What new rifle do I want?

I bought a Ruger American Ranch in 5.56...had to send it in before I even got to shoot it. The bolt was digging huge gouges in the brass of the round under the one that was being chambered. Ruger changed the bolt and said it shot fine even though the bolt didn't operate very smoothly. I sold it without shooting it because of the initial disappointment.
I bought a CZ 527 Carbine since all of CZ's .223s are safe to shoot 5.56. The bolt operates even less smoothly than the Ruger's did almost to the point of having to force it to feed the first round. I was told it was somewhat common with CZ's magazines with this rifle. Bummer. Plus, I can't use the iron sights very effectively...5" group at 50 yards (old eyes). I wish I would have just kept the leas expensive Ruger.
I'm not a rifle guy either, but have really been enjoying shooting my 10/22. It's a challenge and I would really like to try and see what I can do with .22lr since it is still so much cheaper to shoot than anything else and just as much fun.

@Spats McGee have you gotten any closer to a decision?

Absurd thought of the day, what with the list of suggestions growing longer

As a collector of cheap rifles (because family of 8 who all shoot), my quiet recommendation is buy the most refined rifle that fits you. I’m truly looking forward to that bittersweet day when all 6 kids have absconded with everything they can remove from my safes so that I can trade the rest for what I want.

Nope. This purchase is still a ways off, but I'm a bona fide member of Overthinkers Anonymous, so I always start my research early. On the upside, I'm almost a complete stranger to Buyer's Remorse.

ETA: As I've refined this idea, I've decided that I want to more-or-less build this rifle. I could save my pennies and then go buy something above my capabilities, but I don't think I want to. I think I'd rather hunt down a beater, then go about the business of spiffing it up.

If you're not going to go full-blown custom on your parts then I suggest starting with the Savage model 10. Plenty of tinkery stuff available for those guy, They are cheap to get into, and generally everybody has the tools to do the work on them at home..... Minus a barrel nut wrench, and possibly a way to hold the action or barrel..... If installing a custom barrel is part of the plans, anyway. If not dont need those
