overall cost of shooting a gun. I fell into that catagory when I first started buying guns. I bought a cheap Sigma 40ve. I spent $350 on the gun. If I add up the ammo cost that this gun has eaten over the years (approx 50 boxes @ $35/box of 100 rounds) I know that I've invested over $1700 in the ammo alone. If I had taken the $2000 total investment and purchased a $1000 gun and then spent $1000 on ammo I would have been far better off right now. I'd rather practice 1/2 as much with a higher quality gun, than practice twice as much with a cheap $150 gun. In the long run I think I'd be shooting tighter groups with the costlier gun even with less practice.

It's like everything else in life. Once you learn what to do it's too late to benefit yourself, since you learned by your mistakes. BUT your children won't listen to you because they think they know better. By the time they learn that you were right. it is too late for them because they had to learn by their mistakes also. The kicker is that your grandchildren won't listen to you or their parents because they think you are just an old man who is out of touch with reality & who listens to their parents, so they are doomed to repeat what you and your children did...learn by their mistakes. The world keeps spinning.

The Hi-Point isn't beautiful to me, but you'd be surprised what some folks think is attractive... Other guns, some highly regarded, have a similar appearance.

How many have complained about the XDm?

It looks a bit more severe, I'm thinking small pox. I didn't know they were not only ugly, but prone to skin disease.

Now that some pictures of HPs have been posted, I have to ask the OP...why wouldn't you thing they are ugly?

Dave

I've got a hi-point c380 and its just as ugly. If ur drunk it kinda looks like the gun from bladerunner?! but it shoots great... well, its accurate anyway. and it doesn't jam. and it was like 100 bucks used. and i still hate it. 'cause it's fugly.
