All other factors being equal, what pistol calibers have a reputation for being good for accuracy purposes? I've heard/read .32 semi-wadcutters, .38 Super. .30 Luger are considered "inherently accurate" and good when accuracy is the primary concern. If you were building a pistol for accuracy, period, what cartridge would you build it around and why? (other than the .22).

[assume that all of the answers which begin . . . "depends on the shooter, depends on the quality of the barrel, depends on the barrel/slide lockup, depends on . . . ad nauseum" have already been posted so we can skip them. Assume all those things are taken to be equal. The only thing that varies is the cartridge.]

As I recall, the traditional choices for the most accurate handgun ammo are:

.22 LR (Target grade)
.32 S&W Long (Target Load)
.38 Special wadcutter
9mm Parabellum
.45 ACP

I'm not into the ultra-accurate target shooting, but IIRC, Olympic competition is in .22LR and the "large bore" events are almost always won with the .32 S&W Long target load.

Just curious, what makes those calibers "inherently accurate" anyways? I fail to see a reason why one would be more accurate than the other, with all the other factors being equal.
